Hitler's Mufti, not Hitler's Pope

Many readers of the New York Times no doubt believe that Pope Pius XII was "Hitler's Pope." John Cornwell's bestselling book told them that, and it's been reaffirmed by Garry Wills, Daniel Goldhagen and other writers since. It's been said so often in fact that most well-read liberals know it for a certainty. The only trouble is: it isn't true.

Not only does it contradict the words of Holocaust survivors, the founders of Israel, and the contemporary record of the New York Times, but even John Cornwell, the originator of the phrase "Hitler's pope," has recanted it saying that he was wrong to have ascribed evil motives to Pius and now found it "impossible to judge" the wartime pope.

But there's something else that has been ignored nearly all together. Precisely at the moment when Pope Pius XII and the Catholic Church in Rome (and throughout Europe) was saving thousands of Jewish lives, Hitler had a cleric broadcasting from Berlin who called for the extermination of the Jews.

He was Hajj Amin al-Husseini, the viciously anti-Semitic grand mufti of Jerusalem, who resided in Berlin as a welcome guest and ally of the Nazis throughout the years of the Holocaust.

This may sound like RC bashing, but this is historical fact. Pius XII was not a Hitler's Pope, but he was a Nazi supporter who aided and abetted Nazi war crimes during WWII, helped perpetrators escape justice after the war and helped Nazi loot find a safe place in Vatican.

Unlike Germany, in Croatia RC Church was not in jeopardy and there was no reason for Pius XII to support criminal Ustasha regime who had a goal to exterminate Jews and Orthodox Christians in order to make Croatia 100% Catholic within 10 years.

One may say that Pius XII was unaware of this. Perhaps, although highly unlikely because Ustasha did not hide their intentions.

One may say that RC Chrurch was not involved in Nazi crimes. True for Western Europe, wrong for Croatia.

Under Canon law of RC Church, clergy can not work outside of Church without having tacit Church approval.

In this case, assigned work was to run Concentration camp and exterminate Orthodox Christian children.

What happened after Hitler's demise is equally distrubing. Vatican spirited Nazi war criminals to South America to escape justice.

And documents show that Pius XII personally intervened with Argentina government on Ustasha Nazi behalf.

After the horrendous crimes of RC clergy against Orthodox Christians became known, what was the reaction of Pius XII? EHe elevated Archbishop Stepinac, head of RC Church in Croatia during Nazi regime to the Cardinal.

Revisionism through exaggeration and omission is dishonest and harmful, regardless of the interest behind a particular work of such propaganda. The Human Events piece is a subjective, dishonest propaganda job, as was the work that it reacts to.

In a few months, I will be dedicating a server and backups to documented facts about the history of Christianity concerning Judaism, from beginning to present. ...much more effective for teaching than rhetoric tossed back and forth on discussion boards.

I agree, it is Catholic bashing. But what is the significance of Catholic bashing from all parts of the political spectrum, year after year, including bashing by certain "freepers"? It tells me that I, as a Catholic, have TRULY chosen CHRIST, WHO IS A SIGN OF CONTRADICTION FROM ONE GENERATION TO THE NEXT. "True" Christians will always see Catholics, at worst, as "false" Christians - apostates marked with the sign of the beast! Let them continue to rant and rave. It is very illuminating, indeed!
