It is when it's the middle of summer and you just had an election. Yeah, it is. Talk to some real people, not political junkies. Most people want to FORGET politics as much as possible.

Exactly. I think there is something else important here: it's only a few months after a bitter national eleciton; it's the middle of summer; and most Americans are NOT political and don't want to be bothered with politics all year round, including many "die hards" in both parties.

Pragmatist: Do you comprende what 50.5% means?

TheBigB: Comprendo mucho. What has that number to do with Schmidt's 52% to 48% win?

LOL

"Most people want to forget politics."

Yes, and it's our job to make them not forget. But you sound like the sort of person who likes this kind of attitude. If all of us took such an attitude, Kerry -- no, actually Al Gore -- would be president and the Rats would have the Senate.

If Hackett had been elected, it would have been a big PR coup for the Rats.

Sounds to me like you're the kind of zealot that turns off my neighbors . . . while I manage to get the to the polls. Wonder whose techniques are best?

No, it's not our "job" to beat people over the head 24/7. In fact, Hamilton and Madison and Jefferson would have completely disagreed with you, arguing that representatives and leaders should THEMSELVES be "real people" who forget about politics for long stretches while they live life.

You are living in a fantasy world. You almost sound like the kind of voter who wishes the terrorist threat from the Islamo-fascists would just go away. Many such people voted for Kerry.

My point is that the Rats will not leave us alone to live our quiet little lives and pray our quiet little prayers.
We are in the middle of a civil war without bullets. We need to fight it. Because the Rats certainly are.

I have no intention of "beating people over the head 24/7."
I simply said that when a special election comes up and is of importance, as this one was, we shouldn't take a complete holiday from politics. As for the charge that I'm a "zealot," well, so are most of the people who make a real difference, my friend. I trust that in my communications with ordinary folks, I don't show as much zealotry as I do sometimes on FReep. I thought FReep was for "zealots." So yes, at times on FReep I speak like one.
Sorry it was too much for you to handle, but that's life.

Hamilton and Madison in the Federalist Papers spoke of the American people's "vigilant and manly spirit" -- specifically in reference to holding their federal government accountable. Your head-in-the-sandk, couch-potato approach would have been anathema to them.

Quite the contrary, the Founders would be sickened by a 24/7 political cycle. They had lives. Try one.

Yes, they would be upset by the fact that things have become so politicized -- by the liberal statists, not by us. But their response wouldn't be to ask Americans to chill out, knock back a cold one, watch ESPN, or do whatever you think is so much more important than saving the country.

Your schoolyard taunts would distress them. My alleged political obsession would make them proud.
