Marquette Administration Suppresses CR ''Support Our Troops'' Table
Marquette University College Republicans ^ | 1/31/05 | Brandon Henak, Daniel Suhr

January 31, 2005 For Immediate Release Contact: Brandon Henak, Chair, 414-243-9558

Once again the Marquette University Administration has taken its ultra-liberal inclinations to the extreme, violating its own commitment to academic freedom and ideological diversity. Yesterday afternoon, a University official abruptly suspended an approved “Support our Troops” table the College Republicans at Marquette University (CRs) set up to benefit Adopt a Sniper, a 501c(3) organization helping our troops in the Middle East. Today, the University Administration issued a memo canceling the table for the rest of the week.

Students were volunteering at an Office of Student Development (OSD)-approved “Support Our Troops” table in the Alumni Memorial Union this afternoon, selling Adopt a Sniper trinkets modeled after the Lance Armstrong “Livestrong” bands. During a transition between volunteers, OSD staff canceled the table, confiscating the signs and supplies.

Today, OSD Dean Mark McCarthy issued a memorandum stating “this fundraising activity does not comport to the University’s mission.” He said the Adopt a Sniper program was “clearly provocative” and ran contrary to Catholic values.

CRs chairman Brandon Henak decried the Administration’s suppression tactics. “Our group saw this table as an opportunity for our fellow students to support our troops by making peace possible through victory,” Henak said. “This program directly benefits the men on the front lines, who use this material to eliminate terrorists and protect the lives of other American troops and innocent Iraqi civilians.”

“It is an absolute shame that this Administration is so blinded by its liberal bent that they refuse to recognize that the success of our servicemen and women in Iraq and Afghanistan is crucial to building a safe, free, and ultimately more peaceful world,” Henak said. He pointed out that the Catholic Church has long upheld the tenets of Just War Theory as a legitimate way for governments to achieve long-term peace through military action.

Henak also noted the proud American foreign policy tradition of “Peace through Strength,” stretching from Teddy Roosevelt to John F. Kennedy and Ronald Reagan.

He concluded by saying, “If Marquette is serious about its Catholic values, perhaps they can start by ending the scandal of granting University honors to pro-abortion, pro-gay marriage politicians and dissident theologians who directly perpetuate heresies to our student body.”

Adopt a Sniper, the group chosen by CRs as the beneficiary of their efforts, has garnered press coverage from Fox News, Reuters, The New York Times, and Stars and Stripes for its innovative program. Donations taken at the CR table are sent to the foundation, which is run by US-based law enforcement and retired military. These officers buy highly-specialized sniper equipment, including unique body armor, flashlights, and tactical gear that military procurement does not always provide. Thunder

I'm a 1992 graduate, fortunately there are still some great conservatives and libertarians at MU. Let's not forget the pilot that flew Bush onto the carrior was a Marquette graduate as well.

Unfortunately, Mark McCarthy has displayed these colors for years ever since I was a student there. Same old same old. I think the term "Adopt a Sniper" probably hit him wrong and in typical fashion, he probably did zero investigation on what the program is all about.

The only way to rectify this is to change the nickname back to the Marquette Warriors.

:)

Go Warriors

I fully understand the need, use and supporting of Snipers in the military.
I have put the uniform on as has many others in my family.
But doing this at a University. Give it to them in small doses to start with. Begin with “
support the troops and work your way up;-)
Doing this at a U is asking for this. You don’t need to be confrontational all the time.
They had a table there already. There are many other places to set up a Adopt a Sniper
booth.

I mean Brad have you hung up those family deer hunting photos up on your wall yet? ;-)

Oooooh-to the-Rah!

Snipers rule, terroristas drool (foamy blood, usually), and our guys are the best!

If I was not already to old to join up, I would go in with becoming a sniper as my uppermost goal. I've got skills that it is a shame to waste - I mean, I can drop a trotting coyote with a head shot from 220 yards, open sights with a .300 mag (hand hot-loaded Nosler partitions, 165gr)- a nice "little" Parker-Hale. All it takes is 20/13 vision and steady hands... </end boastful rant>

Really now ~ why did you have to leave the names of real men in there with that Kerry face?

These are our own dead whose sacred sacrifice must not be subjected to or associated with ridicule of any kind.

Ah yes, Marquette University. home of the flapping turkeys, the multiple voting democrats and rampant leftist administration.

I got a fundraising call from them the other day. Told them it wasn't a good time. The very nice young lady asked if she could call back at a better time. I said, "Sure, right after they change the nickname back to the 'Warriors'". She said OK. Wasn't surprised at all. I guess they hear a lot of that.

Keep up the good work for us Alums who are too heartbroken and disgusted to venture back there.

I agree that they should be able to support the troops, and snipers for that matter, but the ruling by the university had more to do with what the actuall bands they were sealing had written on them, and not the fact that they were suportting the snipers, which is cleverly left out of the article above. Sneaky Sneaky, but cant get by me.

the bands said: 1 shot 1 kill NO REMORSE I decide

if you will notive the capatilized portion this is what the university had a problem with, the whole idea of no remorse though the college should have simply told them they cant use the saying rather than stopping the whole table, but then again with all the dam school shootings, and such can you really blame them for worrying about someone misviewing an adopt a sniper program.

just so you know I sent a donation to the adopt a sniper program after I read about this because I like the idea, just may not be a good thing in this situation.

Don't you think "Adopt a Sniper" Is a little over the top. What's wrong with just Adopt a service member.

I agree with quietolong although I would change it to "Equip a U.S. Military Sniper". ( Serious, as is their mission. Accurate. No cute word games. No secondary gain of getting the goat of the University Administration.)

As a member of the M.U. College Republicans, you have to honestly ask yourself how much of this p*ssing contest has to do with actually supporting our U.S. military snipers and how much this has to do with yanking the chain of the University Administration.

In this particular case, "Adopt a Sniper" is much too generic, inflammatory and flippant.

What is a "sniper"?

It could be:

Remember the DC Sniper?

or

Farm Worker Killed by Terrorist Sniper Fire in Gaza

or

Sniper May Be Shooting At Vehicles On I - 44 ( Missouri )

Leaving the word "sniper" hanging out there without a qualifier is not appropriate.

The bottom line is that the organization that started the program has decided that the original name "Adopt a Sniper" was "unprofessional" and has changed its name to "AmericanSnipers.org".

Q: Why did Adopt a Sniper (adoptasniper.org) change names to American Snipers (americansnipers.org)? A: There are several reasons: 1. ADOPTASNIPER was named when we were only just a few cops "adopting" a few deployed friends to help them out. 2. Many people think it is all one big joke due to the name and look no further. Worse still ... some of their comments such as "How much do I feed my sniper or when do I walk my sniper?" is simply unprofessional.............WWW.AMERICANSNIPERS.ORG is just plain more professional when speaking with the CEO of a company or the president of the NRA or NSSF.
