Viacom's Showtime Slanders Mother Teresa
NewsMax ^ | 5/25/05 | Carl Limbacher

Posted on 05/25/2005 4:57:31 PM PDT by wagglebee

When shareholders of media conglomerate Viacom show up for their annual meeting tomorrow, they'll face the wrath of Catholic League President Dr. William Donahue over a shocking Showtime episode that slandered the late Mother Teresa and her order of nuns in the vilest of terms.

According to Donahue, who plans a press conference in front of the hotel in New York City where the Viacom meeting is being held, an episode of Showtime's Penn and Teller show "Holier Than Thou” was a "Nazi-like assault on Catholicism, and on the person the show calls "Mother F***ing Teresa.” Showtime is owned by Viacom.

Stormed Donahue, "In the 12 years that I have been president of the Catholic League, I have never witnessed a more vicious attack on Catholicism than what appeared this week on the Showtime program, ‘Penn and Teller.’ The episode, ‘Holier Than Thou,’ was a frontal assault on Mother Teresa and her order of nuns, Missionaries of Charity (as well as Gandhi and the Dali Lama).

"Like most Americans, I like parodies and have no problem, per se, with irreverent humor. But when humor becomes insult, that is a different story. And that is what happens here: comedy quickly morphs to vitriol. Indeed, as the show progresses, the level of anger becomes palpable and the degree of distortion becomes mindboggling. This is no comedy—it is Nazi propaganda right out of the Leni Riefenstahl school of filmmaking.

"The Mother Teresa that the world has come to love and revere is made to look like a cruel, exploitative, self-serving nun who ripped off the poor. We are told that Mother Teresa intentionally let the poor suffer, providing neither beds nor bathroom facilities. ‘She had the f***ing coin and pissed it away on nunneries,’ says Penn. As for the nuns who worked with Mother Teresa, they are referred to as ‘f***ing c***s.’

"It does not bother me when they call me ‘Catholic Boy’ on the show (though the term ‘Jew Boy’ would never cross their lips), nor does it concern me when they talk about ‘f**ers like Bill Donohue [who] only see good in her.’ But when they mock the Catholic Church’s teaching on the meaning of suffering, and when they say of the poor that ‘They had to suffer so that Mother F***ing Teresa could be enlightened,’ then they are behaving like monsters.

"We will mail a tape of select portions of this broadcast to many interested parties, including the bishops. And we will hold a press conference tomorrow outside the hotel where Viacom is holding its annual stockholders meeting. They haven’t heard the end of this yet.”

Donohue, who will be joined by some Catholic League staff members, said he will answer any questions following a few remarks. He promised that copies the Catholic League news release on this subject, "Mother F***ing Teresa—Courtesy of Viacom,” will be distributed to Viacom shareholders as they enter the hotel.

I'm in no way equating Mother Teresa to Osama Bin Ladden.

She's absolutely over rated. There are many more people who have done even better things but didn't get a documentary made about them. The only reason she's well known is because of the 1969 documentary "Something Beautiful for God."

Yeah. I am a Deist. I believe in right and wrong through reason.

Isn't this what we call the 'tyranny of relativism'? As if right and wrong are products of human thought. 'Right and wrong' to an Islamist terrorist butcher would be just as valid as 'right and wrong' to, say...., Mother Theresa. Therefore and ergo, 'right and wrong' are at the same time contradictory, complementary, and synonymous - QED!

I understand there is some conflict as to who Mother Theresa accepted money from and true, she was not "perfect" but she did what I never would have accepted a calling to do. She was not a political person and did what she could, which is so much more than I would do. She did much good and gave out a spiritual message of giving and caring. Moreover, she never thought of herself as holier than thou which I admire in her.

She was a very devout Catholic yet never pressured anyone to accept her beliefs. She would say to someone," You pray your Hindu prayer while I sit here and pray with you with my Christian prayer." That is pretty spiritual in my book.

I am Anglo-Catholic rather than Catholic, but ya know they can say anything they'd like about "Saint Teresa" and it doesn't make a hill of beans. Mother Teresa is now in heaven with the other Saints, Angels, Archangels and all the company of heaven, in the presence of the Almighty Father and Jesus. Let'em go on, who cares. If your a child of God, you'd know that this is supposed to happen. The WORLD will persecute you, slander you, and put you to death for your faith. Glory be to God.

Anyone who wants to call Mother Teresa "overrated" should walk a day in her shoes first.

Mother Theresa was a sham and no saint. She never performed any miracles. Her and her dictator friends.

Mother Teresa devoted her life to the poor, selflessly subjecting herself to a life of poverty.
You've no idea what you're talking about.

Out of curiosity though, name some of these "dictator friends" of hers.

"" Can you be certain the money was stolen? ""

Yep and she knew it too.

""Did she claim to have performed miracles?""

People pushing for her sainthood claimed it.

""Why did JPII think so highly of her and take steps to canonize her if she was a "sham"?""

I think because the pope is the number one diplomat for the Catholic church.

Who are the dictators in her life?

""enver Hoxha""

If she wasn't "that bad" what did she do that was "somewhat" bad?

Taking Stolen money and praising enver Hoxha.

""As you claim to not to be a Christian, what then do you consider a saint?""

I think there are certain things and odd happenings that may or may not be- but still remain uncertain. And I don't believe them- but I still think them strange. Uncorrupted bodies (of course Lenins body is also uncorrupted) But when you have a handful of people who say that this one individual cured them and bleeding statues and certain unexplainable things- I think that leaves room for Sainthood.

Very good point Texas Gal. Mother Teresa did more for the poor and the people she came in contact with than any other person on the planet.

""Okay so in your opinion who are examples of well known people who are more worthwhile and saintly than Mother Theresa ?""

Christian people? And Saintly as in more religiouse or good doing or should be beautified and made an actual Saint. More specific. And I'd like to hear your thoughts on Mother Theresa.

Oh c'mon...everyone knows that Penn Jilette is a nasty athiest and Christianity-hater. However other episodes viciously skewered and debunked environmentalists, global warming, recycling and the animal rights wackos. Those episodes are must-see tv. The rest are to be skipped.
