Aliens could be deported (11 illegals snagged in traffic stop)
Scranton Times-Tribune ^ | 6/3/2005 | JAMES HAGGERTY

A traffic stop for speeding in Dunmore on Wednesday may result in the deportation of 11 alleged illegal aliens from Indonesia.

Although state police indicated initially the case may involve human smuggling, federal immigration officials have ruled it out.

The incident began when state police from Dunmore stopped a van for speeding at 4 p.m. in the westbound lanes of Interstate 84 near the Tigue Street exit. Police said Eko Safi'i, 832 Hemlock St., who was transporting nine female Indonesians, handed over a fraudulent New Jersey license and a false Indonesian passport.

The unidentified females in the van could not speak English, so state police contacted the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility at the Pike County Prison near Lords Valley. An agency interpreter determined all 10 in the vehicle were in the country illegally, police said.

Mr. Safi'i contacted the owner of the van, Turiman Kusweandono, of 402 Prospect Ave., who came to the scene and it was determined he was also an illegal alien, police said.

All 11 were being processed Thursday at a federal detention facility in Philadelphia.

It appeared the 10 people in the van were traveling from the Poconos to Dunmore at the time of the traffic stop, an agency spokesman said.

"I understand they were attending some sort of party or event in the Poconos," Manny Van Pelt said. "I understand all the women resided at a single residence in Dunmore."

A state police report said human smuggling was suspected, but federal investigators found otherwise.

"It's definitely not a human smuggling case but it is a case where aliens are attempting to exploit the immigration system," Mr. Van Pelt said.

All 11 people had overstayed the limits on their visas, Mr. Van Pelt said.

Mr. Safi'i will be charged with transporting illegal aliens, a federal felony, and other charges are possible, Mr. Van Pelt said.

Deportation proceedings against all 11 will be initiated, Mr. Van Pelt said, adding, "The investigation into this matter is ongoing."

There are more than 8 million illegal aliens in the United States and more than 1 million are going through court proceedings, Mr. Van Pelt said.

State police were conducting criminal history and background checks on the people in the van, but didn't expect the investigation to go beyond the traffic incident, said Trooper Bill Satkowski, a spokesman in Dunmore.

Indonesians as illegal migrants in the US? Australia is just next door and why didn't they try there?

Ping!

It doesn't matter whether they said "may" or "will." These folks were no doubt, arrested and processed and then released on their own recognizance. They will show up at their deportation hearings...

NOT.

"Indonesians as illegal migrants in the US? Australia is just next door and why didn't they try there?"

Could it be because we have a horrible reputation for locking illegals up in detention camps located in isolated areas?

horrible reputation

I personally think it is actually a rather great reputation. The Australian government has made a commitment to the rule of their popular immigration laws. I wish our government would do the same. I think we should just start deporting all these illegals to Guantanamo Bay. We should not lock them up though. Just kick them off the boat and let them fend for themselves.

I know the US Democrats will faint when you mention "immigration" and "Australia" to them.

It is plain to me that Fred is using "horrible" with irony in the suage. IMHO he (and I as well) agree that the detention policy is sensible.

Fainting Democrats? Isn't that too good for them? I would prefer something more permanent...

How about we post a large portrait of Winston Peters next to Pat Buchanan? Underneath the photos post this caption: "Both share similar policy platforms on immigration. One got 0.5% of votes in the 2000 US Presidential election, and the other got 18% of votes in the 1996 New Zealand general election, and subsequently became the Deputy Prime Minister of New Zealand."

With this, I predict we can induce heart attacks among Barbara Boxer, Noam Chomsky, Clarence Page, Michael Moore, etc. ;-)

The number of people smugglers in Indonesia making a fortune out of placing people from all over the ME into leaky, rotten or rusty boats and casting them off with vague directions to Ashmore Reef off the coast of Western Australia, had to be stopped. One such ship sank with the loss of over three hundred lives. The Indonesians were making a business of telling simple, uneducated village folk, many from Afghanistan, that the Australians would welcome them with open arms and provide them with welfare and accommodation.

The detention camps exist and are not hidden from the world because they are a message to the unwary and gullible. Don't give your money to an Indonesian people smuggler, to him you are nothing but a commodity. They do not care how many never make it to our shores. And we have no idea how many drowned, how many boats sank on the way.

The 'boat people' as they are called, are literally human trafficking carried out by utterly unscrupulous Indonesians.

Too many unanswered questions here, if it wasn't alien smuggling, what was it? How did they get into the country? As someone else pointed out, why come to America when Australia is closer? Why are we releasing these people when they should be detained and deported?

Did they come into the country on a Visa and over stay, come by ship, or across the border (if so which one). Don't seem to me anyone is taking this situation very seriously.

"I understand all the women resided at a single residence in Dunmore."

In some places this is illegal. Could this be the staff of a whore house?

(Sorry ladies if I've cast false aspersions upon you)

Now, get out!

The story says they all overstayed their visas. The people of the country are taking the matter seriously, it's the federal government that isn't. I'll bet none of these illegals end up being deported anytime soon.
