Senator Arlen Specter’s office just announced the senator has been diagnosed with Hodgkin’s disease. From the release:
Senator Specter had experienced persistent fevers and enlarged lymph nodes under his left arm and above his left clavicle. He received testing on February 14th at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. The testing involved biopsy of a lymph node and biopsy of bone marrow. The lymph node was positive for Hodgkin’s disease. The bone marrow biopsy showed no cancer. A follow up PET scan and MRI at the Abramson Cancer Center of the University of Pennsylvania on February 16th established that Senator Specter has stage IVB Hodgkin’s disease.

All the more reason to get Rendell the hell out of office next year. PA republicans currently favor Scanlon or another political has-been, Lynn Swann may make a run at the republican nod. I think he should get major support from PA repubs. He's got mine for one and I'd love to see PA's first black governor.
Tsongas had non-Hodgkins lymphoma. The cause of death was liver failure and pneumonia. Did the medicine kill him?
Schweiker would have lost to Rendell. I'm from Bucks. Schweiker had no appeal whatsoever and everyone in PA loves Fat Eddie, the football analyst.
I've said it before, Rendell would be the Dems' best candidate for president in 2008. Regular guy.
That would be awesome! It's just so dismaying because PA has a Republican controlled Congressional delegation, a Republican controlled Legislature, but hasn't gone for a Republican president since 1988.
I wouldn't be so sure. Schweiker had great pubic opinion ratings after his leadership in the rescue effort for those trapped miners from the cave-in. He at least would have been a better match than Mike Fisher.
I tend to think this state is red. Who knows what shenannigans the Rendell voter fraud machine cooked up in Pittsburgh, Harrisburg, Philly and the rest of the eastern half of the state.

It's gonna be harder to defend the Senate. Especially if Jim Clymer or another member of the Constitution Party runs again... Clymer got 4% of the vote this time around. In '06, such a turnout for a third-party candidate could spell the doom for Santorum.
For someone like me who leaves in the East. It's dismaying. My home county of Delaware has been one of the most enduring Republican strongholds in the country, but so many Philadelphians have moved in that the county went to Gore and now Kerry :-(
Oops. I posted on the other thread. My own case of Hodgkins, which I had 18 years ago was 3B, with 80% survival rate.
This says that Specter is 4B, with 70% survival rate. That's much better than 4B would have been in my time. 4B means that the disease is pretty well advanced (the worst possible is 5), and has spread down below the diaphram, which makes it much more serious.
The chemotherapy is exceedingly unpleasant. It knocks you out for a day, with extreme nausea and sleepiness (from the drugs that enable you to bear the treatment). After I had been treated for a few months it got so that driving anywhere near the hospital made me feel ill. But it had to be done.
Whether he remains as chair of the judiciary committee or resigns, it's vitally important that the work of confirming judges should not be impeded or delayed. My experience is that he would only be knocked out one day every two weeks, so maybe it's possible for him to continue if he's got the guts to do it.

I agree that the treatment makes you feel very ill. I cannot imagine being able to work during treatment. I did nothing but sleep all day.

Also, I don't see the kind of democratic turnout for the '06 elections here, I think Rendell is aiming for a higher government seat and may not put 100% effort into his re-election. He needs to be hammered on the property tax issue, especially here in the western half of the state. He said it would be his first priority after the gambling issue. We haven't seen a hint of any property tax reform.
