WASHINGTON (AP) - A moderate Democratic senator who helped broker a deal over President Bush's judicial nominations said Thursday that Supreme Court nominee John Roberts doesn't seem to be the kind of right-wing candidate they feared the president would select.
Sen. Joseph Lieberman, one of 14 senators who helped avoid a confrontation over judges, said their message to Bush essentially was, "Don't send us an extremist that's going to blow the place up, and first look is that that's exactly what he has not done."
"In other words, he's sent us somebody that's got impressive academic and legal credentials and seems to have a record of personal honor," Lieberman said on the Don Imus radio show.
Lieberman, D-Conn., said his first impression of Roberts, who became a federal appeals court judge in 2003, is that "he's a decent guy." But he said it was too early to reach further conclusions.
"He's only been on the bench for two years...

Lieberman voted to confirm Roberts in 2003. How can this be his FIRST impression???
"Any nominee who is as far to the right as Ginsburg is to the left should not be classified as an extremist."
There really isn't anyone as far to the right as Ginsburg is to the left.
I've been pushing hard to get there, but when you think about it, what *would* be that far right?
A lot of people would immediately think of the Nazis, but they were actually of the left. You might think about the Klan, but those people were Democrats to begin with, and what's either economically or philosophically right-wing about racism and religious bigotry anyway?
Goldwater? I don't think he was ready to trash the Constitution to realize his vision. Nixon? The man who took us off the gold standard and "opened up" Red China?
Reagan? He allowed social spending to expand. I love him and miss him, God rest his soul, but he was by no stretch a right-wing mirror image of the likes of Ginsburg.
Rush Limbaugh? I don't think he would condone lying, voter fraud, or rewriting the Constitution.
I can't think of anybody that comes within parsecs of being as far to the right as your average demonrat is to the left.
"should constantly refer to her as:"
How about "Godless commie heathen fifth-columnist?"
But I like your thinking.
;)
I trust that, after 2004 and having a record of some sanity in the Senate, Mr. Lieberman has about as much chance of appeasing the Dem Base lefties in any future primary as does Heinrich Himmler.
"Blowing up the place" is incendiary rhetoric considering the times we live in. In my op[inion Lieberman is saying that originalists are like terrorists.
"too subtle"
Yeah, I've really got to learn to speak my mind. Maybe some assertiveness training...
I'm with you. Fight fire with fire.
Very good points.
It is shocking really to see how the left has been able, in the last 30 or 40 years, to shift the general populace into believing that leftists are mainstream and the right is "extreme". It has been done both insidiously and purposefully.
You did a good job mentioning the names of past Republicans, but also consider past Democrats and where they would be in the political spectrum today:
Kennedy - Going toe to toe with the Ru-skies in the missile crisis, "ask not what your country...". Yes he had his major faults but by today's standards, he would not be the leftist in the ilk of his drunken sod of a brother.
Humphrey -- He was about as far left as you could be then, but he would align closer today to a "Lieberman" democrat then a Dean.
Johnson -- Yes the great Society places him as an icon of the left and government expansionism. But, as much as he F'd up in Vietnam, at least he was trying to stop the commies. Today's leftists are the commies.
Here, let me see if I can help.
LIBERMAN IS A PHONY AND A HYPOCRITE stop HIS STATEMENT ABOUT LIFE AND CONCEPTION SAYS IT ALL stop HE BELIEVES IN IT BUT HE MUST VOTE THE OTHER WAY stop IMUS CAUGHT HIM AFTER READING A QUOTE FROM SOME JEWISH ARTICLES ASKED HIM HOW COULD HE GO AGAINST THAT stop HE MUMBLED FOR A FEW MINUTES, NO SENSE MADE stop PRIOR TO HIS FIRST ELECTION HE WAS PRO-LIFE stop FOOLED ALL THE VOTERS THEN SWITCHED stop I DON'T TRUST ANY DEM.(<---oops) EVEN THE RED STATE ONES stop THEY WILL VOTE ONLY WHEN IT IS IN THEIR BEST INTEREST pause IE;ELECTION TIME SO THEY WILL NOT BE DEFEATED end of message
Lieberman Probably An Idiot
Nice to know there are some up in the GWN who have their heads on right!
It's a miracle!
Chief Supreme Court Justice Ann Coulter.
She's a woman, AND a hardcore conservative. And hot. Eat your heart out Ruth Bader-Ginsburg.
"Chief Supreme Court Justice Ann Coulter."
Just the thought of the hosing she would give the left...
I guess it's really perverse to get an erotic thrill at the thought of her writing the majority opinion to strike down Roe.
I've learned the hard way that non confrontation and appeasement aren't the road to go. The conservative party here is about as far left as a Demo "moderate"
He's only been on the bench two years because you blocked him for a decade, Joe.
"Johnson -- Yes the great Society places him as an icon of the left and government expansionism. But, as much as he F'd up in Vietnam, at least he was trying to stop the commies. Today's leftists are the commies."
Yeah, but I don't forget that he was unwilling to do what was required to stop the commies in Vietnam, and I think a big part of that was because he was afraid it would interfere with his "Great Society" if he did.
Have you read the essay, "The Day It Became the Longest War," by Lieutenant General Charles G. Cooper, USMC (Ret.)?
I understand your point BUT
When G.W. tried to turn the tables conservatives let out loud squeals.
He attempted to take the word "mainstream", turn it back towards conservative principles. Because in the past that has been used by the Democrats as a code word for Liberals, conservatives were suspicious and in an uproar.
It's one thing to turn negative rhetoric back on the Liberals, but we need to convert positive terms as well to have success. That "mainstream" has become a dirty word as "liberal" has become a dirty word is troubling.
Good of you to keep track of "old Joe".
His veneer of sincerety and semi-trustworthiness and his damning of SCOTUS candidates with patent "faint praise" will get him just where he belongs...
the dead shark tank.
