ARLEN SPECTER & ABLE DANGER (Arlen's letter to FBI)
NRO ^ | KJ Lopez

Posted on 08/25/2005 8:49:25 PM PDT by hipaatwo

Honorable Robert Mueller Director Federal Bureau of Investigation 935 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW Washington, D. C. 20535-0001

Dear Director Mueller,

It has been reported in the news media and directly to my staff that Army Lt. Colonel Anthony Shaffer was the operations officer for a secret military program referred to as Able Danger. The mission of Able Danger was to use a sophisticated data mining program in conjunction with more traditional military intelligence methods to identify and track al Qaida terrorists oversees.

In connection with this mission, Shaffer reports that he and his associates discovered the names and U.S. locations of three of the four 9-11 pilots a year prior to 9-11. Because the suspected al Qaida terrorists were located in the U.S., Shaffer reports that he made repeated requests of Defense Intelligence Agency (“DIA”) officials to schedule a meeting with FBI officials in order to present this intelligence to the FBI for further investigation. Shaffer further contacted FBI agent Xanthig Mangum and asked her to schedule such a meeting within FBI. Shaffer states that he made this request both verbally and by email to Agent Mangum. Shaffer claims that the DIA decided not to share this information with the FBI on the advice of legal counsel and that certain meetings that had been scheduled on this issue were cancelled as a result.

This is an official request that your office provide to the Judiciary Committee all information and documents it has in connection with Able Danger, Lt. Colonel Anthony Shaffer, Captain Scott Phillipot or any other persons having any connections with Project Able Danger, including, but not limited to, email communication, notes, phone message slips, memos or any other supporting documentation.

I would appreciate it if you would provide Agent Mangum for an interview with my staff at your earliest convenience. Also, please provide information concerning any and all requests made to the FBI by any other entity, agency, branch or commission in connection with Agent Mangum, Lt Colonel Shaffer, Project Able Danger or any related matters, including, but not limited to, requests for interviews or documents.

Thank you for your attention to this important question about cross agency information sharing.

Sincerely,

Arlen Specter

A nice Letter...but how about a nice Subpoena! You see, a nice letter is just that, a nice letter. If they do not comply, there is no law broken, and Specter knows this!

What a sham!

Why is Specter's committee, Judiciary, conducting this investigation? Seems this would belong in Intelligence, Armed Forces or Foreign Relations.

Will the "magic bullet" be deployed to shoot down Able Danger?

Under the auspices of Scottish law, of course...

Who called the lawyers.

WHO, in the end, made the call and then the decision; to have Gorelick serve on this Commission.

Who called Sandy Berger and needed a 'favor'. . .

And is there a 'collective' stonewall. . .or just a few self-ordained Demrats from the Commision 'calling the shots'.

Well, now that Arlen's on the case, I'm sure we'll get to the bottom of it.

Yeah. I'm sure Mr. Magic Bullet will finally hold Washington accountable for the deaths of 3000 Americans. I'm sure Arlen will make it perfectly clear as to why Able Danger was kept out of the loop even after 3000 people were incinerated.

Sure. Whatever. Mr. Magic Bullet is going to work his magic again.

It may be try that the FBI will cooperate, or it may not be...but any information they provide will be killed at birth in Spector's committee, and it will never see the light of day.

Nonsense this will not be killed. Specter may not survive the end of the hearings but will want to go out on a high note. Besides there are OTHER Senators as well. This is going to be huge.

I agree, this is going to be huge, but I think it will be huge in spite of Arlen, not because of him. If anything, he will make his best efforts to hide the truth...he will be doing what he has done for years, and that is act as a shill for others and to keep the truth from the public.

If he was serious, he would have subpoenaed the information right away. By not doing that, he will start a long give and take with by making repeated requests so he can act the tough guy...but in the end, he will drag out the process of getting to the truth in an effort to wait out the public...

I think this is a chance to revert to the good work he did getting Thomas confirmed and he will take it. There will be plenty of FBI incentive to get to the bottom of this and no one there now is going to risk their ass for whatever mopes blew it ten years ago. The Director will make sure of it.

And this needs to be dragged out for the next year. Specter was put on notice in getting his chair.

Yeah, but will they postpone the Roberts gearing as a result or put Able Danger on ice while they deal with Roberts' confirmation?

Anyway, I am not so certain he did all that much good work in the past, except on issues that were going to win anyway...but when the chips were down and serious investigations of serious matters were needed, he has consistently been found wanting. I'd never hire him as my lawyer if he were in private practice, even though I'm Scottish.

How strong can an investigation of this magnitude be if the committee chair has to have "minders?" The energy will be divided between internecine bickering, rather than having a unified front to address the inevitable stonewalling that will be coming. I do not agree that those in power now and in the know are motivated to bring this to light...they still have skeletons, and they are not going to let that happen.

its bigger than arlen and the rest. weldon may have hard copy backups. the shot across the pentagons bow was heard by everyone. the fbi thing is a head fake to slow down the flood of information and speculation. it will not matter the dam is leaking badly . maybe no one big will go down if this blows up, but look what we will have learned. they old boys will matter less and less. information is the key to a secure future and we all know it. these hacks are old news. think of how sites like this one have driven this story. all the info and now the first of many hearings. and all of this without the help of the the so called big media. which is understandable after all it takes a lot of time to focus on sheehan , aruba, body counts , gas prices and the roberts adoptions.

There seems to have been a problem downloading this page.

These two lines are garbled, it appears. At least the first one is wrong.

Sincerely,

Arlen Specter

It should be,

Wink-wink, nudge-nudge

Arlen Specter

Specter should about be wrapping up those OKC hearings he promised Jayna Davis on radio, publically, in writing also, out loud in his own voice, in his own handwriting, on his own stationary, in front of TV news cameras. . . .

"seems to me our friend Arlen is a little too interested in how we COLLECT the information and not on why it wasn't SHARED."

To the contrary it appears that, like a good prosecutor would do, Arlene is trying to establish that it wasn't shared. If the FBI produces records that Shaffer or anyone else connected to Able Danger tried to create a dialog with the FBI then the next step is to show why the dialog didn't take place.

Could turn out to be a I called, did not argument in which case another venue would have to be pursued, but Arlene's letter will put people on record one way or the other.

Arlen Specter has been a useful idiot for Washington elites for decades.
It started out with his one bullet theory to prop up the warren commission report that a lone gunman shot kennedy.

Then his defense of his acquittal vote against clinton using his now famous scottish law defense.

Washington elites know where to go when they need a real whitewash cover-up, unlike the rank amateurs on the 911 commission
