OPINION: San Francisco Declares Itself a Military-Free Zone
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | 8/24/5 | Cinnamon Stillwell

Posted on 08/24/2005 5:47:20 AM PDT by SmithL

Everyone knows that San Francisco is a focal point for anti-war sentiment. Protests, civil disobedience and other acts designed to show opposition to the war in Iraq are standard fare in these parts. But now it seems that San Francisco anti-war activists have taken their opposition to the war in Iraq a step further.

Not content with simply protesting the war, they've trained their sights on all things military. In an apparent effort to rid the city of any semblance of its military history, various leftist groups, and even some city officials, are trying to erase the military's presence altogether. In short, San Francisco has declared itself a military-free zone.

Following on the heels of their success in sometimes violently shutting down job fairs that include military recruiters on college campuses, the counterrecruitment

movement is now looking to broaden its influence. Instead of merely protesting the existence of military recruiters on campuses, the movement wants to ban them altogether. Proposition I, a measure that will be on the ballot this November, seeks to do just that.

Put together by a group called College Not Combat, the initiative of the same name talks tough on the surface. But it doesn't have any teeth. The nonbinding measure simply asks that individual schools and colleges consider banning military recruiters and denying recruiters access to their student directories, which would violate section 9258 of the No Child Left Behind Act. In the process, these schools could very well have to forgo federal funds. Given that such institutions are unlikely to want to get off the federal gravy train, it's doubtful they will choose to take this action.

San Francisco's Politburo is trying to make this beautiful City completely irrelevant.

There is, and will continue to be, only one SF. That's why it can do whatever it likes - it will never effect tourism or people's desire to reside by the Bay. Besides, residents pay hefty taxes which go towards, you guessed it, funding our military.

SF can get as whacky as it wants because it conveniently resides within Calif, perhaps the most militarily important state (along with Virginia) in the US.

Keep in mind that Diane Feinstein used to be the mayor of San Francisco. Silly Willie Brown was for a while as well. Now they have Gavin Newsome, remember he was the one that went against the California constitution and tried to legalize Gay marraiges.

They probably thought it was pretty conservative, compared to "Moon Unit."

I've got one better. I took my wife in this past Monday morning for outpatient surgery and the first name of the RN that was prepping her was (I'm not joking it was on her nametag) "Mecca". She was as blond and white as a Swedish model. Can you believe someone would actually name their child Mecca?

Maybe muzzies name their little girls Mecca, I don't know. All I can figure is that her parents must have been drugged-out hippies from the 60's. And of course my dear sweet clueless wife has to draw attention to it by saying, " I see your name is Mecca. That's a very....(awkward pause)....unusual name." I swear my wife should have been named Edith. Aw, geez.

Maybe if the girl named "Mecca" hears that enough times she'll change her name to something reasonable. It's easy to change one's first name.

There's plenty of good names out there - she can look in the baby name books!

SF, Boston, Seattle -- are becoming relatively childless.

Probably because they are so expensive to live in, people can't afford to have children.

One of our HR ladies is named Cinnamon. I guess it's a real name.

Could be a nickname. Or maybe she has foreign parents who gave her a name that's common in their country but sounds ridiculous in ours.

Yep. Navy daughter, Army wife and Mom and Army educator. I loved SF. Family is from there and I lived in Marin for several years. Never again.
My dad was CoC of ComBatCruLant and on the Iowa. I know that ship and I'll make my destination Stockton.
I can only assume that with the next major earthquake SF will suddenly forget its aversion to the military and ask for Guard and Reserve assistance. If the assistance is there, it will be grudging. Ah, Peter-Pan-Land on the Bay.

Oh, you don't know Cinnamon? You should check out her Archive. She's a true conservative, and writes some really great stuff. Here is her story:

OPINION: The Making Of A 9/11 Republican"
- Cinnamon Stillwell
Thursday, February 24, 2005

As one of a handful of Bay Area conservative columnists, I'm no stranger to pushing buttons. Indeed, I welcome feedback from readers, whether positive or negative. I find the interplay stimulating, but I am often bemused by the stereotypical assumptions made by my critics on the left. It's not enough to simply disagree with my views; I have to be twisted into a conservative caricature that apparently makes opponents feel superior. They seem not to have considered that it's possible to put forward different approaches to various societal problems and not be the devil incarnate.

But in some ways I understand where this perspective comes from, because I once shared it. I was raised in liberal Marin County, and my first name (which garners more comments than anything else) is a direct product of the hippie generation. Growing up, I bought into the prevailing liberal wisdom of my surroundings because I didn't know anything else. I wrote off all Republicans as ignorant, intolerant yahoos. It didn't matter that I knew none personally; it was simply de rigueur to look down on such people. The fact that I was being a bigot never occurred to me, because I was certain that I inhabited the moral high ground.

Having been indoctrinated in the postcolonialist, self-loathing school of multiculturalism, I thought America was the root of all evil in the world. Its democratic form of government and capitalist economic system was nothing more than a machine in which citizens were forced to be cogs. I put aside the nagging question of why so many people all over the world risk their lives to come to the United States. Freedom of speech, religious freedom, women's rights, gay rights (yes, even without same-sex marriage), social and economic mobility, relative racial harmony and democracy itself were all taken for granted in my narrow, insulated world view.

So, what happened to change all that? In a nutshell, 9/11. . . .

I wanted to ask her if she had a sister named Medina, but good judgement prevailed to save me.

I live in Seattle, and can tell you that although it is a young city (you rarely see anyone over 40), there are more dogs than children. They even turned an old high school into condominiums.

I live in Belltown and can vouch for everything you say. Let's not forget that military recruiters were CHASED OFF of campus by a mob at Seattle Central Community College in Capitol Hill.

After the war, SF's waterfront was run by an Australian labor boss that wouldn't allow Pampanito at any SF dock.

That would be "Red" Harry Bridges, an died in the wool Communist who founded the ILWU.

That is the one glaring weakness of the Constitution. The founders should have made it possible for a vote of 2/3 of the states to evict states or parts of states that no longer have any value to the rest of the country, that share none of its philosophy or culture. That would be a vast improvement over having the blue cancers growing on both coasts, whose malignant ideology is spread by their carriers, the msm.

It doesn't really sound that bad, but more like a cat, dog or horse name.

I just can't imagine being a parent and choosing that name.
