The pope is a religious leader, not a head of state.

Correction: The Pope is a religious leader and a head of state.

WRONG. The Pope IS the head of state of the State of the Vatican. The Vatican City, officially the State of the Vatican City (Latin: Status Civitatis Vaticanæ, Italian Stato della Città del Vaticano), is a landlocked enclave surrounded by the city of Rome in Italy, and the smallest independent state in the world (both in area and in population). The Vatican is the home of the Pope, and forms the territory of the Holy See, the central authority of the Roman Catholic Church. The Vatican City includes the Vatican Hill (Mons Vaticanus), whose name predates Christianity, and the Vatican Fields north of the hill, upon which St. Peter's Basilica, the Sistine Chapel, and the Vatican Museums are built.

Nonetheless, nobody NEEDS to pay their respects to anyone. However, given this man's stature in the world and the historic changes he influenced it could not have hurt.

He is not a mayor, although I'm pretty sure you're aware of that. He is the head of a sovereign nation, albeit a very small one.

Nevertheless, whether you like it or not, he is a major world figure.

Do you think these San Francisco politicians would miss a memorial service for, say, Kofi Annan...or Fidel Castro?

"Although specifically invited by phone and fax, no elected city officials were present -- not the mayor, not one member of the Board of Supervisors,''

Just politicians pandering to their depraved base.

He's the equivelant of a mayor in Italy. The worth of that is debatable. I used the words "head of state" in describing him last night in an email to a fellow freeper; but, He's not a head of state in the traditional sense.

The man's stature is a matter for the beholder. His influence and the impact of it is a matter that is open to debate. Pro or con, it doesn't matter to San Fran or Otisburg unless they have some familiarity on which to base any felt need. But don't worry, I'm sure they're not going to attend the funerals of any Islamist leaders in the near future either...

Packing fudge is such an effort; the poor "boys" must all be so exhausted.

While they might want to pretend to be something more noble, this organization appears to be nothing more then a bunch of horny, drag queens thumbing their noses at decent society. What a waste of human life and the prescious souls God gave us. In the interest of doing the right thing though, may God have mercy on them and may the Holy Spirit change some lives in that sinful enclave.

Wrong!!!

Vatican City is the smallest country in the world. This makes the pope the head of state.

Okay, so you're not into Catholics and the praise being given to Pope John Paul II sickens you. The only question here is, why do you think we care?

The real problem is that the archdiocese INVITED them all. They (the government officials in question) are all baby-killers. They shouldn't have been invited, and they shouldn't have been welcome, and they shouldn't have been there. Seems to me, the baby-killers have a better sense of what the Mass is about than the archbishop and his bureaucrats.

Right, The smallest country in the world. Why, because it's a city. He's a glorified mayor. Get it yet?

I didn't say that. I said you're expectations of San Fran's city politicians is a bit overboard in my appraisal. That's a long way from what you just said.

Vatican City is just that, a city. He is the mayor of a city which happens to be a small nation. It is a unique position and thusly he is not a head of state in the traditional sense.
Words mean things. He's a glorified mayor.

In fact, the Castro District used to be primarily an area predominantly blue-collar Irish Catholic, before the sodomites moved in.
