That Gounod version is actually despised by many musicians and critics as cheap claptrap, especially for the way he appropriated the Bach Prelude.

Gounod also wrote a nice Ave Maria. I especially like Vic Damone's 1947 rendition of the tune on Capitol Records.
Fortunately he's grown accustomed to me holding loud conversations with myself. He's stopped coming out to ask, "were you talking to me?"
