"But the more important question is, why doesn't the RNC wake up to the fact that most blacks don't care about the NAACP anymore? If he's going to target blacks, why doesn't Mehlman speak before the Assn of Black Accountants? The Black MBAs? The National Bar or National Medical Assn? Speak to people who have a stake in society, not the dregs who depend on the NAACP to perpetuate their victim status."
Even better, how about the NBA,or NFL?

Even better, how about the NBA,or NFL?I'm not much of a sports person. Personally, I feel that a concentration by so many black males on the 1 in a million chance that they will become a basketball or football player leaves little room for pursuing really worthwhile activities such as studying, self improvement and getting a 'real' job. In the scheme of things, there are very few pro-athletes, there are many more doctors, lawyers, accountants, business owners, etc. And these people hold a lot more sway in their communities than sports figures.

If Melhman is apologizing for criticism of busing, then I agree it is wrong for the reasons that you state. I would also add that busing for political purposes in the middle of the 1970s during the energy crisis (rapidly rising fuel prices) and a bad recession was just plain stupid. The cost of all of those buses and the gas/diesel fuel to haul kids unnecessarily long distances was wasteful of precious tax dollars.

Barb and I are great and Oregon is great except for some of the politics.
We're keeping them on their toes as we have a very active pro-gun group here and a pubbie majority in the Oregon House:

Are you aware that President Bush spoke to the Black Expo in Indianapolis this week? This is the first time that a President has spoken to this group in it's 30-some-odd year history.
Black Expo is attended by black business people and professionals, and the President was very well received.
Mehlman almost had to go to the NAACP meeting, because Howard Dean was also speaking. Not going would have been worse than speaking, if you ask me.

...Probably because it makes too much sense. You know the Beltway types aren't too swift in these matters. While this little teacup tempest has been going on, President Bush is addressing the entrepreneurial Indiana Black Expo to a rousing welcome.

That's good to hear.
Besides that Dubya's not much of a Beltway type anyway, thank God.

"Mehlman almost had to go to the NAACP meeting, because Howard Dean was also speaking. Not going would have been worse than speaking, if you ask me."
I was being sarcastic because it would do about as much good for him to address the black hip hoppers of the NBA
as it would to address the PARTISIAN LEFTISTS of the NAALCP.
