But only a handful of institutions have shown full-blown outbreaks of MRSA over the past three years, according to state records.

What are the statistics for MRSA infections among long-term dialysis patients?

The main reason for creating the resistent microbes is the free market/profit oriented practices. Freemarketeers feed the cattle with the antibiotics an a mass scale.

I see you've seen the light also. People need to boost their immunities and stay away from doctors who over prescribe antibiotics.

What is Staphylococcus aureus?

Staphylococcus aureus, often referred to simply as "staph," are bacteria commonly carried on the skin or in the nose of healthy people. Occasionally, staph can cause an infection; staph bacteria are one of the most common causes of skin infections in the United States. Most of these infections are minor (such as pimples and boils) and most can be treated without antibiotics (also known as antimicrobials or antibacterials). However, staph bacteria can also cause serious infections (such as surgical wound infections and pneumonia). In the past, most serious staph bacteria infections were treated with a certain type of antibiotic related to penicillin. Over the past 50 years, treatment of these infections has become more difficult because staph bacteria have become resistant to various antibiotics, including the commonly used penicillin-related antibiotics (1). These resistant bacteria are called methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, or MRSA.

Where are staph and MRSA found?

Staph bacteria and MRSA can be found on the skin and in the nose of some people without causing illness. MRSA - Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus aureus Fact Sheet.

Staph is everywhere already. The strains that are resistant to anti-biotics have developed by the over-use of anti-biotics. Mostly by Americans with colds who demand penicillin and tetracyclene to treat a virus.

This is the one you should be afraid of:

Compare it with the HUGE use of antibiotics by the freemarketeers in the cattle industry. Which one is larger?

I don't dispute that either. There is a an overuse of anti-biotics all around.

Also VRE (Vancomycin resistant Enterococcus). The reason why Hospitals and Nursing Homes/Convalescent Centers ae full of MRSA and VRE is because the overuse of potent antibiotics, most of the time, unnecessarily, by doctors. Many patients come to my office with a run of the mill cold...and they demand antibiotics. If a doctor refuses to give antibiotics because of a viral infection, these patients just go to another doctor until they get their antibiotics, thus, resistance is promoted. If I do not think that you need antibiotics, then you do not get them. If you decide to look for another MD, then be my guest, this is America...I refuse to be held captive by demanding and unreasonable patients (and by the way, most of them are liberals, arrogant crybabies). Being a doctor is worthless now, you get treated like you are a Dunkin Donuts store...patients, insurance companies, etc...and the malpractice insurance keeps on going up and up... a ruined career...in 10 years I expect the collapse of the health care system and the advent of socialized medicine unless something gets done now.

My point is that the freemarketeering (profit at any social/human cost) HUGE use of antibiotics in "regular" cattle feed might be 99% of the problem!

But we would rather prevent people from using the medication than reduce the profit of a reform minded oligarchs by a penny. (Same reason why prices of medications are artificially kept high).

You are right. VRE's are bad too. I forgot to add that one.

My wife is a nurse. The health care system is failing fast from overuse and demands for unneeded services. It is a major problem arising from the welfare state. It's tentacles have seeped into almost every aspect of our society. Very few people think that they should earn what they get. Most people are looking to see who's going to take care of them.

I totally agree. Very scary stuff that sometime down the line will create disaster.

You're partly right. Going to the hospital should not be the first resort. I think that another problem is that much of the staff is overworked and, as a result, always in a hurry. A side effect being they sometimes forget to sanitize insturments or even wash their hands.
