In the 50+ years I have live in Northern VA (yes there are actual locals around here) we have been blessed with the fact that the Potomac River stands between us and the City. Most of the crime move/flowed South and East into PG County as the former city residences in those areas that moved in to PG County in the 60-70's fled once again south and East to Anne Arundel and Charles and St. Mary Counties to avoid the wave of “issues”; that are bred in Washington DC streets.

We can have a debate on Washington's lack of direction for hours and yes maybe years and always come back to the facts that a city of 90% Democrats, 83% black, 100% urban, with 40 years of meddling by a Democrat controlled Congress, has been unable to find its way other than speedup the death spiral.

DC used to have a population of 875,000 people. Since “Home Rule” kicked in the population has fallen to under 480,000. The local politicians are the worst kind of race baiters ever dragged up from the politics of hate. White areas are taxed at a higher rate than corresponding areas of “color”. Not sections but by the block. The city services are poor, DC streets require SUV for survival of tires and suspension part life, the water and Sewer system is from the 1800 (Hey anyone want to see a 100+ inch pipe made from wood come look under the street around DC), the tax base voting with their feet, and the City wants more $$. Gee I think that more money is not the solution. Congress has played in DC over the years with repeated failures and still comes back for more.

The poor educated blacks who live here find themselves and their families under attack daily by the street crime that sucks up their kids. Looking for a safe place to raise a family they move into the burbs at an ever-increasing rate.

I have called on business in this area for many years and see the destruction on a first hand basis as the streets are littered with crime and plywood covered buildings. This City and maybe Detroit have more 18-34 old males on the street corners pushing drugs than employed in legal businesses.

The solution? Come one and all as the Congress hasn’t a clue how to solve the only Federal run city in the USA.

Oh by the way good old Marion “Mayor for life” Barry was re-elected back to the city council again so stay tune for the next round of National News Reports as Mr. “the bitch set him up” as the locals say, runs again for the Mayor’s chair.

Regarding 16th Street getting renamed: Based on the history of 16th Street I would say let us rename Penn Ave "Ronald Reagan Avenue" as that would spin the local democRATs into a white foaming rage and would be more PRESIDENTIAL too! Kind of a two for one deal.

I have lived in both DC and Maryland, and I think that DC could just become part of Maryland - another county.

Personally, I like the fact that, in DC, East-West streets are named after numbers and North-South streets are named after letters and avenues are diagonal and named after states. So I wouldn't like to rename 16th Street after anyone, not even President Reagan.

I would like to see President Reagan on the $20 bill, though.

Everything you said is true, but, unlike other major cities with race-baiting politicians and declining populations, most of the people who have been leaving DC in the past couple of decades are black (which has made Prince George's County, MD one of the great hubs of the black middle class)while most of the people moving in are white (many of them gays who want to "gentrify" formerly poor neighborhoods).

"Every other federal city in the world has legislative representation typical of that country's other jurisdictions. Plus, none of the founding fathers lived long enough to see D.C. become busy, much less populous, and the circumstances of our existence have changed many times for many reasons over the years."

You're absolutely right. It's a travesty that U.S. citizens who live in DC are not entitled to voting congressional representation. While I would never support DC statehood for several compelling reasons, I would like to see a State of New Columbia created out of the union of DC with Montco and PG County in MD and Alexandria, Fairfax and Falls Church cities and Arlington and Fairfax Counties in VA. This would not only enfranchise residents of DC, but it would also help the GOP increase its majorities in the Senate and make it even more difficult for a Democrat to get a majority in the Electoral College. Without PG and Montco, Maryland would have given Bush 50.52% to 48.29% for Kerry and thus its (reduced) 8 Electoral Votes. And Virginia, which has been trending a bit Democrat of late, would have given Bush 56.54% to only 42.64% for Kerry for 11 EVs. While the State of New Columbia would have given Bush only 30.29% of the vote and thus delivered its 8 EVs to Kerry, the area currently covered by MD, DC and VA that gave Bush 13 EVs and Kerry 13 EVs would have given Bush 19 EVs and Kerry 8 EVs if a State of New Columbia was created out of DC and the aforementioned suburbs. And while the new state would elect 2 Democrats to the Senate, chances are that MD would elect 2 Republicans and VA would definitely elect 2 Republicans.
