It seems Thomas Szasz is not unrelated to Scientology.

LOL--busted!

==Why didn't you say that in the first place, rather than spraying your posts with links to unknown sources?

Thomas Szasz should not be an "unknown" source on this board. He is very famous and highly respected in Conservative, Christian, and Libertarian circles.

Thomas Szasz has been crusading against the theraputic state for years and might be a source for the idea that mental illness is a myth:

His affiliation with that nutbar cult (your nutbar cult?) is extraordinarily relevant here. Your omission of such is an indication of an intent to hide that fact. Why? (he asked rhetorically).

Lisa McPherson wasn't so fortunate with Szasz's Scientology method of psychiatry.

Ever heard of her?

==Were you aware of any relationship between the two when you posted?

I have heard that Tom Cruise has read and agrees with Szasz. Unfortunately, he has destroyed his credibility because of his involvement with Scientology.

Who has destroyed his credibility--Cruise or the very famous and highly respected in Conservative, Christian, and Libertarian circles, Thomas Szasz?

That's too bad. Perhaps he is working with them because they are about the only group willing to do anything about it. Still, I am not at all pleased to hear that.

Scientologists believe the only ones who should be messing with your head are scientologists. Anybody else messing with your head is simply competition.

Behavior modification is also needed to screw your head back on should scientologists get their hooks into you. Can't have that, now can they?

While I absolutely agree that psychiatry has provided relief for many poor souls, I also believe that it has been a destructive force. Psychiatry has extended its bounds from the field of science and medicine to that of socialization. I too am surprised that some can't see this. Heck, the APA (along with the AMA) have recently been flooded with minds who are intent on "changing" or excusing behaviour.

This is the same group that has brought about much of the normalization of homosexual behavior...and is now working to do the same for pedophilia. They've used their license to excuse some of the most abhorant criminal acts in our society...attributing a mental disorder to anything they can't explain. Things like Black Rage or Post-Slavery Disorder are just a few things they've seriously considered.

What I don't like about psychiatry today is that it plays right into the hands of liberals who say no one is responsible for their behaviour...as it looks for scapegoats, either medically or socially. While there are obvious benefits, there are also obvious drawbacks.

Wasn't trying to hide anything. I didn't know about his involvement with scientology until just now. It's too bad, because he has been crusading against psychiatry long before he threw in his lot with the scientologists. Perhaps it because they are the only group doing anything about it. Still, it was a bad move on his part.

I think there are a lot of people that would agree that our culture overprescribes, particularly to children, and that too many things get labeled "mental health" disease to quickly.

Many would agree there are problems in psychiatry and therapy.

However, Scientology is a dangerous group with an evil background.

So to combine the two on the same thread leads to problems.

Szasz worked with the Church of Scientology in 1969 to found CCHR.

Comedians have certainly had a field day with Cruise, a fervent disciple of the Church of Scientology, ever since he scolded Brooke Shields for taking prescribed medication to treat her postpartum depression and lectured Matt Lauer, host of the "Today" show, that psychiatry was a "pseudoscience"

And Scientology is not just as goofed up?

Pot, meet kettle...
