I also find it amazing that it is the morally compass-less Democrats who are defending Terri's right to end her tortured parody of life and the Republican opportunists who are insisting that 15 years of force feeding and diapering isn't enough punishment. Politics does indeed sometimes make strange bedfellows.
Having followed this case for some time, and looked into it myself, my prayer is that truth and sanity will prevail over lies and sanctimony.
Obviously you are in favor of euthanasia.
Next some judge will rule that people aren't allowed to be cared for by their loving families (as Terri's parents want to care for her), but anyone who is found to not have a life worth living, as determined by some judges, should be starved to death.
I guess, soon that will include anyone with any mental or physical disabilities of any age, and Republicans (Howard Dean called Republicans "brain dead", so I guess we all deserve to be euthanized, right?)
I never saw this woman until today when I caught a few minutes of her on C-SPAN talking about W's actions as governor, and it was pretty funny. I was busy with something while it was on in the background and I kept asking "Who IS this person?" Listening to her babbling had me very confused as to her intellectual capacity.
Someone posted that Terri has an infection and is running a high fever. She may have gotten the infection, when her feeding tube was removed.
So THIS time it was done in the non-sterile HOSPICE.
That's a fellony right there.
Thank you, Lord! Now, if we could just eliminate Michael Schiavo as Terri's guardian and return her to the loving care of her parents AND the rehabilitation that should have been given her long ago, perhaps we could all move on with our lives.

Two points. I didn't say she was aware. She isn't aware of anything. She is gone.
Secondly, I don't think her brain is gone. All of the doctors who have examined here -- including the parents' doctors agree that the brain is physically gone, missing, not there. The only disagreement is that the parents' doctors -- without a scintilla of support in any medical literature -- think that perhaps some of the cells in her brain stem which remains (and keeps her breathing) could be trained. Her brain is gone, folks. G-O-N-E. As Judge Greer said 13 years ago, "the court finds beyond all doubt that [Terri] is in a persistent vegetative state .... The medical evidence before this court conclusively establishes that she has no hope of ever regaining consciousness and therefore capacity."
I think the most humorous aspect of all this is the large number of people for whom an organism without a brain who had some bizarre form of 'food' shoved through her body and into her diapers for 15 years is somehow representative of their version of "life".

No, but I am in favor of letting people end their own lives with dignity. If you don't agree (and all those who think Terri needs a few more years of force feeding and diapers), you should start wearing diapers. After all, what's good enough for you to force on poor defenseless Terri is good enough for you.
I think we should all buy stock in "Depends." With this group of yoyos in Congress, there is going to be a run on Depends. (All puns intended.)

All who want to be, yes. What is missing in your one-size-fits-all absolutism is that Terri, like me and millions of others, did not want to be maintained by artificial means. The only problem was that Terri, like most young adults, told people (her husband, her brother-in-law and sister-in-law) but didn't have her wishes written down. So, now, people who want to make some political point can make it at her expense.
I would certainly want to be allowed to die in such a terrible circumstance and my durable power of attorney so provides. As Paul said, we of all people should not grieve over physical life "... like the rest who have no hope." (1 Thess 4:13b).
BTW, I believe that most conservatives are Christians, but I realize that some aren't. If you are one of the latter, i.e. a conservative but not a Christian, it might make good sense NOT to direct such a course of action for yourself.

She's not ending her life. Michael Schiavo is. There is a distinct difference. There was no conscious decision made by Terri.
I do not believe God condones murder. Just like abortion, this decision is being made by someone else. There was never a time-a corroborated time-that Terri indicated that her life be terminated should she end up in this condition. Not once, just speculation and hear say.

I don't understand the argumentative tone. I asked a simple question, openly, and you, as all the others with your position here, turn it into something it is not. I'm not proposing any kind of absolutism; I merely asked a question.

Well, that's kind of a big issue, isn't it, not some minor quibble?
Nothing stops people who feel strongly about this from rushing out on any business day and getting a DNR order. Nothing.
Is it that big a strain on people to expect them to actually put it in writing that they want to be starved to death in certain situations? Isn't that kind of why we have such things in the first place?
Supposedly she told one person this, this one person having no other evidence except his word.
Folks who want folks to have the right to end their lives have this weird new standard--it used to be that one should have the right to get a court-approved document that siad "In such event..." You got that. NOW it's "If they tell one other person at some point, even if there is no other documentation proving it."
How about people who were born in the state Terri is in? Don't they have to endure the same situations you described if their brains are also GONE? Should we starve them too? I mean, aren't they suffering and deserving of mercy, too?
WHAT WAS THE VOTE? wHO WAS FOR AND WHO WAS AGAINST?
