(I screwed up in my last post by using a "?" instead of a "!") No I don't! Its make believe, and your problem is becoming clearer and clearer to me now. Acting like someone your not is no accomplishment and the fact you regard it so highly is very revealing. Many people fake it every day, and it amazes me that people hold someone who fakes very well in high regard. "You are like so good at stealing, you're like my idol or something". NEVER MIND listening to their (Hollywood) opinions on anything. How do you know they aren't acting again? The medium was a great achievement, how its been used is not. And as one last little side bar, actors didn't invent their profession, neither did the directors, and neither did the producers so I'd stop giving them credit if I were you.

Ad hominem remarks dopn't advance an argument.

You can't judge people living in the 1000's by contemporary standards of morality.

The Crusaders were no worse than their adversaries and frequnetly a lot more noble.

According to the (Catholic Encyclopedia Crusades are) : Expeditions undertaken, in fulfilment of a solemn vow, to deliver the Holy Places from Mohammedan tyranny.

LOL. That was the equivalent of the WMD excuse of our day.

I believe the real reason--from the Church's standpoint--may have had more to do with politics:

Rome figured if it controlled the Holy Land, then other Christian religions would appear false, and thereby Roman Catholicism would have a monopoly on Christianity.

And there was no shortage of nobles who saw the Crusades as a chance to add mid-eastern fiefdoms to their domains.

I was definitely being sarcastic but if you'd like to explain how many sides there are to the crusades I'd love to hear it. Oh, and if you could specify which one newgeezer is part of that would be helpful too. I just hate being misguided. :)

All Art is 'make believe'. From painting to writing. I never claimed anyone invented their professions. And what does that have to do with anything? Shakespeare didn't invent his profession either. The medium has been used to create a huge body of work that is the envy of the world. A shame you don't appreciate it.

Roman Catholocism DID have a monopoly on Christianity in Western Europe at the time. The Crusades certainly did reinforce the power of the Papacy, but I'm curious which other Christian religions you are refering to.

What I am saying is that at the time, no one, from a Christian standpoint said anything about what the Crusaders did or even knew what happened except that the crusades were "glorious".


Much the same could be said about the Muslim world these days. If there is a car bombing in Tel Aviv, someone in Saudi or the UAE won't know much about it unless they see it on TV because chances are their Imams will tell about how "Glorious" it was.

It doesnt absolve anyone of any guilt or association to the acts, but the surroundings are simliar.
