Rocks thrown by immigrants damage Border Patrol helicopter

YUMA - A rock allegedly thrown by an illegal immigrant forced a Border Patrol helicopter to make an emergency landing after a rotor was damaged.

The A-Star helicopter was two miles west of the U.S. Port of Entry in Andrade, Calif., on Tuesday when a group of immigrants began throwing rocks at the aircraft.

One baseball-sized rock struck a rotor and gashed it, forcing the pilot to land the helicopter nearby, said Border Patrol spokesman Michael Gramley.

Neither the Customs and Border Protection pilot nor the Border Patrol observer were injured.

Gramley said he did not know how high the helicopter was hovering when it was struck, but it was being repaired and was expected to be back in service soon.

The incident was a first for the Border Patrol's Yuma sector, which covers the section of Arizona between the Pima County line and California.

A group of 17 illegal immigrants was apprehended.

Isn't this the second incident of a helicopter being brought down in the last few weeks?

I've been thinking that for some time now. I live in Madera. Ca. and I'm waiting for the troops to come and move me back in to Fresno so they can give Madera back to it's rightful owners!

Just a thought...

The rocks were not thrown by immigrants, they were thrown by criminals.

It would seem that there's some sort of (deliberate?) misinterpretation of a term here. It's like calling a stowaway an illegal passenger.

As a matter of curiosity, what about that old USSR policy: during the Cold War, the Russkies used to shoot anyone crossing the border illegally on sight (or capture them if there was a political need for it.)

You are just not sensitive to the plight of the downtrodden masses. (/sarcasm) [hopefully obvious]

These helicopters should be equipped with Gatling guns and should be allowed to open fire in certain situations. What if the Mexicans started firing at the helicopter? The thrown rock could have potentially killed an American citizen and cost the government millions in expenses to buy a new aircraft. Only in America will you find such irrational compassion. This illegal ought to be brought to the united states with all his friends who took part in this event. They ought to wash dishes in a federal prision for 50 years to pay off the governments repair expenses. How is this not fair?

I blame the illegal enablers as much as I do the illegals for this. The ethnic and business lobbyists, and their captive politicians and judges, that promote illegal immigration, all have blood on their hands.

...throwing rocks Americans were unwilling to throw.

In truth the 'Americas' consist of North America, Central America and South America.
Therefore Mexicans actually are 'Americans', as are Columbians, Brazilians, Canadians, Hondurans, Peruvians and U.S. citizens.

Yep, it's obvious.

On the serious (series...) note: there can be two kinds of borders, a free for all, Wild West like - I don't think our society is quite geared for it at this stage, or the establishment we grew to know and love, where every state is separate from each other.

The free for all one is not unfeasible at all, the trick is no-one would agree to it, as the second amendment would have to be a second nature; I don't see the gummint agreeing to it without any reservations.
