U.S. Military Wants Weapons In Space

The Bush administration is advocating the weaponization of space to sustain the global dominance of the U.S. military

While the aggressive new policy aimed at making U.S. satellites capable of striking enemy targets both on the ground and in orbit may be scuttled by controversy or prohibited by cost, elements within the White House and the Pentagon will continue to stress the military's increasing dependence on satellite technology and the dangers associated with sharing more and more outer-space real estate with other nations not always in synch with U.S. interests, the Christian Science Monitor reported

That implies that we are going to defend the rest of the planet. If anyone other than our allies wants protection, they'll have to pay for it. Of course, France will have a special rate (20 times the cost of anyone else if we even decide to entertain an offer from them).

Already doing it, more or less. This would just extend the reach further, and may lead to stronger alliances that don't require mustering troops on the ground, just a push of a button. First target: the U.N.

That is a helluva lot better than "UN Spacey" (that is for the fellow Macross fans out there)

I have also noticed UNTSPACY for Gundam. :)

Aahhhhh! Im taking a break for 10 minutes from writing my darn thesis that has been consuming my life for the last week and will for the next two and come here and find this on freerepublic. My thesis is about space weapons during the Cold War (lots of ASAT discussion) and has some discussion about a seperate service for space.

Anyway, this is nothing new. Just about every administration has considered an ASAT capability. We've had a ground based one before under Johnson. Carter supported them. He didnt really want to, but he felt forced into it. Reagan supported space based ones vigorously but the democratic congress refused to let him test it. Yeah, so basically this article could have been written right after sputnik or any time during the Cold War.

All the libs who scream "bush the warmonger is putting weapons in space and space is sacred" well their hero Carter was second only to Reagan.

heh heh heh
I personally don't have any plans to try and become a dictator or despot of a 3rd World country , develop illegal weapons of mass destruction or threaten neighboring countries or the world. I also have no plans to become a leader that viciously oppresses his own people breaking all bounds of reason with cruelty.
If prominent individuals chose to do these things or take these positions , then the device is employed .

I would not doubt we have had weapons in orbit for years. We still have a few secrets left even if the BENT ONE sold everything he could talk the pentegon out of.

Maybe there was a higher wisdom to what he did. It's a dangerous game, stimulating foreign competition, if it goes beyond a certain point and the whole disappears in a nuclear flash, but while it is working it would promote growth.

When will be be attacking the martians?

As soon as they come try mess with us. If we wait until they actually start to mess with us before building a space force, it's going to be kind of late to so when "Mars Attacks".

The same principal applies the ChiComs or some other earthly power yet to come to the fore.

Ah, like SAINT? Find anything on the SAINT II manned satellite interceptor? The Dyna Soar satellite interceptor, with its missiles and M-16-derived weapons are well known, and even the Gemini derived satellite interceptor at least has an illustration, but I've never been able to locate any design info on SAINT II.
