Ray Nagin: School Busses Not Enough, Send Greyhound!
NewsMax ^ | 8 Sep 05

The more this guy opens his mouth, the deeper the hole...

Ray Nagin: School Buses Not Good Enough

New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin garnered a ton of publicity with a profanity-laced interview he gave to WWL radio last Thursday, where he blasted President Bush and Louisiana Gov. Kathleen Blanco for not coming to rescue his city in time.

However, Nagin's most newsworthy comments - where he explained why he didn't use hundreds of city school buses to evacuate his city's flood victims - went almost unnoticed. Turns out, Nagin turned his nose up at the yellow buses, demanding more comfortable Greyhound coaches instead.

"I need 500 buses, man," he told WWL. "One of the briefings we had they were talking about getting, you know, public school bus drivers to come down here and bus people out of here."

Nagin described his response: "I'm like - you've got to be kidding me. This is a natural disaster. Get every doggone Greyhound bus line in the country and get their asses moving to New Orleans."

While Nagin was waiting for his Greyhound fleet, Katrina's floodwaters swamped his school buses, rendering them unusable.

'You can't make it up' What else is this guy hiding that's going to come out?

Sound wisdom has two sides. Whenever the New Orleans Mayor speaks, you have to get the 'other side' if you want to determine the truth. Case in point - turns out that over 2000 school busses in New Orleans could have been used to evacuate citizens -but were not -because the Mayor vetoed the proposal in favor of obtaining more plush Greyhound busses. You can't make it up! What else is this guy hiding that's going to come out?

Maybe it was more practical than that. His drivers had boogied out of town when he moved his feets to Baton Rouge ahead of the storm. I bet they would not let non-union drivers do it either. The plan was to use those busses but I bet noone told the drivers or put it in their contracts. Anyone with access to those sorts of labor agreements?

The other day in an interview, Nagin excused the criminals who were robbing drugs from pharmacies, because he said it was understandable that they had to feed their habits. Then he added that he was not high on drugs himself.

I wonder. I suspect this guy has probably fried his brains, and that's one reason why he is so totally out of it. Great mayor!

He needs to face charges for criminal malfeasance.

Funny thing is that even here on FR a lot of us thought Nagin was a decent, "DINO" conservative Dem back in '02. He may be on the individual issues but he's still a race-baiting, whining, incompetent fool.

What makes him think he has a right to demand and commandeer the buses belonging to Greyhound. He not only thinks the federal government has to come in and do what the city was supposed to do for itself, he thinks he has a right to demand that private citizens do for New Orleaneans.

This is actually a very useful defense (for sanity) from this useless idiot. Sure, that plays. A Cat-5 storm is baring down on you and the buses, 1 mile away, don't provide the right comfort level that the upscale Greyhounds do. Let him (and the MSM) stay with that defense.

Yeah...and that's why a 20-year old was still able to steal a school bus on WEDNESDAY and drive 70 people out of New Orleans...two days before the Mayor's rant. Forget the 48 hours the Mayor wasted before the storm; he still had 24-hours after the storm hit and before the levees broke, and according to this story, anytime in between.

It is more than 200. When I counted the buses on satellite photos of just two parking lots I had over 400. There were other parking lots which I didn't count.

Well, there is the explanation that the School Board, in negotiations over months or years, wouldn't agree to allow their buses to be used in an emergency.

When a Cat 5 hurricane is headed directly your way, the nuances of union driver contracts go out the window.

A 15 year old KID managed to drive one to the Superdome, load it with refugees, and drive them out of NO to safety. 'nuff said.

I just heard this one Rush. Nagin was quoted on a radio station as saying the school buses weren't enough - he wanted Greyhounds. But then did NOTHING to ensure that commercial drivers were available.

This is just unbelievable. The more that comes out, the more even the mainstream media starting to SLOWLY get it.

I have a different take on this interview. It seems to me he is not answering the the question why didn't he use school buses BEFORE the storm, but why wasn't he using them AFTER the storm. Here's the telling quote:

where he explained why he didn't use hundreds of city school buses to evacuate his city's flood victims

They weren't flood victims until after the storm.

200, 2000, whatever - point is that a LOT OF BUSSES WERE NOT USED BY MAYORAL DECISION. When you're talking hundreds of busses minimum, the exact order of magnitude is a relatively minor issue.

Another aspect of the bus story needing more attention is to get a handle on the number of buses in the Baton Rouge School District and the number of municipal buses in the city of Baton Rouge.

There are likely 300 school and municipal buses in Baton Rouge that could have been used on Saturday and Sunday before the storm hit to evacuate the New Orleans residents.

Then on Tuesday those same 300 or so Baton Rouge buses could have first hauled the entire Louisiana National Guard to the Superdome and return with the people who had stayed in the Superdome.

If Nagin and Blanco had half a brain they could have handled the entire situation all by themselves.

Instead, I fear that those politicians who are enablers for the welfare class, become just like the welfare class they have created. Namely, these liberal politicians can no longer think for themselves, but instead wait for a higher level of government to tell them what to do.

I assume Mayor Nagin poses no threat To Mayor Guiliani in ths sales of books on leadership. The first response to any local problem must come from local authorities.

I have no problem agreeing with the fact that Nagin is negligent in not following the NO evac plan. I would, however, like to hear both his and the governor's rationalization for not doing it. I don't think we've heard it yet. I imagine it will be as lame as any excuse we've heard so far.

Agree. And not just the politicians but the masses as well. The left gets this entitlement group-think out there all the time - and the right generally does a poor job refuting it. This story is such an example, and there are more.

Where are the Republican Congressmen taking to the floor of the House in "outrage" at the decisions of the Ray Nagins of this disaster?
