I'm late to this thread today (and the news in general), but the Governor is now saying there are 200,000 to 300,000 people to be evacuated from NO? So much for their initial claims of evacuating 80% of the city then.

Just watched an interview on CNN (yes, I know...I switch all around the dial) with Bush 41 and Clinton... she tried to blame Bush for this mess and CLINTON jumped all over her! He cut of 41 to have his say and got red in the face doing it... he said the President is doing everything he can and this is no time for anyone to point fingers at him

You know what? Good for him! It's a damn shame that people that take pot shots at Bush have less common decency then the other ex President they take shots at. I congratulate Clinton for shutting the witch down.

Well, martial law is just that - the suspension of civil authority. I don't think you can have 'partial martial law.' So whoever is in charge, is in charge.

I really don't think Washington wants to use active duty military doing law enforcement against rogue Americans in an increasingly desparate environment. The application of military in law enforcement is not subtle (nor should it be). And I don't think the state or local officials want to take responsibility for the inevitable collateral damage that would result from turning the army loose on the citizenry - especially in a town where racial politics play such a large role.

The situation will improve. While there is undoubtedly a garden-variety criminal aspect to all of this, it does seem that some of it is being driven by desperation, as well. One thing many of us are forgetting is that these folks are not only in desparate situations, but they don't have any idea what is going on. They get plucked from their roof, or wade through the streets, to the convention center or the SD, or they are holed up upstairs somewhere, and all they see is that the city is submerged and the civil authority seems to have broken down completely. Whether this is going to last for a day or two, or whether it simply is the way things are, now, is something they don't know. I imagine there are some folks who would do just about anything to get out of that hellhole if they didn't have any idea what was happening.

If it was just me, I know what I'd be doing - and I'd be long gone from the central city, on foot, with whatever gear I could take (Before I had a young child, I was a backpacker. I still consider myself such, even if I never get to go. ;-) ), a shotgun and as many shells as I could carry. But if I had my daughter with me in that hellhole, I doubt I'd be constrained by any societal norms in my efforts to get her out.

You're absolutely right.
These mobs are doing what they've been allowed to do all their lives. Although I've not been there it legendary that one should not leave main tourist areas when visiting NO.
Truly a locally created shame that we will all pay for.

Those rapes & murders were reported to have happened in the Convention Center, a different building were many refugees have been kept (not to say very bad things didn't happen in the Super Dome either)...

This is the 2X4 the Left will use to beat up our President--and with our
Cindy Sheehan "we're all just victims" mentality it will work all too well.

AARRGGHH!!!!!

The left has found a new 2x4, they are going to town with it and with glee asking why President Bush did not think of it.

I listened to an hour of the Ed Schultz radio program.

He is asking listeners to "take in a family".

Liberals are calling and saying "I will, because Bush does not care......."

Ed said that Moveon.org has also started a movement to adopt a family.

No, I am not against the Adopt a family program, I am against the extra ugly words that are being said with it.

Offering a home from the goodness of your heart is a wonderful gift, offering it from hate, just plain scares me.

Betchya CNN won't replay that interview too many times. Can't have the truth getting out now, can they?

i was sitting here feeling pretty smug, thinking i could live for about 2 weeks pretty easy, another week not so smoothly.

then i realized how this scenario might change if my house were gone/inaccesable.

still, folks should be prepared, it's cheap and it gives you peace of mind.
