LAUREN BACALL: 'VULGAR' TOM CRUISE IS NOT A GREAT ACTOR
Drudge Report ^ | 07-31-05 | WestVirginiaRebel

Posted on 07/31/2005 1:30:02 PM PDT by WestVirginiaRebel

NEW YORK-Lauren Bacall tells TIME Tom Cruise is not a great actor. "When you talk about a great actor, you're not thinking about Tom Cruise," Bacall says.

"His whole behavior is so shocking. It's inappropriate and vulgar and absolutely unacceptable to use your private life to sell anything commercially, but I think it's a kind of sickness."

[b]"but she was a worse actor than Tom Cruise"[b]

[p]I'm going to have to agree with you there. Tom Cruise has proven that he can pull off quite diversity of rolls convincingly. [/p]

Don't forget Cary Grant- nee Archibald Leach- who, literally, came from poverty. His dad locked his mom away in an asylum when he was 10 and never told him what happened to her. He finally found out she was alive when he was in his 30s and his dad died. He was a great actor and 100% class-he really was a pretty decent person from everything I've read (which is everything. LOL) I'd take a Cary clone anyday. :)

photoshopped?

Not that I know of. It seemed to be legitimate when I first found it -- unfortunately, I've had it awhile and no idea now where it came from.

Yes, to the big heads that actors have, apparently those big heads make them more photogenic or something.

This photo may just make him look out of proportion because of those big swim fins he's wearing, it may be throwing the perspective off a bit.

Yes, he was short, I think not quite 5'9".

That photo just cracks me up.

I'll stick my neck out here and say that I think Tom Cruise is a pretty darned good actor! Nothing against Lauren Bacall, but she's been in one or two fairly vulgar movies over the past 25 years--e.g., "The Fan."

"FX" ?

The smart ones treat the cast and crew well; they always did. Lots of things can go wrong, even for the biggest STAR, if they act like holy terrors, on a set or stage.

But what can an ordinary citizen do, when Miss/Mrs./Mr. STAR acts like an absolute POS, in public? Not much at all' especially when it's to their reps or product.

Trust me, from the neighborhood bakery ( which was EXCELLENT ! ), to the dress shop, to just about every local store in the vicinity of the Dakota, Lauren Bacall's name was and probably still is mud! And these people dealt with her for decades; not for two weeks on some film set.

Well, most of that's true. :-)

But Cary Grant was terribly insecure and did drugs in his later years.

My point was, that from the earliest times of theatre, actors and actresses were looked down upon and thought of as the scum of the earth; which sadly, most of the were. It's really only within the past 70 years, or so, that actors and actresses have been idolized by the general public.

True, he was insecure (but that's explained by his mother suddenly disappearing) and he did LSD while it was legal as part of psychotherapy in the 50s. And I agree with your point- it used to be a big bad deal to be an actor- have you ever seen The Awful Truth? there's a funny part in that movie with a woman that became an actress but had to change her name due to what her family would say. LOL

She's right. Tom plays the same guy in every single movie he's ever done.

Bacall's right. Cruise is vulgar, or, to put it another way, quite a dummy. But she herself has long been an insufferable snob, trading on Bogart's name for decades. Which is worse, snobs or dummies?

A pox on both their tinsel town houses.

He also did drugs in his old age.

It wasn't just that his mother was institutionalized and he thought that she was dead, but the caste system in England, which colored his personality. And he never did think that his real self was as good as his pretend/movie self. Which kept him humble and more down to earth than some, who believe their own publicity.

Yes, I've seen THE AWFUL TRURTH, but I also know history. :-)

...he (Cary Grant) really was a pretty decent person from everything I've read...

Circa 1978 my sister and her husband traveled back from Europe on a 747 (in the days when they were equipped with a first class lounge) with Cary Grant. He and my sister hit it off for some reason and they talked and joked the whole way. When they landed at Kennedy, Grant had his driver take my sister and brother-in-law home to Long Island, and then he went on to the city. The kindness took him over an hour out of his way.
