"I concur. If it is rebuilt move it north of the Lake on higher ground or something. They are basically starting from scratch anyway."

What about the folks on the North Side of the lake? I guess they could just dump dirt and build it up (similar to the Tokyo airport) expensive though, everything would have to come down.

agree. my real beef that FAR more money is wasted in chicago than NO. Why not cut off Denny's pork and take a collection.

Of course, NO should redeveloped with better levies and the ground raised. maybe in stages due to the cost.

Surprised nobody's posted this yet (that I've seen).

"New Orleans Is Sinking"

Bourbon blues on the street loose and complete
Under skies all smoky blue-green
I can Forksake the dixie dead shake
So we dance the sidewalk clean
My memory is muddy what's this river I'm in
New Orleans is sinking and I don't want to swim

Colonel Tom What's wrong? What's Going On
You can't tie yourself up for a deal
He said" Hey North you're south shut you big mouth
You gotta do what you feel is real."
Ain't got no picture postcards ain't go no souvenirs
My baby she don't know me when I'm thinking about those years

Pale as a light bulb hanging on a wire
Sucking up to someone just stoke the fire
Picking out the highlights of the scenery
Saw a little cloud looked a little like me

I had My hand in the river
My feet back up on the banks
Looked up to the lord above and said hey man thanks
Some time I fell so good I gotta scream
She says Gordie baby I know exactly what you mean
She said, she said I swear to god she said

My memory is muddy what's this river I'm in
New Orleans is sinking and I don't want to swim

If it is rebuilt move it north of the Lake on higher ground or something. They are basically starting from scratch anyway.

Most definitely.

"It looks like a lot of that place could be bulldozed,"

I agree.

Yep. After watching the coverage at lunch today, I certainly agree.

Well put me on your jerk list because I totally agree with him and I do not think one cent of our tax money should cover the rebuilding effort.

Just let it go, it is not worth rebuilding.

And I am against spending tax dollars to rebuild in other areas where people build homes on land that is in a high risk area, let them take the risk, notme.

Yes, Louisiana now has 9 electoral votes. However, after the 2010 Census it will only have 3 electoral votes. I think that is what the other poster was referring to.

Yup, and continental drift will continue, volcanoes will awaken and go dorment, lightening strikes and grass fires will happen, earth quakes will continue.

And some places face far less risk than others, and some actions both deal with existing risk and future risk such as the Mississippi changing channels to the west.

Saying that every place has some risk, so why bother, isn't being serious.

I'll leave the details to the civil engineers. I just deal in cubic yards and equipment.

Oh, I'm very, very aware of Republican government-enhancing porkage - I see the budgets (and deficits) exploding to new heights under these "limited government" posturing liars. It's sickening.

And their Katrina pandering and vote-buying has just begun.

I believe that quite a few of these displaced people will settle somewhere else, probably in the town where they are being relocated. If they find jobs, as Houston is planning to help with, adjust to schools and they have lost everything in NO, it makes sense.

"The Dutch live below sea level. Their levies are way better than N.O."

Yeah, but they don't have hurricanes.

They did have a huge flood in the 1950's -- the North Sea flood (combination of severe windstorm and high spring tide). 10 per cent of Holland's agricultural land was flooded, thousands killed, many more evacuated. They learned from that and built a massive system of dikes & seawalls, you are right, much better than ours. They were willing to invest the money -- we have not been. But the Dutch are really scared it could happen again even so, given the current rise of sea levels.
