I was wrong, you aren't a liberal, you are a marxist.

Oh my! Once I am compared to Mr. Schicklgruber, next to Karl Marx. I guess pointing to the freemarketeers that the Earth is round drives them nuts!

All for insulting your false idol of the market.

A: None. If the light bulb needed changing, the market would have already done it.

When you talk like a socialist, expect people to disagree with the garbage you espouse.

Wait a minute, how did they conclude that Walmart's wages and benefits were "inadequate"?

Probably because their starting wage isn't equal to or greater than the salaries of the C.E.O.'s of I.B.M. or G.E. ;-(

It is amusing when the freemarketeers are raving and foaming.

Wanting a living wage for every person who is willing and able to work full-time in our country a socialist does not make me.

We are already a two-tiered, possibly multi-tiered, overlapping-tiered socialist country whether you like it or not. Even wealthy people collect social security checks. That is socialism is it not?

I'm the one who does not want government help in any way, shape or form if it is possible to pay my own way. I do not want to move to a socialist or communist country, as some of you would have me do, although several years ago I sent for papers for residence in Canada and not want to give up my American citizenship. They take in third-world people, but they just don't let Americans in without a lot of paperwork and waiting. It's worse for England unless you are a Muslim. If you are an American and you want to live in England, you either have to prove that you have a job waiting or that you have sufficient income to support yourself or they won't let you stay. Maybe they've changed. That was 20 years or so ago.

At the time, I didn't understand just how socialistic Canada and England had become.

I cannot think of one capitalistic country on the planet where it is possible to live a decent life if you aren't solid middle class or rich and take *no* government assistance from cradle to grave unless you are a rich American, Amish or other similar types. Even they have some kind of group medical insurance which is another form of socialism or medical lottery, for profit where money is taken from those who use less or none to pay for those who use more.

If we're sadists you are a masochist - and a racist one to boot.

I'm only a masochist if I enjoy being called sicko, insane, bolshie, commie, liberal, can't remember all the names which I do not. Few people enjoy that sort of thing. Some manage to get used to it and ignore it, not give up, not be a quitter.

Sometimes a person has to step up to the plate and speak up for what they believe is right and just.

As to the racist part, I only brought that up because I was thinking of a minority friend who lost her $16 an hour job 30 miles away because they cut and ran and now has to do lesser paying work assembling radio antennas for cars and had to move back home with mom. She had a little house all her own on the $16 per hour job few of you here would ever consider living in but she could afford the payments on it. The foundation went bad and it was condemned. If you come back and say she was too stupid for buying a house like that and deserves what she got, I'll won't call you any names, but I won't talk to you. The government may have helped her get the loan for the house. I don't know.

I paid her mother's sewer bill which had accumulated three months and went onto her home as a tax lien. Her house was sold for back taxes and it was touch and go until her daughter whose husband is serving in the military loaned her the money to bail her out and redeem her house which she own(s) free and clear because her step-father left it to her when he died. The only reason she is able to stay in it now is she found through word-of-mouth another government local program that exempts poor people from paying property taxes, more socialism btw. I do not begrudge her the help. I suppose some of you would. She has never been able to work because uh she never could do well enough in school or remedial programs. Next time I see her, I'll ask her nicely if she ever *wanted* a job.

So I don't think that makes me a racist.

Doesn't mean I want it that way. Apparently you're fine with it, and you want even more government control without understanding the consequences of what you're demanding.

You think people should go to all the trouble of starting their own businesses and end up with less of a profit "just because." You fail to understand that if there is less of a reward (profit) fewer people with take the risk. Because it is a risk. A lot of people starting out their own businesses will give themselves MUCH LESS than what you consider a "living wage" for several years before they are profitable to hire ANYONE. And that's if they succeed. At least 80% of all new businesses fail. It takes a lot of hard work to get in the business of employing people. If it becomes less profitable, fewer people will do it. And that means fewer jobs for everyone. Try to think about it from the employer for a bit. Imagine a Mom and Pop employer if you like.

"Wanting a living wage for every person who is willing and able to work full-time in our country a socialist does not make me."

What are those things that a person buys with a "living wage?"

A house, car, TV, college education for the kids? Sorry, but those things are luxuries, even though they have come to be thought of as necessities. Also, "willing and able to work" doesn't buy anyone into the game anymore. You have to bring something else to the table, like a skill or being the son/daughter of a company's founder.

Most people who start small businesses afford their employees some kind of group health insurance. In times past, they paid their male workers enough money to support their families in a lot of cases unless they were total scrooges. Today that is far more difficult, but if I owned a business and jetted off to Cancun while my employees were back home doing my slop work and never able to take a vacation eqivalent to mine, I would feel guilty. Some of these people do not have the money to go home when their aging parents are sick and dying. I would have a hard time as an employer watching that.

As to wanting it that way; i.e., socialist, liberalism, communism, fascism, I do not. I prefer not to have any government-assistance programs, inluding federal payments to schools. I told you what I wanted. Wal Marts who pay a living wage without unions and employees who get health plans and prompt compensation for non-faked injuries on the job.

As for myself, I do have mental health problems and get help paying for treatment which makes me feel shame but not crazy. I have to pay for all the medication myself except the portion my expensive medical insurance pays.

I qualify for SSI but have never taken it because I would have to spend down any assets I have first. I prefer to keep my assets as that makes me feel a little better about myself but not much. As to pulling myself up by the bootstraps, I am 63 years old, so it is a little late for that, but I'm still working on some ideas to make me feel more like a contributing member of society and not a useless eater.

So you think only a certain strata of citizens deserves those things in our society? I'm talking about basis subsistence here, not houses, tv's or college. People need at least a small rental apartment, second-hand cars or carpool, sharing expenses, to get to work . Every time Wal Mart moves, the busses move, but they don't run at night or on weekends.

And what is wrong with Haliburton? Specifics please, no re-hash of blah-blah-blah-Haliburton. I'd like to know what part of the FARs they intentionally violated.

Wal-Mart is another of the lefts whipping boys. The blame for everything evil in the world. It was a very good comparison.

Whether they deserve them or not is beyond the point. Mother Theresa probably deserved free cable television and a new Mercedes every year. Deserved is a concept that is entirely and utterly beyond the point. You look for a semblance of "fair" where none exists. Despite advertisements to the contrary on television, it's very much an adult world. Go up to the next guy you see in a wheelchair and ask him if he thinks life is fair.

Keeping that in mind -- people are paid according to their skill set. The more common and easily learned the skill sets pay the lowest salaries.

Let me modify it a little. If you could have a vacation in Cancun without private jet or a yacht, but enabling your emplyoyees to have some modest vacation, would you make this sacrifice? If you did not, would you feel guilty?
