BEIRUT, Lebanon, May 30 (UPI) -- The al-Qaida network is reportedly threatening terrorist attacks in Libya if it fails to release imprisoned followers, an Islamic Web site said Monday.

The site, monitored in Beirut, carried a statement signed by Abu Baraa' al-Libi, presumed leader of al-Qaida in the North African Arab country.

"We salute the struggling Libyan people and inform you that our Jihadist operations will begin soon against the tyrant's forces in the city of Darna," the statement said.

It also threatened to "cut off the heads of atheists" and vowed "not to settle for less than the release of our leaders and followers held in Libyan prisons."

The statement, which could not be authenticated, did not say how many al-Qaida followers were imprisoned in Libya.

It doesn't seem wise to threaten a government that doesn't have to play by "the rules".

Turn them loose so the mad dogs can go out and bite others? They should just behead them, but with Kadafi in power, he may just do that to spite them.

al-Quieda wants their old training grounds back.

I'm pretty sure old Quaddie isn't interested in letting them back in. He remembers the last time he pissed off an American President of the caliber we have in office now. He still has nightmares of the F-111s and naval strike fighters screaming over Tripoli.

Al-Qaida threatening the Kadafi regime is similar to Virgil Sollozzo threatening the Corleone family. I think the outcome will be the same.

AQ threats were part of the reason Kadaffi decided to come clean on WMDs and play ball with us terrorists.

AQ threats were part of the reason Kadaffi decided to come clean on WMDs and play ball with us terrorists.

You're right it was fear that caused Kadaffi to come clean but it wasn't fear of AQ, it was fear of a far greater power: the U.S. military and a chief executive with the will to take out state sponsored terrorists like Sadam.

This fear also lead Syria to get the hell out of Lebanon instead of cracking down on the protesters there.
