President Bush: "We are dealing with one of the worst national disasters in our nation's history." Push has appropriated vast federal resources to assist with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
78,000 people are currently in shelters. New Orleans evacuation continues. 10,000 additional National Guard troops have been called to service.
Hospitals are running low on supplies, and public health concerns include water borne disease, poor sanitation, food and drinking water contamination and shortages, mosquitoes, carbon monixide poisoning from electricity generators, lack of childcare, and the special needs of the elderly.

Can't begin to thank everyone for good wishes.
It is true, the State capitol was in lockdown as was the Dept of Rev and some buildings. There were problems.
The Tanger Mall and other Mall stuff I did not hear.
We are quiet here, concern over refugees being out and about. One person went to the River Center where there was trouble and said it felt "dangerous". The people were rude, shoving, rough, argumentative. They were not surprised there was troulbe. Plus they were grabbing things sort of indiscriminately and throwing away half eaten sandwiches, etc. She said she had not seen such waste in a time of urgency. She said it felt really bad down there.
I feel safe, I think the trouble downtown has lessened. I don't know about hijackings, some swear it is happening. I think the Gov talking about "remain calm" may be a sign that all is not well.
What in the world is wrong with the governor???

You are so kind. We had power restored last night. I hate to miss work, but at least I'm comfortable here at home. I've heard about the violence at the gas stations and I fear it's only going to get worse as people begin to run out of food. I had to throw out a lot of stuff that rotted while the power was out. I wish now that I hadn't wasted so much gas searching for ice and food. Oh, well. We will get through this. Please take care.

Port of New Orleans is open to shallow draft vessels.
I would worry when they dewater the lake water, and the saturated conditions and increasing pressure from the river could cause a rupture of the river levees which are still intact, as far as we know.
It's not going to happen on FR either.
I remember and was called out as a 'hoax" which it was not.

Absolutely. This disaster has brought out the best in people and the worst in people. It's obvious that a large part of our society is reprobate and uncivilized. How do we bring these people into a lifestyle so that they can peacefully live with others? As a Christian, I believe that evangelism is certainly the primary answer, but I also believe that we have to change our schools and other social institutions. They've never been taught any sort of personal responsibility.

As long as it is still US terrority, the Americans there will have to wait all that much longer for the full power of the US Government.

she got the word from the DNC - do nothing, let it either get out of control, or force Bush to step in. the DNC wants the media to be able run video of "residents" (looters) of new orleans being gunned down by the US military. and they will play the race card too. its their dream, Blanco has likely been promised a cabinet position in the Hillary regime in 2008 if she can deliver this.
