He used the same tactics that Daschle tried to use in South Dakota.........hugging Bush after 9-11 in his ads.
Proves that Democrats are crass bums who will do or say anything to win.
We know that they have been stuffing the ballot boxes for decades.
Yeah, or you could call that rotten commie rag, "People's Republic." At one time, in the 1970's it was a Republican paper. Now it's landfill material.
It really is crap. I was born in Chandler and went to CHS and ASU, and the Republic used to be a pretty good paper. Once Cox bought it out, it is dog puke. (Now I live in Dayton, with the ORIGINAL Cox paper).
Schmidt wins she is up by 700 with just claremont left.
Schmidt will win by about 2,200 votes.
51.5-48.5 about
Yep. The Dems spent enormous sums, time, and effort stacking the deck and they still lost.
The Dems had every and I mean every tactical advantage in this race. They played those tactical advantages to the last incremental vote. They couldn't pull it off.
Thinking Dems (there may be a few) are going to be angry and deeply depressed. They'll put a positive spin on it, but in their heart of hearts they're dying.
Same thing happened in Illinois.
No backbone in the party although the party is in sync with America.
These things run in cycles.
The people in Illinois will get fed up with Durbo trash in time.
Ohio voters need to deal with the RINO's next year.
You may be right. It's tightened up.
Scmidt has nobody to blame but herself. She allowed Hackett to do a very effective job of tagging her as a liar and an insider of Square Bob Sponge tax and his corrupt administrtaion in Columbus.
The only reason I think she failed to respond was because she was certain of a cakewalk.
D-OH!

(08-02) 19:02 PDT CINCINNATI, (AP) --
A Bush-bashing Iraq war veteran and a Republican former state lawmaker were neck-and-neck Tuesday in a closely watched congressional race that could serve as a bellwether for next year's midterm elections.
With 88 percent of precincts reporting, Republican Jean Schmidt had 49,681 votes, compared with 48,811 for Democrat Paul Hackett a margin of under 1,000 votes.
Hackett, 43, is trying to become the first Iraq war combat veteran in Congress and the first Democrat to win the GOP-dominated district in three decades. Schmidt, 53, billed herself as an experienced leader more in tune with the Cincinnati-area district.
The winner will replace Republican Rob Portman, who stepped down this year after being named U.S. trade representative by President Bush. Portman held the seat for 12 years, consistently winning with more than 70 percent of the vote. Bush picked up 64 percent of the vote last year in the district. . . .
Yes. The Freepers not native to the area need to understand that this district endorsed Portman by over 2-1 margins every time. The fact that it's very close is a testament to Schmidt's weakness (she's not too bright, and one of Bob Taft's lackeys) and Hackett's strengths (pro gun and pro military).
This election is a message. Clean up the Iraq mess soon. There is not much patience left.
Cox also runs our local leftwing rag,
what we call the Austin Un-American Space-man.
They must be run by liberals.
I'm not in the district, but I am just north of it, and I detect no such sentiment re: Iraq. Everything I hear is that conservatives had to hold their noses to vote for Schmidt---no energy, no ground game. Hardly any kind of "bellweather."
I have no patience with such inane talk. We will complete the mission in Iraq. To do otherwise would be to commit national suicide. Pound sand.
I was one of those conservatives who held his nose and voted for Schmidt.
Complete what mission? Supporting an Islamic constitution? Get out guys out and nuke the place.
Every election is a bellwether. If the Republican party can't beat the pschitt out of the Rats in a district that they have carried by huge margins, especially after the way the Rats have been conducting themselves, something is badly wrong. A 51-52 percent win in such a district is a failure, no two ways about it. I don't know who exactly to blame, but there is certainly a lot to go around. The poor quality of our candidate -- if that's the case -- shouldn't have mattered that much.
Does anyone know if Bush campaigned for Schmidt? And if he did, what he said on her behalf? And if he didn't, why the hell not? Another thought: Maybe instead of obsessing about bringing more blacks into the GOP, Chairman Ken Mehlman could have spent more time making personal appearances to thank the 2004 Bush volunteers, in the key states especially.
What this near-defeat tells me is that the Republican party has done a PISS-POOR job of keeping its ballyhooed 2004 volunteer team together and motivated. This will be noted by serious political players and commentators. It will not help in setting the stage for a good 2006.
A bad night, people. Admit it and get to work fixing our complacent party and its complacent "leadership."
Hackett is a chairmobile, Remington Ranger. After his showing in this election, I expect ALL DemocRATS in 2006 to claim that they are Operation Iraqi Freedom veterans. Heck! It can't hurt!
The GOP has their work cut out for them there in Ohio. It seems Ohio is leaning little by little towards the blue column and Hitlery knows she has a good shot at taking Ohio...of course I'm in Texas looking in from the outside...WHAT say you Ohioans?
