Actually I was imagining that the government MIGHT give tax breaks, not trying to insinuate that she was doing it for dubious reasons. If the government gives tax breaks, like they do for charitable donations, people don't look at it as a handout. The apartment owners are taking a risk with their property, and putting lots of hours in the logistics of the offers. I think its a good thing.

Re#94 Some will, of course. I would hope they have an ID requirement for use. But not to vote, of course. ;^)

This will be unpopular but I'm going to ask it. Would they be getting cash, cruise offers, etc. if the majority were white? Just asking.

Can I also point out that many of these people have insurance that will cover a lot of this.

My family got out and are staying with relatives in Houston. Will be interesting to see if they get anything. Although, I just doubt they would take it.

Did Andrew victims get this cash handout? Maybe they did and I just never heard about it. However, it seems that Katrina may become a highest bidder contest between the left and right. This isn't good.

I was wondering the same thing about previous hurricane "victims".

btw, did you happen to notice all the flooded cars in NO? Fox was touring the 9th district last night and there were cars galore. I thought NO ONE had transportation??

That my friend is the truth.

the local and state goverment in the last 50 years has F-ed up La without the help of the federal government.

La residents have been paying for the crookedness and now it is going to be the rest of the nation that pays.

Yeah, good point about the flooded cars. I suppose they could be second cars for those who left. Some of them anyway. But the fact is, NO had an evacuation plan for the poor that they just ignored. Using the school buses would have rescued both the people and the buses. Now they have dead people and have to likely buy new school buses too.

"Within a week, the debit card program will end up being exposed a poorly run government program that is fraught with scandal. The blame will be put on the Bush administration for the poor controls used. TV will show the grinning faces of recently moved NO looters (and non-NO looters) with their shopping baskets brimming. Many of these folks will have several cards in their possession".

I am shocked by your lack of faith in humanity! I am so upset that I may have to start an opus thread, and haul my butt out of here, until I stop laughing!

Fellow Freepers:

At the suggestion of writer Michelle Malkin last Friday, I have cobbled together a blogsite called Texas Clearinghouse for Katrina Aid to serve as a clearinghouse for refugee efforts in Texas.

Texas is getting more refugees than any other state -- that's fine, we'll take them all -- but we need help providing them with food, clothing, medicine, and shelter. We need help taking care of their pets, too.

If you are a refugee, you can information that will help you find relief. If you want to donate or volunteer, you can find someone who needs you. Believe me, there are a lot of organizations who need your help.

Right now the site mostly covers Houston, San Antonio, and Dallas but I'm adding more every night. My wife was down at Reunion Arena in Dallas Tuesday handing out care packages and spiritually ministering to the refugees as a representative of her employer. She says that the situation is tragic and that there's a lot of work to be done. There are so many children who don't know where their parents are or even if their parents are still alive.

There are a lot of churches and other organizations in Texas that need help in dealing with the problem and I would appreciate it if you would get the word out.

Many thanks,

Michael McCullough

Stingray blogsite

The ones who left early and are in other shelters will be entitled to apply on Saturday afternoon, after they have dealt with the people in the GRB and the Astrodome. I think that the authorities here have handled processing such a large number of people in such a short period of time fairly well.
