W's fault? Maybe...listened to the wrong folks at the pentagon, most likely.

Not the Pentagon, but perhaps Colin Powell, and whatshisname from the CIA that recently received the < choke > Medal of Freedom.

President Bush doesn't have to worry about reelection now. Let's start killing some enemies in large numbers.

In the end the legacy will take care of itself...just like it did for Ronald Reagan.

Many people who commit suicide secretly believe they are hurting someone else. Newt just did that. He proved he was not a team player but just another MSM darling wannabe.

Further, as usual it is all about how allegedly smart he is and his many novel ideas. He is a typical college professor looking to influence the student body with sermons from the shining city on the hill. He won't be accepted by the majority of Republicans and virtually none of the conservatives.

Newt has done more for conservatives than W has or ever will. If the war in Iraq continues down the road it is on, everyone in power associated with its conduct is toast.

It wasn't because HE wanted to. He was coerced out due his own ethical problem.

Rod Dreher, formerly of National Review posted the following last spring on another site (in connection with another topic):

In 1994, I was living on Capitol Hill in a group house with four others, all of whom worked in politics. When the Republicans took over the House that year, I taunted one of my housemates, who worked for a Democratic member, with chants of, “Speaker Gingrich! Speaker Gingrich!” He wasn’t fazed a bit. He told me calmly, “We know that Newt cheats on his wife. If he pushes things too far, we’ll make sure the media know it too.”

As it turned out, Newt really was cheating on his wife. I wonder how many punches were pulled by Speaker Gingrich out of fear that the Democrats would drop the bomb on him.

I was reminded of it by Newt's many recent appearances for his book.

Just an insight into how politics works.

Metalcor, the war is almost over. 80% of the country is pacified and 20% of the country remains uncertain. No one will return the Sunnis to power. Gingrich does not have a political career unless he is elected to another political office. His cheap shots will not garner him any kind of support in the Republican rank and file. Only those opposed to the Iraq war will be encouraged.

I would love to know how you have arrived at your percentages. I speak to people wh are there almost daily, and they see no end in site if we continue down the road we are on. Mosul is on the verge of collapse when it was relatively pacified a year ago. Attacks increase in occurence and strength. Troops are pulling double duty in Marez with females doing missions the will never do, according the the President just yesterday. If it is 80% over, then we must be getting ready to just bug out.

You are a victim of your own wishful thinking. In the meantime, it comes as no surprise that Gingrich wants to cut and run. He has shown cowardice before. First, he showed it when he precipitated a confrontation with President Clinton and the government shut down. Gingrich then backed down. Ask him shy. The answer must be either he misjudged Clinton or succumbed to cowardice.

Then the coup de grace for Gingrich was he supported and implemented the indictment of Clinton in the House of Representatives. Then, some fellow from Hustler Magazine paid a million to get eye witness testimony Gingrich was boinking his secretary. Once again, Gingrich took the cowards way out--he resigned from being Speaker of the House and from the House. Not a real testimony to his courage or judgment IMHO.

The antiwar people, the MSM and the paleo-conservatives (Buchananites et al) all are hoping for a bad outcome in Iraq. They have seized on scraps of information, anecdotes and the natural nature of war which is that it is unpredictable and fraught with unanticipated problems.

Count on three things. The President will prevail in this war. We will prevail in this war. And, the antiwar crowd will gradually become as vocal as those who once opposed the war in Afghanistan.

TROOPS DETAIN 6 SUSPECTED IN BAGHDAD GOVERNOR SLAYING

January 12, 2005

Release Number: 05-01-52

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

TROOPS DETAIN 6 SUSPECTED IN BAGHDAD GOVERNOR SLAYING

BAGHDAD, Iraq -- An early morning raid on Jan. 11 netted Task Force Baghdad Soldiers six possible insurgents suspected of involvement in the assassination of the governor of Baghdad province.

A military spokesman said the raid culminated from tips from local sources.

"The information was pretty good," said Maj. Web Wright, public affairs officer for the 10th Mountain Division's 2nd Brigade Combat Team. "We were able to act on this intelligence and detain these guys without firing a shot."

Members of Company B, 1st Battalion, 509th Infantry Regiment of the 10th Mountain Division's 2nd Brigade Combat Team, detained four suspects during the initial raid in the Hurriyah district of western Baghdad.

Forty minutes later, the unit reported the house cleared, and two other suspects were found and detained.

Wright said tips from local residents are becoming more commonplace in Baghdad.

"The citizens of Baghdad are really starting to turn over good information that we can put to use," Wright said. "They are obviously fed up with the violence that the terrorists are causing."

The suspects remain in custody for questioning.

From here in the heart of Newt's old district, and from the keyboard of a former Newt volunteer, all I can manage about the possibility of Newt running again, even for dogcatcher, is the sound of a loud loogie being hacked up all over my monitor. The thought of it is positively disgusting! And silly...to the max!

Ever the brilliant but egotistical Newt, is selling a book. (To that end, he'd even give a book selling interview to Connie Chung!). He's a first class jerk, he'll never run for office again, he doesn't even have a homestate from which to run for God's sake, except maybe Pennsylvania, and how do you think that would go?

Newt is sooooo over! "After a brusing election", Newt "just wants to spend this next year talking big ideas" according to an ABC radio interview. (Look out...I'm hacking up another one!)

The only way Newt can get booked on TODAY is to morph himself into another "renegade republican", like McCain. The left eats it up, Newt sells some books, and the fools out there get their panties in a wad over Newt rising again.

My wishful thinking? I have a daughter who, after 8 months of half-assed training, found herself being sent as a replacement to FOB Marez on Christmas Eve, three days after the mass casualty. As a combat medic, she does regular shifts in the treatment center, and then a shift as perimeter guard because they are shorthanded. Gets 3 hours of sleep on a good night, interrupted by explosions. Mortar took out an Iraqi interpreter within 20 yards of where she was standing last week. Next week she goes to an outpost with an infantry unit to prepare for elections. And the President says yesterday that no females will ever be put into combat. More than a few females are listed as KIA last time I looked and my daughter got a combat badge 1 week in. Stop believing everything coming out of the Pentagon and the Whitehouse. This is becoming a growing disaster due to poor management and the refusal to admit it. And it is the last thing I would wish for.

Your daughter is a hero. Incidentally, my DEROS from Viet Nam was 17 May 1969. I hope and pray for your daughter to return home.

Your statement about Mosul is flawed. This was previously a Shiite city; however, Saddam corrected for that by killing of Shiites and moving in Sunnis. Thus far the Sunnis have not retaliated, but they are sure to settle scores when they have a legally determined government. IMHO those who hope for peace and security by running away will get neither. As I have opined before, this war is coming to a close.

I hope and pray you are correct, and thank you for your service. However, I have been paying particular attention to mosul for some time and everything I have read and been told by those on the ground (some on their second tours there) indicates a rapidly deteriorating situation. A diverse but slight majority kurdish population which was largely greatful and hopeful for our presence is now openly hostile. As the population drives by the ridiculously exposed base they no longer wave and smile, they glare and give obscene gestures. And mortar attacks are just expected as part of the daily routine. Again, I hope you are right, but some of the people there are beginning to think it has all been for nothing and just want to get out of there. My daughter is not yet among them and hope she doesn't come to that conclusion. Me, I'm wavering today. Not because I think peace and security will follow our leaving, but I don't think peace and securtiy will come from our staying. Not the way we are headed.

Here's a link to a 1999 Newsmax article and accompanying FR thread on Newt's probably being blackmailed by the Clintons and its impact on his actions as House Speaker:

He's not a man we want to have anything more to do with.

The people of America will NEVER elect a first lady named Callista.

Heck, by 2008, Newt probably will have traded her in for Wife 4.0

I have no evidence that Newt is wrong nor do I have any evidence that GW/Rummy are right.

My comment was directed to the point that you do not say something to the media that our troops in harms way are not doing their job!

I wonder, what were Gingrich's usual remarks about Iraq before he came on the Today Show?

As an aside, I'm sure it doesn't surprise you to know there are conservatives/Republicans opposed to our actions in Iraq.

I have no problem with Newt or any conservative questioning our strategy in Iraq, but I have a sneaky feeling he did it for the express purpose of making himself more acceptable to, and getting more face time on, the MSM with a view to a 2008 run for the presidency.
