I actually like the moniker he's already gotten stuck with on this thread--"Der Panzer Pope." Hey, a Panzerkampfwagen V (aka the Tiger tank) was a heck of a great piece of work... :)
Seriously, though, I'm very happy to see this. May Benedict XVI be blessed with a productive reign, advance God's work here on Earth, and in God's good time, be called home to his deserved reward once his job here is done.

There is a book called "Catholicism for Dummies". It's written by a priest, and despite the irreverent title, is very clear and orthodox. You could probably get it on Amazon.

You know I'm thinking....for the next two weeks or so while the left is wetting the bed over this election, NOW is the time for state legislators and members of Congress to introduce some hard core pro traditional marriage and pro life measures....ideally this legislative charge should be led by Prots and Jews and non-believing conservatives. We should wage a frontal assault on the left for the next few weeks. It may not get anything done, but it could very well scare the hell out of the left!!!
If I were Ratzinger - and I'm not - Im a married Baptist - but I would make my sole priority this:
wipe abortion off the face of the planet.

I think that now is the time to strike. Also, if GWB is smart and Frist is tactical, NOW is the time to strike on those judges in the Senate....and so on. Let's hit em hard at every turn. Make the head of the left spin. Yahhh!!!!
Excellent article. We should call him "Der Panzerpope". He has God given moral courage. His views give a lot of moral clarity and are Christian mainstream which conservative Protestants and Evangelicals hold dear as well. He will be a formidable unifying voice for Christian conservatives everywhere and can do much to make the mystical Body of Christ the force it needs to be to combat evil. Its already starting as many people in my office are Protestants and Evangelicals and they are absolutely delighted with his election.

I don't know what Pope Benedict's intentions are with his name.
My sense is not that he's a moderate, in the sense of trying to get along with all parties, but rather that he's a moderate, in that he will guide the Church down the true center line of following the Master, and those who fall to the right or the left will have to adjust their course or be left behind.
As well, I've read that St. Benedict is the patron saint of Europe. I know that Pope Benedict is anxious to reclaim Europe for Christianity.
He has my prayers.

You hit the nail on the head. "Spirit of Vatican II" is indeed the delusion many liberal Catholics have been laboring under for a long time.

In the Boston area there is much controversy about closing of churches and Bernard Law's lack of accounting for his passivity while horrible acts were being perpetrated by priests. In my view--not shared by my friend--this is a lot more emotional and political than it is about the nature of the church. I mean, these reasons for wanting to leave are not new, shocking developments. They seem to have emerged when one's church building was put on the auction block.
I have the ability to stand back from that. While I believe Law should have been prosecuted, he wasn't. But I'm not looking for revenge.
My mom is strongly behind the last pope and was hoping for Ratzinger; my friend's mom, just as old as mine, shares her views.
I am left thinking that in the contemporary church we have people who approve of Vatican II's outreach to other churches in terms of civility, but don't want the CORE of the church touched. Which of course makes me wonder, if V2 was wrong, how did it get past the infallible pope?
And on the other side, there are people who abide by the church as long as it is tailored to their already-existing beliefs. Which seems weird to me. The "new churches" popping up all over the US--yuppies in their drive-through services, not actually drive-through but "softer", let's put it that way--remind me of the liberal streak in Catholicism that supports communism. Nice to see that Ratzinger doesn't seem to care for that wing.
It just seems to me that some people don't quite get the church they're a part of, and would be happier in a more liberal church.
And that is more than enough.
