Senate To Pursue Gun Ownership Law for D.C.
Wednesday May 18, 2005 5:36pm
Some Senate Republicans are preparing to launch an assault on the District's gun laws.
Senators Kay Bailey Hutchison and John Cronyn of Texas and George Allen of Virginia are signing on as sponsors of the District of Columbia Personal Protection Act of 2005.
The measure would repeal the District's prohibition against most private handgun ownership. It's similar to a measure with 123 co-sponsors in the House.
Supporters of the measure say the legislation will restore the Second Amendment rights of District residents guaranteed by the Constitution.
District business leaders joined the city's elected officials last May to help turn back similar legislation. They cited D.C.'s high homicide rate and problems with youth violence in opposing the measure.

The only problem with this is that Congress had no Constitutional authority to ban guns in DC in the first place!

That's funny, it's why i support the measure. DC's socialist experiment has failed on every socialist touching point. Education, safety, and the welfare programs. The council has more important things to talk about such as bringing baseball to DC and getting a vote in congress.

District business leaders joined the city's elected officials last May to help turn back similar legislation. They cited D.C.'s high homicide rate and problems with youth violence in opposing the measure. These folks are misinformed, or they are afraid that the new measures will actually reduce crime in the District, thereby dismantling their cherished worldview regarding citizens possession and use of arms.

The problem with this -- and it is a huge problem, really -- is: it reduces the Second Amendment to a favor given to us by a benevolent government -- like a parent giving a bicycle to a child. The Second Amendment delineates a RIGHT given by God, or the Creator -- and does nothing but PROHIBIT GOVERNMENT FROM INFRINGING UPON IT. THE DISTINCTION IS EVERYTHING.

Agreed. That's why I encourage citizens to disregard unconstitutional laws, although I also encourage them to do it DISCREETLY.

And two things that really get me are -- THEY are the legislators -- THEY are the ones who should know this. Are they that ignorant or do they just think we are stupid?
And of course the really big one is: Why should I trust a goverment that does not trust me?

Congress didn't ban guns in DC. The city council and mayor did.
