Wilbanks Enters Treatment Program
WXIA-TV/DT Atlanta ^ | 5.10.05 | Ian Stinson

Posted on 05/10/2005 9:17:20 AM PDT by mhking

Jennifer Wilbanks, the runaway bride whose disappearance triggered a nationwide search, has entered a voluntary medical treatment program.

According to a statement from the family's church, "Ms. Wilbanks entered a highly regarded, inpatient treatment program on her own volition to address physical and mental issues which, she believes, played a major role in her 'running from herself' as she described in a public statement last week."

Wilbanks entered the program late Monday. The location of the program and suggested duration of treatment was not disclosed.

Wilbanks was already undergoing professional treatment. On May 5, the pastor for the Wilbanks family, Dr. Tom Smiley, read a statement from Jennifer Wilbanks. In the statement, Wilbanks said she, "started professional treatment voluntarily," for the problems that led her to run away.

Dr. Smiley said the treatment was "professional therapy with certified, competent professionals." Smiley did not go into details about the treatment.

Wilbanks, 32, touched off an extensive search in April when she disappeared after leaving her Duluth, Ga., home for a jog just four days before her scheduled wedding.

Wilbanks turned up in Albuquerque, New Mexico. She told police she had been abducted, but she later told authorities she took a bus to Las Vegas and then Albuquerque on her own.

Physical issues could be an eating disorder. She looks borderline anorexic to my eyes.

Oh hells bells, over here there is a treatment program for anything!! Especially if it will get you out of admitting that you were at fault!

She owes the public no explanation. She has apoligized and is seeking treatment. We are intitled to no further info.

She has NOT apologized. Having your minister and lawyer read a statement they wrote apologizing for you is not apologizing. And being that she spent over $100,000 of the publics money on her charade, she clearly owes an explanation, apology, and restitution.

Source other than rumor mill or your fertile mind please.

Her father.

She's been ARRESTED for SHOP LIFTING THREE TIMES!!!

Is THAT reason she required so many bridal showers?

GIFT she didn't have to STEAL?

Throw her in JAIL and demand she make restitution.

Please tell me they're not going to make a "made for TV" film about her - eventually that sort of rubbish does wash up on our shores too.

That wouldn't surprise me one bit. Flava Flav is taken, though. They were able to spin off an entire show about that, even. It'd have to be vern troyer.

My sentiments exactly.

This woman is getting a lot of bad advice from a lot of people -- family, lawyers, pastor included.

We'd say she's "barmy" or a "nutter". "Stark raving mad" is another expression that springs to mind.

One transatlantic expression is to simply call her a loony.

You know very well that between trying to come up with more trite programmes about single women living in some major city and their neuroses, that programme planners for the alphabet networks are going to regard it as a stroke of genius to do a made for TV film about a single woman living in the country and her neuroses.

>Her father.<

Her father has made no such statements. There are unconfirmed reports in the NY Post (theirs a reliable source)that she broke a prevoius engagement.

>And being that she spent over $100,000 of the publics money on her charade<

I am glad you know the amount since the Mayor of Duluth has pegged it at $60,000 and that number is probably exaggerated.

I knew someone like that too, in college. Only in her case, her thyroid was failing completely, not being over-active. One day she was perfectly the normal; the next day at dinner she was raving like a lunatic, convinced that her professors were conspiring against her, all the girls in her classes were lesbians who wanted to seduce her, and saying the most random, incoherent things like "it's OK that I'm telling you this because there are 3 of us at this table. But if there were 5, that would be scrupulous." It was very frightning. I had no idea what was going on - she was a very conservative and devout Catholic, so drug use didn't seem likely. Fortunately she went to the hospital in time, because she actually came very close to death. She had to withdraw from college completely to recover her health and I don't know what happened to her after that.

For all you reading this, if you ever notice a friend or acquaintance acting in such a bizarre manner for no apparent reason at all - please get them to a hospital right away. It could mean the difference between life and death.

The Duluth money does not include the money spent in NM, where she also filed a false rape charge. Which she should also be prosecuted for. And harshly.

The woman should be made to face the music....all we have is some lawyered up statement from her...she oughta get out there, make a public apology, restitution and maybe do some jail time. Sounds to me like she's some spoiled, irresponsible brat who needs some consequences for her action.

Remember Mark Hacking?

Maybe to hide her possible abortion she had in Vegas? Only her gynecologist knows for sure...

Physical issues could be an eating disorder.

You might be right. If she was like some of my anorexic relatives, her main concern would have been all the food that was to be consumed at the wedding reception.

We are led to believe that shop lifting can be a an attention seeking ploy.

Perhaps the fourteen bridesmaids and eight bridal showers had the same purpose.

If it was attention she was after, she succeeded.

The only problem I see is that the whole lot of them have been enabling this grown woman for too long! Maybe a little tough love would have been the answer not treating her like she is a 15 yr old who doesn't get what she has done-like saying she didn't realize so many would be searching for her? Is she really that stupid? Thank God no kids were produced by this blithering idiot. Quit coddling her and let her take her lumps as should have been done with the first arrest not let it get this far at her age!

She has many of the behaviors and symptoms....and the worst thing would be to be living under a roof with someone who notices your eating habits.

I hope her and her family and all involved will be ok, and able to look back and relize she made mistakes, but no one was killed, harmed or hurt phyisically. She is not a villian.... some need to consider that she was in an emotional twit to do such actions.

Ya, no cultish baptist churches out there.

Other than maybe the one a former friend got sucked into.

He is a former friend because he was forbidden to associate with "non believers" and had a fondness of telling my wife she is going to hell because she is jewish and I for marrying her.

But your right, no cultish baptists out there.

Bulimia would explain the somewhat odd "likes to eat" comment.

http://www.ajc.com/metro/content/metro/gwinnett/0505/08bride.html

The aunt asked Jennifer if it was OK to pass along Jennifer's phone number to the runner, a Duluth guy named John Mason. Sure, Jennifer said.

Mason called her. Not long afterward, the two went on their first date. Things clicked.

"He said, 'She likes football, she likes to eat and she's a Georgia Dogs fan,' '' said Melinda Larson, a member of Mason's running club. The relationship, Larson said, exuded "positive energy."
