Invoking symbols ranging from the Revolutionary War to Martin Luther King Jr., armed vigilantes are patrolling a segment of the Arizona-Mexico border and taking the enforcement of immigration law into their own hands. While they claim only to offer support to the Border Patrol, the Mexican government is on edge, human rights activists have flooded the area, and President Bush has distanced himself from the effort.

As always....the average joe says..to hell with this!...I'm heading for the Arizona border!
She has not given any support to the minutemen.
If the government won't defend America, then it's citizens will!.
These vigilante groups are emboldened by political demagogues who, for example, file federal legislation allowing bounty hunters to pursue immigrants.
Many in the anti-immigration movement feel we cannot reform the immigration system until we get control of our borders.
However, since our system does not provide opportunities for legal immigration, people are pushed underground.
That is all I could read. The writer for the Boston Globe is so far out of touch with reality it is frightening.
If that is the case, then FR is also out of touch.
The writer mentions his support for guest worker plans.
A recent poll of FR members show support of guest worker plans at over 2 to 1. 60% for and 28% opposed.
FR is a far right website and functions as an internet center of the anti immigrant crowd. It is safe to say, given the support at FR, that support of guest worker plans amongst the general population would be at 5, 6, or 7 to 1.
This is possibly the dumbest line ever written. It almost sounds as if the Boston Herald author is encouraging a pseudo-underground railroad to bypass the actual laws of the land.
There are a few who are against any type of immigration. I disagree with them but thats their perogative. However, this author makes it sound as being against illegal immigration is a horror. He also does not discern between legal immigration and illegal immigration.
He is an idiot. I would be willing to bet a sizable amount that he votes for Kennedy. Any takers? No? Didn't think so :)
BOUNTY HUNTERS????
Who offered bounties, how much? God the MM are effective beyond their numbers in driving these liberal SOBs crazy.
Exactly what planet does the writer live on?
How many times must it be pointed out that we're objecting to ILLEGAL immigrants? Keep trying to frame it as an anti-immigrant bias if you want, but we both know that's just an attempt to spin this issue and demonize the anti-ILLEGAL immigrant crowd. A legit guest worker program would be OK with me, far-right-winger that I am, but not the version proposed by GWB. He wants to create a job magnet that would draw people here, but have no enforceable way to get them to go home again when their time is up.
Invoking symbols ranging from the Revolutionary War to Martin Luther King Jr., first amendment rights armed vigilantes are patrolling a segment of the Arizona-Mexico border and taking the enforcement of immigration law into their own hands Ali Noorani takes pen in hand and plays fast and loose with the truth.
While they claim only to offer support to the Border Patrol,
They're not "claiming" to support the Border Patrol, they are supporting the BP
...the Mexican government is on edge,
The edge of a cliff? If so, somebody give 'em a shove.
...human rights activists have flooded the area,
They're always such a help. (/sarc)
...and President Bush has distanced himself from the effort.
Right after he called them vigilantes.
"It almost sounds as if the Boston Herald author is encouraging a pseudo-underground railroad to bypass the actual laws of the land."
Boston Globe, not Boston Herald. Big difference.
...armed vigilantes are patrolling a segment of the Arizona-Mexico border and taking the enforcement of immigration law into their own hands.

The likelihood for human tragedy is high.

Such individuals have no interest in our national security and are willing to dismiss America's values and history for the sake of political gain.

A guest worker is here legally. I have no problem with that. My problem is with the illegals.
At current levels of legal immigration our schools, hospitals and social safety net are being crushed by the numbers.
This author think we are idiots if he thinks our communities will prosper if we let in more.
The only economic winners are the immigrants and employers. The American people will pay through the nose for this cheap labor subsidy and it does not matter if they come in legally or illegally. It is all about the overwhelming numbers.
It's time that Americans directly address the ridiculous line of thinking made by advocates for unfettered immigration that asserts the "right" of every foreign individual in any foreign land to make some future claim to enter the US as an immigrant. The Constitution does not specify this "right". In fact, there have been many instances in the past where the American government restricted immigration in attempts to control the inflow of the numbers and types of immigrants to serve a greater national interest. It seems to me that national security would demand that we address the unbelievable danger we have now with over 10 MILLION ILLEGALS hidden away, untracked and unchecked, in the corners of our society at this time. I now believe the Statue of Liberty was a Trojan Horse given to us by the nefarious French to undermine our society by bamboozling the American people with malevolent mythology about "Give me your tired, your hungry, your poor, etc..." becoming part of our national creed and driving the unlearned to expect that we have some sort of responsibilituy to accept the dregs of the whole world ad infinitum!
No taker here.
Ain't that something?

I really need to work with this Preview button...
The poll and the writer's view are based on the guest worker being a solution to the problem of illegals.
More specifically, 60% of freepers favor converting the illegals into guest workers.
DA
Problem solved.
Except for the millions who are already here.
4. Deport illegal aliens.
Agreed.
The Boston Globe doesn't get it ~ illegal, is illegal, is illegal ~ what's so hard to understand!
When we break the law, we get busted ~ when foreign citizens break the law, they get deified!
Polls are irrelevant!
Be Ever Vigilant!

Hey, I'm the King of public goof-ups, no worries. =]
I don't know anyone in Mass who doesn't vote for Ted.
President Bush, Senators Edward Kennedy and John McCain, and a growing number of leaders in both parties have put a new approach on the table. This approach would create legal channels for immigrants seeking opportunity, allow immigrants here to come out of the shadows and participate legally in society, deploy humane, intelligent border security measures, and cut off the black market for fake documents, exploitative employers, violent criminals, smugglers, and the like.
This seems reasonable to me.

...and a hit dog always hollers.
And that proves the point that they are not only offering support to the Border Patrol? What a classic example of not proving one's point but making it seem so through gross obfuscation.
If illegals are ALREADY here and working the current system, why should they bother with jumping through hoops to make themselves a "legal" migrant worker? There is no incentive without the threat of ILLEGALS being sent BACK to where they came from.
Kick up the numbers for legal immigration. Streamline the process. What ever we can do and still control the entry process. But to offer a covert AMNESTY will do nothing to deter further unLawful behavior.
Hmmm, the ACLU is against the Minutemen. I guess you and the ACLU think the same way, Dane.
We could play your games for hours, as a substitute for actual debate. But you're really not interesting in the latter, are you?

Cool the rhetoric; you haven't a clue about who my 'heroes' are, and I can assure you they would not associate with you.
Of course not. Liberals like your "hero's" don't associate with conservatives like me.
EMW
One of the problems with such feel good rhetoric is that you bypass rational thought.
Let's bankrupt all the tourist joints in this country and keep all them thar fureners from pollutin' our rivers and such.
Geesh.

Still banging away with your "hillary" lines, eh, Dane? Maybe you should ask your programmers to give you a new line, that ones getting a little tedious.
