Pierce Brosnan Out As James Bond, 007
Yahoo News ^

NEW YORK - A single, surprising phone call and it was over. That's how Pierce Brosnan says he learned that his services as James Bond would no longer be required.

"One phone call, that's all it took!" the 52-year-old actor tells Entertainment Weekly magazine in its Aug. 19 issue.

Brosnan starred in four Bond films. He says that before they stopped negotiations, the producers had invited him back for a fifth time.

"You know, the movie career for me really started with Bond," says Brosnan, acknowledging that by the time "GoldenEye" premiered in 1995, he was already 42.

He then starred as 007 in "Tomorrow Never Dies" (1997), "The World Is Not Enough" (1999) and "Die Another Day" (2002).

His departure from the role was a "titanic jolt to the system," says Brosnan, followed by "a great sense of calm."

"I thought. ... I can do anything I want to do now. I'm not beholden to them or anyone. I'm not shackled by some contracted image. So there was a sense of liberation."

Brosnan says he's grateful to have had the role, but adds: "It never felt real to me. I never felt I had complete ownership over Bond. Because you'd have these stupid one-liners — which I loathed — and I always felt phony doing them."

He plays a foulmouthed, skirt-chasing hit man in the upcoming film "The Matador."

"(For this) to come on the heels of my departure from the world of Bond is sweet grace, to play this one as a farewell to that chapter in time — it certainly wasn't planned."

Brings to mind an old Cold War sports joke. There is a Russian/American track meet. In the 100-meter dash the American wins. Pravda headline: "Russian sprinter finishes 2nd. American is next to last."

Brosnan was an excellent Bond, IMHO.

We've been watching the 007 movies lately on Turner South. No one will ever come close to Sean Connery.

I liked Brosnan in Remington Steele. Lately he has been mouthing off about his liberal political ideas and his one-time gay gene. Thoroughly destroyed the Bond image for me.

Too bad we can't rejuvenate Sean Connery -- he was my favorite --

With the way Hollywood is going, Ashton Kutcher will be the next Bond. Or Jamie Foxx. Or Angelina Jolie will be "Jessica Bond".

I love it when actors go on about the marvel of "being free". Before Bond he was free to watch Lifetime movies all day, and then he was burdened by those millions of dollars, travelling the world to premieres with Beautiful People, fame. Yeah, that sucks, you're well rid of it Pierce.

If Brosnan had been a little more powerfully built he would have been ok. He was unfortunate in that by the time he was cast, the movies had basically degenerated into cartoons.

I absolutely hated Roger Moore who came across as a prissy girly man. He was fair in Octopussy tho.

Sheesh, complaining about the lines that help make Bond Bond. He was OK, but he was the worst of the 3 (not counting the "other" Bond )

All right, all right. I'll be the next Bond, but only if Nicole Kidman is the Bond girl.

There is a Brit named Nathaniel Parker whom I think would be an excellent new Bond.

Thank God this is not the case. I heard a few weeks ago that it is going to be Clive Owen. I've seen him in a couple movies and I think he'll make an excellent Bond.

Moore injected a bit more humor into the role, but "Moonraker" was the very first Bond film I ever saw, so I have an affinity for him. :o)

I even liked Timothy Dalton in "The Living Daylights."

Brosnan must have been the last to find this out. Since the early summer, the producers have been looking for a new Bond. If I recall, they already signed someone.

That's OK Mr Brosnan, because, I never felt you were James Bond. As an actor you never were able to hold Sean Connery's script. As James Bond, you couldn't hold George Lassinby's (sp?) shaken martini glass.
