Police found a so-called "skirt cam" under a subway grate at 88th Street and Lexington Avenue Tuesday afternoon after a woman called police saying she had noticed suspicious wires protruding from the grate as she passed by.
Police closed off the street, fearing the device was a bomb, but soon realized that it was a four-inch multi-media video camera that was pointing upward and recording passers-by.
The camera was attached to an external hard-drive, making it possible for the video to be saved and then uploaded onto the Internet.
Investigators do not consider the camera to be a threat to public safety, but they do consider it a threat to individual privacy.
Some passersby in the neighborhood who spoke to NY1 said they would think twice before ever walking over a grate again.
"It's pretty awful. It really is. I think that I walk over that every single day, but she actually wears skirts more than I do," said one woman, referring to another woman with her. "I happen to have one on today. I'm so glad that I was wearing pants [the rest of the time.]"
"It's really weird that people would actually do this," said a young girl. "I think it's disgusting."
"I generally don't walk on grates," said another woman, who added that she definitely won't be walking over grates from now on.
Police sources say investigators are looking into the possibility the camera was installed by MTA workers.
The California company that manufactures the camera says it will work with police to trace the serial number back to its owner.
A few years ago, Governor George Pataki signed a law making "video voyeurism" a felony offense in New York State, meaning the person responsible for installing the camera could face up to seven years in prison if convicted.
Seems to me like a terrible waste of time and money. 75% of women wear slacks or jeans these days, most of the ones who wear skirts wear panty hose which is about as exciting as looking at slacks. The ones they actually see with bare legs cant see much more than legs, its kinda dark where the goodies are, That means about 1% of the camera shots being only half decent.
Bring back non air conditioned cars and flared skirts and women wearing garters and nylons and I will drive my big rig next to them anyday and pass on the upskirt cameras.
What an idiot!
Yeah, but they actually WANT you to look at them. A little different from someone's daughter/sister/mother wearing a skirt out in public.
No argument there. Guys with "upskirt" cams need a broken nose for their efforts. Not that I'm advocating violence though.
Perhaps one of the reasons some women wear slacks or jeans is because that way they don't have to worry about men trying to get a peek at their privates.
Heh, of course not--I didn't get the impression that you would advocate violence OR peeping toms. And I can appreciate a man wanting to look at women other than his wife, and frankly your post was kinda cute. I think I'm reacting to the fact that I equate "conservative man" with "gentleman," and sometimes men post things on this board that aren't at all gentlemanly. I have to assume that that's NOT how they act in the real world.
(I also think that as my nieces get older I get more sensitive about these things.) :-)
Do ya'll think Helen Thomas ever walked over that grate?
Like the old guy told me once, when his daughter was young and would bring a date home, he would be seated at his table cleaning his guns and knives.
I bet he was grateful it wasn't discovered sooner!
I saw an article about some Norwegians that were fired for viewing porn at work. They sued and won. I'd bet some MTA worker of Norwegian desent is " behind " this.
Using that same logic it could be that some women wear skirts so men can look at their privates.
Voyeur's are a weird lot ~ yep, there'll be a tax added tomorrow, especially in NYC. :)
What happened to good old fashioned shoe mirrors?
How did she know it was a skirt cam??? I think it's disgusting how people assume the worst.
