Viacom's Showtime Slanders Mother Teresa
NewsMax ^ | 5/25/05 | Carl Limbacher

Posted on 05/25/2005 4:57:31 PM PDT by wagglebee

When shareholders of media conglomerate Viacom show up for their annual meeting tomorrow, they'll face the wrath of Catholic League President Dr. William Donahue over a shocking Showtime episode that slandered the late Mother Teresa and her order of nuns in the vilest of terms.

According to Donahue, who plans a press conference in front of the hotel in New York City where the Viacom meeting is being held, an episode of Showtime's Penn and Teller show "Holier Than Thou” was a "Nazi-like assault on Catholicism, and on the person the show calls "Mother F***ing Teresa.” Showtime is owned by Viacom.

Stormed Donahue, "In the 12 years that I have been president of the Catholic League, I have never witnessed a more vicious attack on Catholicism than what appeared this week on the Showtime program, ‘Penn and Teller.’ The episode, ‘Holier Than Thou,’ was a frontal assault on Mother Teresa and her order of nuns, Missionaries of Charity (as well as Gandhi and the Dali Lama).

"Like most Americans, I like parodies and have no problem, per se, with irreverent humor. But when humor becomes insult, that is a different story. And that is what happens here: comedy quickly morphs to vitriol. Indeed, as the show progresses, the level of anger becomes palpable and the degree of distortion becomes mindboggling. This is no comedy—it is Nazi propaganda right out of the Leni Riefenstahl school of filmmaking.

"The Mother Teresa that the world has come to love and revere is made to look like a cruel, exploitative, self-serving nun who ripped off the poor. We are told that Mother Teresa intentionally let the poor suffer, providing neither beds nor bathroom facilities. ‘She had the f***ing coin and pissed it away on nunneries,’ says Penn. As for the nuns who worked with Mother Teresa, they are referred to as ‘f***ing c***s.’

"It does not bother me when they call me ‘Catholic Boy’ on the show (though the term ‘Jew Boy’ would never cross their lips), nor does it concern me when they talk about ‘f**ers like Bill Donohue [who] only see good in her.’ But when they mock the Catholic Church’s teaching on the meaning of suffering, and when they say of the poor that ‘They had to suffer so that Mother F***ing Teresa could be enlightened,’ then they are behaving like monsters.

"We will mail a tape of select portions of this broadcast to many interested parties, including the bishops. And we will hold a press conference tomorrow outside the hotel where Viacom is holding its annual stockholders meeting. They haven’t heard the end of this yet.”

Donohue, who will be joined by some Catholic League staff members, said he will answer any questions following a few remarks. He promised that copies the Catholic League news release on this subject, "Mother F***ing Teresa—Courtesy of Viacom,” will be distributed to Viacom shareholders as they enter the hotel.

You're young and relatively new at Free Republic, so as someone who is neither, here's a tip: if you don't want to be treated as if you are a liberal troll, don't act like one. Trolls do the hit-and-run insults. You shouldn't. You have infinite cyberspace to outline your charges against her "dictator friends." You should use it, unless you're just talking out of your posterior.

If you just want to spit on people's religious beliefs apropos of nothing, maybe FR isn't for you. And maybe you don't belong here.

For the record, I am not a Catholic, and don't believe in saints, beatification, or the infallibility of the Pope. But I save the word "dictator" for people who deserve it.

Yeah, she was an unbalanced nun.

In High School we had a nun that was about 5 years past her prime, she was a bit out of it, sometimes she wore her wig backwards.

But, back then, they just stuck nuns and priests into schools without any background, like I said, we had 2 pedophiles who are in prison still, from my grade school.

Ya know what, its personal taste, I love South Park, I like Penn & Teller's show, and I hate about 80% of the rest of the dreck out there, such is life, I'm not calling on the networks to take down stupid TV, just not watching it personally.

Pretty easy.

Yeah, one picked up hitchhikers and filmed sex, he's been in for over 12 years now, another had a cabin and invited kids up, I think he may be on parole.

Another one, at a different parrish suddenly left his parrish, moved back east and died, he had some complaints against him, not sure if it was pedopheliac or with women.

Kinda sours you on the whole thing, I go to mass every once in awhile, but I see people praising the symbols and devoting themselves to the symbolic things, and when they leave the church, they are the same jerks that they were when they went in. You can do the stand up sitdown kneel stuff, but if you don't practice any of it (which I have seen in all religions), then the hour a week you spend at mass is just a sham.

Yes, one is always left wondering, was that just funny or just a bit mean? Sometimes 'mean' can be lighthearted and hysterical. But sometimes it's just sad and mean, bitter even, and that's how Stuart comes off. I've never cared for Stuart Smalley, even before I knew Franken was such a DUmmie. ;-)

Lauralee's About Me explains her views on Christianity. ::rolls eyes::

I'm Lauralee, I'm 18, I'm not part of the Christian Right, I've never touched a gun, and I live in Left Wing Liberal New York.

LOL! Nevermind...

So they should stop going to mass? The Church is a hospital for sinners.

She may have started many convents, but they did not live the high life. Simple saris, donated buildings, often in deep disrepair.

One person's experience with the Missionaries of Charity in the US.

My 10-year-old daughter has expressed interest in joining the order. I know it's a long way off, but I'm proud of her intention at least.

Let me ask you, little Miss Deist, how many poor have YOU cared for? When did YOU give up everything and dedicate your life to caring for others? Hmmmm...? I'm waiting... I thought so.

This attack on Mother Theresa and the Church probably relates to the ongoing

feud  between Bill Donohue  and  Hollywood secular Jews  (in Donohue’s own

words).   Strange how this thread has been perverted to a pseudo-dialogue with

a pseudo “18 year old”.  Consider  who you’re really talking to here…..

And you are not judging people? These clowns are not pandering to an audience that would not be unhappy if the faith you profess were suppressed? IAC, learn the difference between limbo and purgatory.

That is the rule, but it can and has been waved. Pius XI waived it for Thomas More, because, as he said, he wanted each man to know what was expected of each Christian involved in political life.

Penn & Teller would never mock Islam, because it could get them killed. But Catholics, Evangelicals and Orthodox Jews are fair game.
And that's hypocritical Bull**it.

No; it's a factual error -- see Msg#19.

One is led to wonder how many Calcutta orphans have been fed, clothed, and sheltered by Penn & Teller...
