'Mouthy' traveler gets luggage blown up
World Net Daily ^ | February 19, 2005

Posted on 02/19/2005 4:42:49 AM PST by spectrout

Get "snippy" with an airlines' ticket agent and you may never see your luggage again.

That's the experience of Dr. Esha Khoshnu, a New Jersey psychiatrist traveling to San Diego to attend a conference.

While changing planes in Phoenix, Khoshnu got testy at a Mesa Airlines ticket counter, reports KGTV news, saying, "If I had a bomb, you wouldn't find it."

The Transportation Security Administration described Khoshnu as acting "mouthy and snippy," according to KGTV.

The bomb comment touched off a security scare and FBI officials were dispatched to question Khoshnu, who was subsequently detained long enough to miss her flight.

Her suitcase, however, got past security and was loaded onto the America West jet.

When Mesa Airlines Flight 6264 landed at Lindbergh Field in San Diego the pilot was instructed to taxi to a remote area of the airport where some 35 passengers were taken off the plane and escorted onto two buses, reports City News Service.

"When we landed and quickly did a U-turn on the runway, I was like, 'They never do that.' Then, all the cars started coming and it was obvious that it was for our plane. That was the scary part," one passenger told KGTV.

City News Service reports members of the San Diego Fire Department's bomb squad searched the plane but found no explosives. Next, they removed Khoshnu's suitcase and inspected it in an open area on the grounds of the airport.

Although they found nothing suspicious, authorities blew up the bag with an explosive charge and then doused it with water.

Khoshnu was eventually released and allowed to board a later flight to San Diego. KGTV reports the Assistant U.S. Attorney in Phoenix decided her actions did not merit charges.

So they searched it. Then they blew it up. Maybe next time she won't say she has a bomb.

The salient point is the was no bomb and the govt knew it but destroyed private property anyway.

Because she was "snippy".

How about if she writes a letter to the editor critical of the govt and TSA and as a result the govt blows up her house?

Because she was "snippy" again.

I think they are going to make a movie of the New Jersey psychiatrist traveling to San Diego to attend a conference.

It will be called What about Bomb?, It will be about a psychiatrist, whose San Diego vacation is ruined when she shoots off her mouth. They are thinking about getting Richard Dryfuss to play the Psychiatrist, and Bill Murray to play the Ticket Agent.

If you never fly, you never have to deal with the high school dropout TSA goons rooting through your underwear and feeling up your crotch in airports.

You don't have to give any money to the airlines, either, which is why all but a handful are about to go belly up.

Exactly, especially since she said they'd never find it.
When in doubt, render it inoperable.
As a psychiatrist, you'd think she'd know better.

Maybe next time she passes through here she'll keep her manners with her, instead of checking them in.

The point is that you don't act like an idiot at the airport.

Wrong again.

You need to accept reality. The current situation at airports will not only get worse it will spread to other parts of our lives.

And it is just a matter of time until another Janet Reno is calling the shots rather than an Ashcroft.

And at that point some flaming liberal will be deciding by fiat what constitutes "stupid" behavior and therefore deserves state sanctions.

That is the point and you better think long and hard about it.

I'll never set foot on another commercial aircraft again.

I'm like Claire Wolfe in this regard - I won't fly not because I am afraid I would kick the snot out of some TSA thug who groped my wife or otherwise insulted me.

I am afraid I would not kick the snot out of the knuckledragger for fear of going to jail.

And that is precisely what the state wants.

I don't mouth off to airline people or people who handle food I'm going to eat...its not worth it.

I never get testy with food service handlers. My hubby got testy with a worker at a Taco Bell here in town. I took my little girl and left him standing at the counter. He followed me and asked me why I was mad. I told him because there was no way I was going to eat at a place where the employees were angry at a customer.....they may spit in your food. Having a couple of hard shelled tacos and a steak gordita wasn't worth it.

Getting "snippy" is one thing. Using words that indicate that you could have hidden bomb that no one would find are quite another. They blew up her bag because if - as she said - "you couldn't find it" - and they didn't...perhaps they believed she might have done a really good job in concealing it. Who would want to take the chance? I would rather err on the side of caution when it concerns a statement about a bomb. She could have made any "snippy" statement - even cursed at them if she cared to, and it would have been a simple verbal argument. But she chose to insinuate that she was so smart (and they were so dumb)that she could conceal a bomb that they could not find- and that was idiotic of her.

And, imagine if some other passenger had heard what she said and spent the flight shaking in fear that she had not just been "snippy,"but had, infact, been flaunting her ability to hide something. Her words about a bomb could have caused others to be really stressed during their entire flight. Is it her right to make others worry - simply because she was not happy?

Actually, however, you missed the main point of my comment. My main concern is not with her. My main concern is that if, indeed, she had hidden a bomb in her luggage...and the luggage went on while she was detained - then a lot of people could have died, and she would have been safe and achieved her goal. That the authorities did not remove her luggage BEFORE the plane flew across the country astounds me. And makes me wonder about that whole security check process. That bag should have been pulled immediately.

One occasion, years ago (years prior to 9/11 even) I was waiting to board a plane when the man in front of me joked about having a gun. His words were "Oh, yeah, I could be hiding my gun in my underwear, right?" I will never forget it. We were all astonished. They wisked him away. And, wow, was his family was ANGRY at HIM, for being such a "meathead," and that is the exact word his wife used. He missed the flight because he had to be questioned. His family talked about him throughout the flight and what they were going to do to him when he finally got to their destination. They were not going to throw him a party for sure - and they were not angry with the airline. Those who "joke" about such serious things are not funny. If they miss their plains, or their luggage is damaged - so be it. No one made them make their ridiculous statements.

All I can say is God save the Republic.

Ben Franklin was right on two counts - his comments about (a) liberty and temporary safety and (b) "a Republic if you can keep it."

You can solace in the fact that I am in the minority on this. The bad news is the fact that means the grand experiment has failed.

Has there ever been a case where a terrorist got snippy with authorities and mentioned a hypothetical bomb?

Not that I can recall. However, I am reminded of one of the terrorists who tried to blow up the WTC in '93 and was caught after raising a ruckus while demanding that the deposit he paid on the (now blown-up) van he rented be returned to him.

"Everyone in this story looks like an idiot:"
and
"The TSA clowns at Phoenix who let her bag get on board, or at least didn't take if off the plane before it departed--gross negligence and incompetence."

Gross negligence and incompetence indeed. If they had held the baggage they wouldn't have had to go through that drill of isolating the aircraft or blowing up the luggage, which only compounded their idiocy.

This is just another reason why I refuse to subject myself to the TSA's antics and drive - over-reaction blended with the incompetence described above.

Thug? Do I smell an agenda?

TSA inspected the luggage and found no bomb.

TSA blew up the suitcase anyway.

Yep. Right after the idiot said "If I had a bomb, you wouldn't find it."

Conclusion: The TSA blew up her suitcase because she got "snippy" with a knuckledragging public servant.

Um, no. She made a statement that was alarming. They behaved in a cautionary manner. You obviously have a preconceived dislike for the TSA employees.

I'm sorry, and I don't want this interpreted as angry words, but consider the whole of this story.

“…When Mesa Airlines Flight 6264 landed at Lindbergh Field in San Diego the pilot was instructed to taxi to a remote area of the airport where some 35 passengers were taken off the plane and escorted onto two buses, reports City News Service.”

"When we landed and quickly did a U-turn on the runway, I was like, 'They never do that.' Then, all the cars started coming and it was obvious that it was for our plane. That was the scary part," one passenger told KGTV.

Link to story in worldnetdaily

Handling this situation required emergency security procedures at two separate airports, the FBI, fire department, bomb squad, police, etc. – all at a cost to the taxpayer, and inconvenience of people and passengers at the airports.

This woman is lucky that they only blew up her suitcase and she was not charged with anything.

Her “bomb” comment was what caused her to give up her liberty. Not the fact that she was “snippy.” Had she said she they couldn’t have found a tampon or something equally harmless that she hid, it would have been different.

Don’t use Ben Franklin’s phrase wrongly – it is my favorite, and on my wall. She gave up her own liberties when she infringed on the rights of others to travel and work without the stress of a bomb scare.

And I still think the security failed miserably when it did not remove her baggage prior to the flight. That the baggage traveled, ironically, proved her own snippy comment.

Notice they didn't say that "she posed a slight security risk", only that she was "mouthy and snippy". Nothing she did merited even a grand jury investigation, let alone an attempt at prosecution. This episode should be a lesson to all that the current TSA system is terribly broken.

Dr. Khoshnu has been practicing psychiatry since finishing training at Yale University in 1993. She has extensive training/experience in crisis intervention, psychopharmacology, and psychotherapy. Her approach focuses on meeting the needs of the individual in order to provide wellness. She has long-term interests in recognizing and treating the special needs of women.
