Americans steadfast in anger at Americans
The Sun News (Myrtle Beach) ^ | Sat, Jun. 11, 2005 | ART BUCHWALD

Milton continued, "Commentators like Bill O'Reilly and Rush Limbaugh told Americans to hate the liberals. It was a sure-fire way of getting ratings."

"I hate O'Reilly and Rush Limbaugh," I said, "because they hate me."

Milton said, "Why does everyone write about how much the world hates America, and no one writes about why Americans hate each other?"

"I was thinking about it," I said. "Why do you think they do?"

"I can't blame it all on President Bush, but the hate factor in the country was raised to a new high when he said it was politically correct to do it."

"How so?"

"Hating fellow Americans didn't become serious until Bush decided to invade Iraq. Then both sides came out of the closet. The conservatives said war was a dandy idea, and the liberals said it was a lousy one. When it was discovered that there were no weapons of mass destruction, which was the reason for going to war, the liberals attacked the president. The conservatives called the anti-war people traitors."

"That was strong language," I told Milton.

"Adding gasoline to the fire were the 'elite' media [the L.A. Times, Washington Post and the New York Times], who editorialized that we got into a lousy war and didn't know how to get out."

Milton continued, "Commentators like Bill O'Reilly and Rush Limbaugh told Americans to hate the liberals. It was a sure-fire way of getting ratings."

"I hate O'Reilly and Rush Limbaugh," I said, "because they hate me."

Milton said, "But what is really tearing the country apart is God. Every group insists they know what God wants for America. People are fighting over the Pledge of Allegiance in the schools, the Ten Commandments on government property and whether Americans came from Adam and Eve or from monkeys."

"I thought we settled that years ago," I said.

"So did most Americans, but the theories kept popping up," Milton told me. "Things really got ugly when the religious right said if you don't believe in Jesus then you are going to hell.

"Evangelicals are now going all over the country asking - no, demanding - that everyone be born again. The worst example is the Air Force Academy, where the cadets are asked to pledge their lives to Jesus. No one knows what blue skies they will fly into once they graduate.

"Everything has a religious background. The right-to-life people are against stem cell research, abortions and condoms. They are for guns, the Second Amendment and the National Rifle Association.

"One of the major issues is same-sex marriage. The right opposes it and the left, who couldn't care less, says, 'Get off my back.'"

I said, "Isn't it now true that members of Congress really hate each other?"

"It's worse than ever."

"I guess they can't pick a judge now without getting mad," I said. "Are all these issues political?"

"No," Milton replied. "They're personal. Americans are not born to hate, but it's taught to them at an early age and once you learn it, you never let it go."

"Tell me this. Do the French hate Americans as much as we hate each other?"

"It's a close call, but we're catching up to them. I could go on and on listing the causes as to why there is so much animosity among Americans, but it won't do anyone much good.

"All I know is, I'm right and they are wrong - and I'm certain they'll go to hell before I do."

The conservatives said war was a dandy idea, and the liberals said it was a lousy one.

The liberals were saying not a word when a Democrat doofus named Clinton bombed the snot out of the Serbians. In my opinion liberals are most certainly not anti-war - they are anti-Republican only.

Dead give away that Art should retire gracefully. The notion that O'Reilly hates anybody is incomprehensible, he is too busy loving himself for such pettiness.

Ha! - I think B.O. comes close to hating Michael Moore --- and maybe a couple of "Rap" dudes.

Milton needs to read the Gospels because that is what Jesus was quoted on, not the "religious right".

" Americans are not born to hate, but it's taught to them at an early age and once you learn it, you never let it go."

So let me get this straight. Rush Limbaugh tells the truth about liberals and their political beliefs, and it is called teaching people to "hate".

I'm not buying this crap. Listen to the Democrat Senate as they vilify any conservative judge, you A-Hole. I don't see anything about that is your stupid column. Creep. Always did hate Bauchwald.

I suppose he's referring to the Scopes monkey trial. What was decided there was that evolution could be taught as a scientific theory in school. I suppose we shouldn't be surprised that the libs think the Supreme Court decided that humans evolved from monkeys and that is the final word on the subject. Idiot. This schizo should keep his conversations with his private parts private.

Can tell you haven't been to church lately. The fire and brimstone guilt trip, that I grew up with doesn't float any more.

I accepted Christ as a teenager. Met my wife and married through the church. Good thing. Guilt, church politics and hypocrites. Bad thing. Up until last year, I had not been to church in about 20 years. But, I was still a Christian.

Through our son, we went to a local church. We care for each other. Our pastor is human, and he has a great sense of humor.

Above all, I have learned that God is love. I'm not saying our life is more perfect now. We still have ups and downs, as everyone does. But, when I listen to my heart, I know what that God is talking to me. And when I listen to my friends, I know they care.

Talking to liberals, and I know from whence they come because I was a Democrat once, I like talking to your kids. They just have their minds made up already. And like our kids, we don't hate them. We just get PO'd because we don't know how to get through to them.

An open mind, on both sides, would help immensely.

"Bill O'Reilly and Rush Limbaugh told Americans to hate the liberals"

THAT IS A BIG FAT LIE!!

In other words, this idiot wants me to believe that WE STARTED THE HATE STUFF. It wasn't us. It really started with the 2000 election - and it was the LEFT WHO STARTED CALLING US NAMES. It had nothing whatsoever to do with O'Reilly or Limbaugh.

They just want a convenient excuse not to be responsible for their actions.

And .. what the hell else is new!

You say, "Hating fellow Americans became serious....oohhhhh...long about 1967, I reckon. And it sure didn't start on the Right."

I only remember becoming aware of "Pubs vs Dems" when Clinton started carrying on about the "right-wing conspiracy." Contrary to what the MSM says, it was not the Bush administration but the Clintons who divided the nation into Pubs against Dems.

I listen to El Rushbo every day and he's never said such a thing. And why in the world would O'Reilly tell people to hate liberals. But the MSM doesn't have a track record of letting facts get in the way.

No, wrong. Finding Weapons of Mass Destruction was NOT the reason for going to war with Iraq.
