I lived in Manhattan 8 years.

It's usually for the work.

The slum dwellers may be stuck.

Some folks like the culture.

Some like their neighborhood and simply stay.

New York is what it is because it's always been a gateway to the US and has grown off that.

I think it's fun for awhile ...maybe to age 40...but it's hard for anyone with a large family unless they are truly rich to live in the nice cultural part and benefit from it.

And oddly, I have known Manhattanites scared to venture out into flyoverland.

Course, you have rural folks who loathe the city too.

One thing is not debatble. Folks are friendlier in Mississippi and more polite. And yes that includes the black 40% of the state.

Mississippi folks have to be the nicest folks on earth. I saw proof of that right away.

As an aside, did you see the pic of WKB's house? Not a swamp in sight.

I do not dispute what you have stated.

There are some people in Manhattan scared to venture to New Jersey lol.

In terms of large families you would really have to be well healed to live well.

There are some people which does love that fact of some things being open all night, the incredible diversity of food, theater, music, museums, high rise views, the history, the pulse of the city like no other in the world, etc.

It's obvious on either end of the spectrum when speaking in terms of urban or country living, it's in the blood for one to really long for one or the other.

Yes....the levels of what one could call "high culture" in the arts is unrivaled by anywhere in the world

When I used to fly in and land and take a cab over the Tri-Boro or 59th street bridge I'd always marvel at being somehow at the center of the universe...home at the time...never thought I'd live anywhere else. lol....the whims of a 25 year old being what they are.

My parents recently had to sell an antebellum house in Natchez that had been in my family for over 100 years -- Mississippi people are indeed the friendliest people imaginable and they need tourists, so y'all go visit! Natchez is especially pretty in the springtime.

Didn't see this until today Yosemitest. Thanks for the heads up on the book. I'll check it out. Looks like it might be similar to "The Education of Little Tree". I like stories that are set in rural areas, especially if they are true to life.

I grew up in Natchez,MS. I have fond memories of the place. My mother and brother still lives there. I agree with Jay about the nice people who live there. Its nice to here someone in show business say something nice about the state.

I'm sorry M.E., but it's hard for me to even comprehend why anyone would stay within 100 miles of that place. Yeah, I've been there a couple of times and I was near to panic the whole time. To me, that picture looks as close to Hell as you can get. A choice of ethnic food and theaters does not somehow compensate for bars on every window, not being able to safely walk down a street without getting mugged, and having your car stripped within five minutes of parking it, not to mention being the target for every terrorist on the earth. I'm happy for you if you enjoy living there. I guess you're right; it has to be in the blood.

I understand where you are coming from since you did not grow up in the city. I get nervous in the country if it's more than a weekend. It's like slow motion. In terms of those terrorist bastards, cutting & running only gives those savages a propaganda victory.

It that vast towering skyline, the feeling, it does the very same to me, no matter how many times I see it. Montreal, Boston and Chicago have a similar feeling but not near as great.)
