Actually, the ground clearance is the result of the body lift and large tires more than anything else. It shares a *lot* more parts than you think, especially since a lot of the "HUMMER" parts are really renumbered standard GM parts. That's how they get away with saying that "part X is different - see, the numbers don't match!"
Of course, anyone that's looked at an H2 and a Tahoe Z71 4x4 up on racks next to each other knows that GM's lying about that.
"I am sure it will bring the shares up before it is taken over."
Is a takeover in the cards?
Why would anyone want GM, with all that medical liability?
OK, I've got some ideas... You just use it for on road winter driving, not offroading, right?
i've owned nothing but gmc trucks and they have been very reliable. What adds to the fun is knowing that I can smoke any rice grinding toyota out there and laugh all the way down the road. You can have your toyotas.
The dealership owner. He's in the same Jag club I'm in.
Remove any profit from the item you are selling and, gee whiz, a lot of people will swoop in and get it at virtual cost.
"Who'd want GM with their medical liability..."
Maybe that is Ford's idea with being so pro-gay.
Everyone knows that gays live about 30 years less...
Therefore less medical bills to pay!
Um... you haven't seen a Land Cruiser lately, have you?
As for smoking, I believe that the GM C/K 1500s are slower than the Toyota Tundras.
Nope, no mudding..just getting up a slick and icy mountain in the snow...occasionally crossing a muddy creek. But I am not big on bouncing around in the backwoods.
Bad for my back...you know?
Kirk Kerkorian is trying to take it over at $31/share - he wants the GMAC arm (the only profitable one) and he's going to dump/kill/sell off the rest. He's got little to no liability if he does that.
OK, it sounds like you need something that actually has a low range. Unfortunately, you're probably not going to make your fuel economy standard, because you need something with significant torque. I'm also guessing you don't want to pay more than $50K and that you want a new car.
Here are your options as I see them, in no particular order.
Nissan Armada
2006 (early release) Jeep Commander (will be available in a diesel, I think, might just make your fuel economy spec)
Jeep Grand Cherokee (a bit marginal, might be a bit small)
Ford Expedition
Chevy Tahoe/GMC Yukon
Ford Explorer (maybe - same caveat as the Grand Cherokee)
The Envoy is a bit small for you, IMHO.
Forgot one - Dodge Durango.
Hmm
I will consider your recommendations next week when I go looking again. I can tell you however, the Explorer has plenty of head room, but not nearly enough leg room.
I'd like to keep the cost at 40 grand or less,by the way, and a used one would be ok, if it was in good shape and had some sort of a warranty.
Escalades around here are being offered at less than 35K. 2005 models....
Apparently, they can't give them away..
I like the Durango...a lot...
The sheriff's deputies around here run them and they are very durable.
You are right. But then again, it is all in the marketing. Buyers think they are getting a "Hummer" so it makes them feel better. Who should we be to burst their bubble?
Good source, but I heard different from a #2 man in a dealership. Tanks I will need to further check it out.
OK, that narrows it down. You can toss the Envoy, Explorer, Durango, and Grand Cherokee, then. If you're looking for something used, try a certified preowned 00-04 Land Rover Discovery V8 or diesel. They have British Depreciation Disease and they don't have the problems of the Brit cars of old (BMW redesigned and built them during this period). The LR's are pretty lightweight, so you should get nearly your desired fuel mileage out of one - and they have a pretty good preowned warranty program. Another good option would be a used Land Cruiser or Lexus LX450/470. They're the same truck, well tested and proven over many years. They're Toyotas, so you know what that means, and their preowned warranty program is also decent.
Escalades are not on my list because the heavy electronics loads they carry as Cadillacs are prone to repeated and frequent breakdowns.
Something struck me - you could get a different answer than I and we'd both be perfectly correct. GM runs their dealers in "districts" and "regions" which often have different programs or incentives from each other. It may be that whatever department Dallas is in is doing dealer rebates because of the volume or lack thereof that the dealers are doing, where another department/region/whatever doesn't.
Which is just plain stupid, IMHO.
