College cancels Churchill's talk (Professor Who Compared 9/11 Victims to Eichmann)
Rocky Mountain News ^ | February 1, 2005

Posted on 02/01/2005 12:47:14 PM PST by nickcarraway

The New York state college whose invitation to CU professor Ward Churchill touched off a firestorm of controversy cancelled his talk this morning over security concerns.

Hamilton College told the professor it is concerned that Clinton, N.Y., police might not be able to provide adequate security for the ethnic studies professor at the panel discussion scheduled Thursday because of the number of death threats made against him in response to his essay that argued the 9/11 attacks were justified and compared victims to Adolf Eichmann, the chief operative in Hitler's extermination of the Jews during World War II.

"Considerable threats of violence have been directed at the college and members of the panel," said Hamilton president Joan Hinde Stewart. "I have made the decision to cancel the event in the interest of protecting those at risk."

Churchill has triggered angry reactions in many quarters with his argument that American foreign policy, including support for U.N. sanctions of Iraq following the first Gulf War, had done much to provoke the terrorists' actions in an essay written the day of the attacks.

Churchill's essay referred to victims of the World Trade Center attacks as "little Eichmanns inhabiting the sterile sanctuary of the twin towers."

In a statement released Monday, Churchill protested what he called "grossly inaccurate media coverage," which had "resulted in defamation of my character and threats against my life. What I actually said has been lost, indeed turned into the opposite of itself," Churchill wrote in a statement accompanying his announcement to step down as chair of the ethnic studies department at the University of Colorado.

The essay, On the Justice of Roosting Chickens, was intended to make the point "that we cannot allow the U.S. government, acting in our name, to engage in massive violations of international law and fundamental human rights and not expect to reap the consequences."

Denying that he is a "defender" of the September 11 attacks, Churchill said, he had simply been "pointing out that if U.S. foreign policy results in massive death and destruction abroad, we cannot feign innocence when some of that destruction is returned.

"I have never said that people 'should' engage in armed attacks on the United States, but that such attacks are a natural and unavoidable consequence of unlawful U.S. policy. As Martin Luther King, quoting Robert F. Kennedy, said, 'Those who make peaceful change impossible make violent change inevitable.'"

Churchill's essay referred to victims of the World Trade Center attacks as "little Eichmanns inhabiting the sterile sanctuary of the twin towers."

I'm just guessing, but considering all the police officers in NY who lost friends or family on 911, more than a few might avert their eyes if someone, say, accidently beat the bejesus out of Churchill

While I'm happy about this recent event, Hamilton still has some serious left-wing problems. This is the same college that hired Susan Rosenburg...the revoltuionary from the Weather Underground. This constant back-tracking can't make up for what seems to be an inherent problem at this institution. It's sickening to see just who is teaching our kids today.

Ward Asshill is a weasel as well as a commie. Read his loathsome essay which fairly drips with hatred and venom and judge for yourself if he isn't expressing satisfaction in the deaths of thousands of US citizens and salivates at the though of bigger and better 9-11s. There is critical discourse and there is treason. Asshill represents the latter. He should be fired from his position as he is paid by the tax payers of Colorado.

While ANY death threat is way, way out of line . . . I suspect us FReepers had a lot to do with this cancellation, just as I KNOW none of us were responsible for the death threats.

This should serve as a lesson to those liberal morons who think they can scream FIRE! in an auditorium with impunity. Those days . . . are no more. We're on call now . . . and we have avenues to get OUR views out now.

I doubt if he can be fired by the University of Colorado. I'd bet he has tenure (e.g. job for life).

I do wish I lived near the guy--I'd picket him morning, noon & night with REALLY big signs.

If the alums threaten the Regents with a reduction in giving, they'll offload this guy. Tenure or no tenure, he's gone.

He's just a blowhard that will sell his soul for attention.

HEYYYYYYYYYY!

Looks like we WON this round. I sent out an e mail with info and links to Protest Warrior chapter leaders in NY/NJ, and I know there have been several Freeper ping lists conducting a telephone and e mail campaign on this guy.

He resigned as department chair at CU, now his speaking date at Hamilton College has been cancelled; next objective is getting CU to sh*tcan him outright!

We don't need guys like this around our young skulls full of mush for ANY reason - not even as 'dinosaur exhibits' in the "Liberal Museum of Unnatural Revised History"!

I saw the College Republicans at CU protesting this turd--and CNN Headline News just said he was tenured.

They may have to pay him for a while, but I'd put this guy in an office all by his lonesome for a few years, having no teaching schedule or access to students. He'll probably sue, but let him. He's a vile creature.

Does anyone know who the moron was that invited this goof to begin with? Whoever they are, they should be fired. Secondly, I'm wondering if they go ahead and pay him anyway.

Look you stupid idiot: When you say we are to blame for the attack, you may not be saying you support the terrorists. But, you can't talk about us as if we are guilty and actually expect people to support you. There is only a minor distinction, not a major difference between you supporting the terrorists and just saying we are partially to blame. After all, by saying we are partially to blame due to our policies, you are expressing sympathy for the terrorists and partially validating their actions.

I e-mailed him this.....I was much more tactful in my e-mail:

"Sir,

I am appalled by what you have said regarding 9/11.

I also read your statement on your site. I believe that every story has two sides.

However, when I read your response, it was less than convincing. Your word choice was very poor in your piece. And frankly, based on your previous writings, on marxism and the like, I wonder just how much sympathy you actually do give to the terrorists, contrary to your protestations.

There is no major difference, only a difference in slight distinction, between actually supporting the terrorists and giving their actions legitimacy by attacking the victims of their attacks and saying the policy of the United States brought the attacks on itself.

You do not seem to understand this. I have called your college and demanded you be fired immediately."

No doubt threats were made, but I think it likely that the lefty nut-burgers withdrew the invitation because they came to understand the folly of letting this "man" speak, and they had to dis-invite the guy. . . so. . . .they certainly can't look like the fools they are, no way, so they allege the security concerns were insurmountable because of hateful people (conservatives, of course) and the invitation was withdrawn. . .a "Not me, not me!" moment.

Cancel the talk, blame others and avoid looking like fools.
