But let me add, while we are all making armchair judgements...
The fact that she fled makes me think she was doing something wrong (maybe speeding off to her next location, or not looking, or something). I understand the panic instinct, but if it isn't your fault, and you aren't threatened (refer to an earlier post) would you just move the kid off to the side and drive off? The story indicates the child was still alive. My goodness, wouldn't you try to help?
Again, need to know the circumstances..
Kind of miss the Good Humor Man or Mr Softee from where i grew up in Brooklyn with the bells jingling. Some of these drivers were all characters out of a TV show.
Guess this happens several times a year around the USA. Parents too buys paying attention to other things than the kids. Similar to the swimming pool drownings or other incidents
A twelve year old on a low bicycle once ran a stop sign and rode right in front of me. He came out from behind a car that had stopped at the stop sign, so I didn't see him. I was going slow, as I always do at that intersection, so he just rolled up on to the hood of my Suburban, I stopped within a few feet, and was only shaken up.
There were witnesses -- both cars that had been stopped at the stop sign on the cross street, and one called the police. When the policeman got there, and the witnesses confirmed what had happened, the policeman issued a ticket to the twelve year old. He told me he knew the kid's family -- they were trouble. He didn't want me to get sued, so he issued the citation to create a record. Bless his heart.
"Where was mom, leaving a two year old unattended in a parking lot? When my younuns were that age, I held on to them with a vise-like grip anywhere near a street, parking lot, etc."
The adult responsible for this 2 year old needs a public caning!
You were lucky. I wish that the cop in my husband's situation had done the same thing, but it probably didn't cross his mind to ticket a 7 year old.
The most galling thing about the incident was that the mother must have gone into the house after the accident and immediately called a lawyer because my husband received the papers in two days in the regular mail.
I wonder if this dizty ice cream truck driver could have helped if she got medical attention for this poor baby instead of fleeing the scene with blood on her hands.
This was so preventable.
That's insane. You should never leave the scene of an accident, you should leave your vehicle right where it is. Driving away only hinders the investigation and DOES make you look guilty. (Even if you showed up at the police station later, it would appear like this guy's situation -- thought better of it and changed your mind so turned yourself in). Advising others to leave the scene of an accident is TERRIBLE advice, both morally and legally.
Maybe "Angela Rodriguez" is an illegal alien and THAT'S why she fled the scene.
Better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6!
I am not exaggerating when I alluded to the fact that had the response been any slower by the LEO's, I would have faced grave danger. To stay for any extended period of time would have meant risking my life.
I suspect the response time was driven by a possibly "known" area, known for violence. When the LEO's first arrived on the scene they put me in a car and spent several minutes to a half hour, breaking up the "mob".
"Maybe "Angela Rodriguez" is an illegal alien and THAT'S why she fled the scene."
I was a little taken aback by this statement.. and I still am, it's quite a piece of stereotyping (if her name was Wang, we could chalk it up to her being a reckless Asian driver, right? j/k)
BUT... I have to grudgingly admit, the idea does merit some consideration.. it might explain the run (while not making it the least bit defensible)..
Ah, what would message boards be without wild speculation!
Sure, it crossed my mind too -- that she was perhaps illegal. Stereotypes do have truth to them, you know. Also that she left if it was a housing development and it was dangerous for her to stay. I would have left if that were the case, too. But I would have called 911.
Would you offer the same argument if the child was found at the bottom of the swimming pool?
