(WTNH, Mar. 11, 2005 Updated 12:00 PM ) _ A police chase ended just a short time ago behind the Columbus School in the Fair Haven section of New Haven and as a precaution school officials locked down the school.
According to New Haven Police the chase started this morning after the mother of the suspect called police around 9:00 a.m. She met police officers at a parking lot where she told them her son had a shotgun, was very angry and was on his way to kill his girlfriend. That is when the chase began.
Witnesses tell News Channel 8 that a black Ford Explorer sped down Grand Ave. towards Blatchley St. Police cruisers chased the vehicle at a high rate of speed. In order to stop the Explorer, a police cruiser intentionally collided with it near the intersection of Grand Ave. and Filmore.
Witnesses say the suspect got out of the Explorer carrying a shotgun. He ran down Filmore, holding the gun backwards and under his arm, firing at police officers who were in pursuit; officers returned fire.
The chase proceeded behind the Columbus School.
Police shot the man numerous times, he was taken away by ambulance, and has died. Police have not released the man's identity.
A school spokesperson says that the students are fine and were never in danger. School is still in progress and will stay in session. Parents should not come to school unless advised to do so by the school.
The streets around Grand Ave. and Blatchley St. are still closed.
Where exactly is this?
The perp was shot dead by police...
Please Freepmail me if you want on or off my infrequent Connecticut ping list.
I used to live in Fair Haven on Ferry Street. It was a nasty neighborhood.
How many police chase gundowns will we have today?
I'm setting the over/under at five.
I live about an hour north of New Haven - I don't really know the New Haven area that well. From what I've noticed over the years, Fair Haven seems to be featured in the local news pretty often for violent events like this.
Yeah, it's an unusually busy day for this stuff, unfortunately...
I was about to ping you to this. And hey, get off the phone, I'm trying to call you.
They used to lock down prisons, now they lock down schools.
Wonder what changed?
"How many police chase gundowns will we have today? "
My wife claims "everything happens in threes"
So I calculate one more.
Where abouts? I grew up in North Haven. Fair Haven, years ago, was a pretty nice place. Mostly Italian, neat and tidy...That WAS years ago.
I've lived in a lot of places. Always ended up back in CT...until Leowell Wanker passed the state income tax. That was it for me. Never going back for any reason.
FMCDH(BITS)
Good news, he was shot. I am only 2 towns away!
It has not improved any lately. There is too much public housing which can't be good for anyone.
Ping
Good outcome! Saves the state the cost of housing, food, etc. and at the same time keeps one more scumbag from passing on his genes.
