Yesterday the league scheduled a news conference to announce the most complex halftime show ever attempted ,then, in a moment so genuine it barely belonged to this week or any other in the Super Bowl's manic history, someone introduced Paul McCartney.
Bounding on stage in a faded red sweatshirt and jeans, Sir Paul offered a respectful salute and took questions. A thousand crabby, jaded journalists looked transported.
"Questions for Paul?"
What? Questions for Paul McCartney?
"Paul, what band will you be performing with?"
"My band."
"No, what band?"
"I have a band; it's called 'my band.' "
McCartney allowed a certain conceit that he's probably here as the anti-Janet, promised to keep the show mammary free, and acknowledged, "I don't have a wardrobe to malfunction, so no worries on that score."
A young woman asked, since he was wearing red and blue, was he a Patriots fan.
"This is just slung on, honey."
With the same breezy manner that was just as infectious yesterday as it was in 1964, McCartney figured that even though we're here hyping this thing eight days a week, he might be here to put a global audience totaling close to 1 billion back in touch with something grandly simple.
"The message of my music is generally peace, love and come together," he said, "and that's as good a message as I can deliver. It's the same old one, but I can't think of anything better."
This is probably just me, but shouldn't there be a Paul McCartney news conference before every game? Not just every Super Bowl, every single game. That'd make next year's Pitt-Youngstown State fray a little more palatable, wouldn't it?

Why can't they just give us Toby Keith, George Strait, and Dolly Parton for the Superbowl and dispense with all the Pop crap?! That's real Americana.

Good question. Who's producing the halftime show, McCartney's record label?
One thing that annoys me about the Super Bowl are all the non-football reporters that show up. These are the people who ask the players on media day what their favorie movie is.
How about having Kristy Jackson sing her 9/11 inspired song, Little Did She Know (She Kissed a Hero).
He found some socks
She chose his tie
And when he left for work that morning he was just another guy
Going to work He'd have to fly
Out to a meeting in L.A. so she had kissed him twice goodbye
Little did she know shed kissed a hero
Though hed always been one in her eyes
But when faced with certain death
Hed said a prayer and took a breath
And led an army of true angels in the sky
Little did she know shed kissed a hero
Though hed always been an angel in her eyes
Putting others first, its true
Thats what heroes always do
Now he doesnt need a pair of wings to fly
The phone had rung
His voice was calm
Before he could tell her anything she knew something was wrong
I love you so
The last words hed said
She said I love you too
And then the phone went dead
Little did she know shed kissed a hero
Though hed always been one in her eyes
But when faced with certain death
Hed said a prayer and took a breath
And led an army of true angels in the sky
Little did she know shed kissed a hero
Though hed always been an angel in her eyes
Putting others first, its true
Thats what heroes always do
Now he doesnt need a pair of wings to fly

After hearing this song, I dont think many fans could see the second half through their tears. A very beautiful, heart-wrenching song.
Maybe Dick Dale or Chantays or Tornadoes or Safaris or Belairs or....sorry...showing my bias here....
I can barely see thru my tears right now.
Personnaly I'm (beyond the sea) ready to see Kevin Spacey come on a do a little Bobby Darin.
;-)
Throw in a little Shanai and I'm 'wicha'.
Do you know the song? Heard it lately? That song tears me apart.
Whoa! What a great idea - the legends of surf music for halftime. It doesn't get much more American than that.
What football fan even watches the halftime show? I use that time to get more food and drinks and take care of other business. I think the halftime show is more for the non-football fans and women - gives them a reason to tune in.
Until I read it here on FR, I had never seen or heard the song.
I didn't even know about Janet Jackson until after the game.
Well, since he's not Irish or Scots, or West Virginian, there's one thing we probably CAN rule out...
too beautiful!!!
No apologies necessary! Any ONE of the five you mentioned are better than ALL the 'performers' quoted in this thread.
Real sad.
I'd pay real money for that one..but, anyway, back to football.
Any good prognosticating threads going on? It's Friday already!!
My favorite, Phil Keaggy, sounds a lot like Paul M. but Phil has virtually no name recognition----even though he has recorded more than 40 albums over the years.
In my opinion they should just stick with football at the superbowl.
I would like to see it all American. Shania is a canuck, and that wasn't even good enough for her, so she bailed to Switzerland with Mutt.
Since I'm not too swift with computers, does anyone know a site I can go to to hear it?
In which sports does Pitt play YSU? i realize since Penn State fled the Big East, that rivalry is no more, but when i was at Pitt, granted, many moons ago, we never played Youngstahn in anything!
Who needs prognosticating threads? Everyone knows that it is going to be a Corey Dillon Day.
I didn't hear about it until about five hours later myself.
dang, you are making my makeup run!
I was listening to a post game show on the radio and one of the hosts said that the NFL and CBS were issuing an apology for the "incident". I didn't know what the heck they were talking about.
The entertainment at the Super Bowl has changed over the years.

67 year old grannie here.
Who crapped in your Wheaties this morning? Or is your deck short just a few cards?
What about Kristy Jackson (post # 7), Toby Keith and George Strait?
Since I'm not anti-canuck that doesn't bother me.
I just look at her talent and all those cute little parts.
When did the network fagots and lesbians get a hold of the halftime show? This is football's finest moment - or at least it used to be...
And.............. the pro players hate the extended, longer halftime. Stiffen up, come back on the field and there's so much smoke you can't breathe.
I guess you saw this one yesterday......
The Official "I can't stand any more hype, let's play the freakin' Game" Superbowl Thread
Yep.
And for what it's worth, I love ZZTop, but when they did a halftime show several years ago...it sucked as bad as the rest do.
You bet!.....it would be a screamin half time show!....
bump
I guess football...... a few powder puffs early in the season, I guess.
I went to Pitt from '64 to '68. When did you go?
ff
I am not necessarily anti-canuck, and admire the parts as well, but it seems as though the only superbowl talent we get lately is foreignors of no-talent American skanks who have to do some really stupid crap for attention.
I would like to see talented Americans for halftime. Even if I don't watch the show, tht's my kids favorite part.
That one year Shania sang at the SB she looked like a space age dominatrix.
f
It's the symbol of America in the (bald) Eagles versus those who love America, the Patriots.
I think the Pats have the edge. How can you pick against what they have done? Either way, America can't lose.
I'd play the 'over' and hope for an entertaining game.
That should be *ff*
ff
112 yards I predict for a guy I always thought was great playing against my Steelers all those years. I always thought he was one of the top three or so backs in the NFL!! I still think so.
He's my pick for the game's MVP.
I agree! I don't watch the game for the half-time show, in fact I intentionally avoid watching it. I like the commercials but the good ones tend to be shown in the first quarter. All I really want is to watch a good football game.
