Lawmakers denounce Churchill

State lawmakers on Wednesday denounced comments by a University of Colorado professor who compared victims of the World Trade Center terrorist attacks to Nazis, saying his remarks were "evil and inflammatory."

The House unanimously approved a resolution saying remarks by professor Ward Churchill in a three-year-old essay had struck "an evil and inflammatory blow against America's healing process."

The resolution, introduced by Rep. Ted Harvey, R-Highlands Ranch, also proclaimed support for victims of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

"I want to make sure this body stands firm in support of the victims of 9-11," Harvey said.

Churchill's essay and follow-up book, "On the Justice of Roosting Chickens: Reflections on the Consequences of U.S. Imperial Arrogance and Criminality," attracted little attention until his planned appearance Thursday at Hamilton College in New York state triggered protests.

The college canceled the appearance this week, citing death threats against Churchill and school officials. Churchill resigned Monday as chairman of CU's Ethnic Studies Department but retained his job as a professor.

He did not immediately return a telephone message seeking comment Wednesday.

In a statement released Tuesday, Churchill said was not defending the Sept. 11 attacks, "but simply pointing out that if U.S. foreign policy results in massive death and destruction abroad, we cannot feign innocence when some of that destruction is returned."

Some lawmakers on Wednesday called for the Legislature to cut funding for the Ethnic Studies Department, saying Churchill has a right to free speech but taxpayers do not have to subsidize his views.

"Maybe if his funding goes away, he will as well," said Rep. Bill Cadman, R-Colorado Springs.

The university's Board of Regents plans to meet Thursday to discuss Churchill's status.

The Colorado chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union is not involved in the case because no official action has been taken against Churchill, legal director Mark Silverstein said.

"Certainly the First Amendment protects his ability to write freely and speak freely, especially when the writing in question occurred outside his classroom duty," Silverstein said.

And they can take Women's Studies, "Gender" Studies, LBGTQ Studies, and Peace Studies with them! They're the downfall of American universities.

The First Amendment does not guarantee any entitlement to a salary for continuing to say or write what he believes. You can say what you please, but if you piss off your employer, you may become unemployed.

The scariest thing about Churchill IMO is not his opinions about 9/11, but how he calls those that agree with him "people imbued with consciousness" as if there is absolutely no other point of view; as if those who are patriotic, believe in the power of the individual etc don't have any form of consciousness. He's basically saying that everyone but he and a few other radicals are brainwashed sheep. That no POV is valid and workable but his own.

Real intellectual tolerance for diversity there, huh?

Towards the end of this article, he states "What gives me hope is that people are imbued innately with consciousness and you can potentially reorder that to arrive at an understanding of what needs to be done. Once the understanding is there, the capacity to do what necessary is obviously present." Meaning, he hopes to be able to 'reorder' people's thinking in order to get them to overthrow the US government. He's a first-class left-wing agitator of the worst sort. He's frightening.

Do you recall that some ten years ago, a study was done of University of CO faculty, and it was found that some 98 percent were "registered Democrats"? And the Democrats won a Senate seat AND a House seat in CO on Nov. 2, 2004.

There is special circle of Hell for the likes of Churchill and his ilk:
Which will it be?
Circle 9B where he'll be lampooned for eternity by the acerbic heroes of a lower Manhattan Ladder Company as he turns crispy on the spit?
Circle 9.9 where he wanders in a vast wasteland of xeroxed snapshots, endlessly looking at each face, only to find that each lost soul is actually him?
Circle 99 where, as in Dante's vision, traitors go to the depths of the Abyss, it will be a..."round of rain, eternal, cursed, cold, and falling heavy, changing beat, unchanging quality"...only in Churchill's case it should be raining people and he can have a long chat with Herr Eichmann.

Churchill's book: On the Justice of Roosting Chickens: Reflections on the Consequences of U.S. Imperial Arrogance and Criminality

Seems the longer the title, the less worth reading things are these days.

Bill O'Reilly had on the widow and son of a WTC 9/11 victim--the guy is a student at Hamilton where Churchill was scheduled to speak and that started an email campaign to the University. Media attention got focused and Churchill stepped down as Chair of the department and then Hamilton cancelled his appearance citing security concerns.

Professor's 911 Comments

Colorado's governor has told the University of Colorado president that a controversial professor who compared terrorist attack victims to Nazis should be fired.

Governor Owens says he's spoken with CU President Betsy Hoffman, telling her he believes the school has grounds to terminate Ward Churchill's employment.
