Pa. College Professor Arrested at Schiavo Hospice

A professor at a Bible college near Scranton, Pa., was arrested Tuesday as he tried to storm into the hospice caring for Terri Schiavo.

Dow Pursley, 56, was zapped with a Taser stun gun and tackled to the ground by officers before he reached the door, Pinellas Park police said. He became the 47th protester arrested.

Pursley, who is on the faculty of the Baptist Bible College & Seminary in Clarks Summit, Pa., had two bottles of water with him, police said. He was charged with attempted burglary and resisting arrest.

Baptist Bible College officials said in a written statement that Pursley was not acting on the school's behalf and had traveled to Florida on his personal time.

"He is a dedicated man with strong beliefs and God-given convictions," the statement said.

Pursley is the clinical director of counseling programs for the theological college's graduate school. He also helps oversee a campus clinic that offers psychological counseling based on biblical teaching.

Baptist Bible College spokesman Mark Robbins said that while the college "believes in the sanctity of life," it has not taken an official position on the Schiavo case.

Doctors said that Schiavo, 41, would probably die within a week or two after the tube was removed on March 18. She suffered catastrophic brain damage in 1990 when her heart stopped for several minutes because of a chemical imbalance.

He tried. God bless him, and protect him.

Sounds like someone with contact with the Pinellas Park cops paid attention to my concern with the fact that they came to the demonstration prepared to do nothing other than shoot the demonstrators.

Tasers do avoid unnecessary carnage.

Some folks are more concerned with their apparant public reputation than with righteousness.

Enjoy Judgment Day.

Good intent, but I have to wonder if we aren't getting beyond a point of no return. By now her organs must be starting to shut down. Damage is being done that cannot be undone by water and food.

I'm disappointed and heartbroken by all this, but I think it is over.

attempted burglary?

Apparently, he was there to commit the crime of providing water to a fellow human being dying of thirst...

Didn't the family request that this not be done any more, that the vigil remain peaceful? If so, their wishes should be followed.

Civil disobedience on his rap sheet is enough to get him offers at any number of Ivy League schools.

He just has to keep quiet about what he was being disobedient about.

I understand how everyone is focusing on Teri and making their statements by protesting and trying to storm the building. But how many other people at this moment are suffering her same fate in the countless hospices around the country? I haven't heard or read any numbers on this. Just because there's no cameras I'm sure there are others who could use a voice on their behalf.

I am truly disgusted at the attempted burglary charge. What a load of horse manure. He should fight this and sue the police for false arrest on a trumped up charge.

There was a reference to this in an earlier thread today re: Jesse Jackson's visit. I am going to include here what I posted on that thread:

"Dow Pursley, 56, of Scranton, Pa., was shocked with a Taser stun gun and was arrested on charges of attempted burglary and resisting arrest without violence, police spokesman Sanfield Forseth said."

Attempted burglary? What was he going to steal?

If he was going in to get Terri, shouldn't he have been charged with attempted kidnapping?

Sigh. She really has been reduced to a possession.

He was armed with two very dangerous water bottles. I'm surprised there is not a charge enhancement for that.
