Mexican president announces initiative for North American cooperation
Fort Worth Star-Telegram/AP ^ | March 16, 2005 | John Rice

MEXICO CITY - The leaders of the United States, Mexico and Canada, confronting the growth of rival groups in Europe and Asia, hope to strengthen their free-trade pact by signing an "Initiative for North America" next week in Texas, Mexico President Vicente Fox said Wednesday.

But Fox made clear that tensions remain over how to secure the countries' borders, criticizing new U.S. walls running along parts of its 2,000-mile frontier with Mexico. "No country that is proud of itself should build walls," he said.

Fox, President Bush and Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin are scheduled to meet March 23 at Bush's Crawford, Texas, ranch during Bush's Easter vacation.

. . . .

Speaking at a news conference with U.S. and Canadian reporters, Fox vowed to take legal action against migrant-hunting vigilantes in Arizona and promised to fight terrorism.

. . .

But in both Spanish and English, Fox repeatedly expressed concern about state initiatives to limit rights of migrants and services for them in the United States, and about the U.S. government's effort to slow migration by building walls.

"We are convinced that walls don't work. They should be torn down," Fox said. He called the walls "discriminatory; they attack liberty. So no country that is proud of itself should build walls. Nobody can isolate himself these days."

. . .

He said Mexicans "totally reject" the migrant hunters recently formed in Arizona to help stem the illegal crossings there, which have risen partly because of the construction of walls elsewhere. The vigilantes "are completely in violation of American law itself and in violation of laws anywhere," Fox said.

He said Mexico "will be very alert to react legally against any lawbreaking" by those groups, either under U.S. or international law.

"No country that is proud of itself should build walls," he said.

The walls that we're buidling - and there's not nearly enough of them, imo - are not designed to keep people jailed within (like the Berlin Wall), they're meant to keep (certain) people out.

This very important distinction seems to be lost on many.

Mexico needs to drastically reform.

Some others -- and liberals, at that! -- agree with you.

Someone needs to put a muzzle on this POS and President Bush had better realize his stance on the immigration issue is completely out of step with the majority of Americans and can only hurt the Republican party AND OUR NATION.

Put two fences with large rather hungery dogs in between

Put our nation's Pit Bulls to good use.

How about the immigration wall you put on your southern border Fox? Your leadership is a failure. You export your poor - you loser.

Why don't we just annex Mexico.

Great idea! That way the immigrants don't have to "come" to America, because they would already be "here"! ;^)

LOL - But at least there you didn't have a Mod waiting to ban you. This Immigration thing along with our crappy trade Policies get me in the 'Blue Steak' mood all too often these day. :-)

Join me in praying that our President does not make any statements denouncing our patriots at this March 23 meeting.

If he does I would predict that his administration just for all practicality ended.

My response to el presidente:

Hey Senor Fox, instead of worrying about what we do in the US, why don't you worry about improving the cesspool of a country you're running so that maybe half your population won't feel the need to flee. Think you could try that for a while?
With great weather, coasts on 2 oceans, and huge amounts of natural resources, there is absolutely no reason why your people's economic standing should rest solely on the continued raping of another country. If this is the best you can do with an ideally located potential goldmine of a country than maybe you should step aside and let us run it for you.

Sincerly,
el Gringo Loco

Why don't we just annex Mexico.

I keep pointing this out, but we already did annex the whole of the northern half of Mexico after the Mexican-American War:

And just how does Vincente Fox treat illegals who sneak across Mexico's southern border? Why is this never reported?

..........not unlike taking on Puerto Rico.

At least Puerto Rico contributes a few good MLB players now and then. What does Mexico contribute that is of any significance?

Only in your dreams. Most voters do not allow a single issue to effect how they vote or who they support. History has shown that single issue candidates rarely win national elections or gather much support. I guess that is why Pat Buchanan is down in the ash heap of political has-beens where he belongs has the only thing he could run on was immigration and never got more than a fraction of the vote.
