I think part of the problem is that the general public does not understand that the Homeland Security that any mainstream media does refer to see it as being a Bush appointee and not that each state has someone in this position that is appointed by the state in question ---- which is very handy for the media.

Case in point: McGreevy's boyfriend, Golan Cipel. Most assuredly not a Bush apointee.

Yes. This was the first one that I thought of when this came up. I think the media exploits this which is no surprise. I honestly don't think people know this and Homeland Security is still new. This is a problem.

OK, now I am adding yet another layer of tin foil. Everyone in the whole country knew those people needed to get out of the Superdome. We now hear that the following groups were kept from helping:

1. The National Guard, because Blanco didn't initially mobilize enough of them.

2. The American Red Cross (turned back by Louisiana officials)

3. The Salvation Army (turned back by Louisiana officials)

4.Hundreds of private citizens with boats ready to get people out of their homes (turned back by Louisiana Fish and Wildllife officials)

5. Mobile hospitals and doctors from George (turned back by Louisiana officials)

6. Ham operators offering to help in communications (turned down by Louisiana officials)

Now, I don't know about you, but to me this looks like a deliberate plan, NOT incompetence.

The MSM is killing any vestiges of Credibility they have left. The fact that the NY Times invented a news story with Gerlado Rivera and blatantly lied about it is amazing. Gerlado is going to sue for Malice. They have had an opportunity to correct the story and their Editors refuse to do so. I've been asking that for 3+years --- This administration has the worst PR (since Ari left) of any admin since Carter. Clinton would have his minions in front of the mic's and cameras even before a negative story hit the major news wires. This administration waits days, until the PR damage is already done, before they weakly react. And Bush2 currently has the lowest rating (41%) of any modern President. Maybe Bush2 thinks, since he won his final term, he doesn't have to worry about PR.

If your rant resembled truth, then there's absolutely no way Bush could have won re-election against an organized media, vicious assaults from well-funded leftist groups, and even a movie produced and released in theaters nationwide specifically to bring him down.

For example: I just heard Bob Shieffer, do his Friday promo for Face the Nation on a local radio station. He is having Mary Landrieu on and Susan Collins. He just mentioned Collins as an afterthought. Shieffer has totally made up his mind about what happened and how the story is going to be told and how there is going to be a Blue Ribbon Commission instead of a Congressional Commission, etc. I wish I had recorded his words. They could be used in a seminar on "Judgment before the Evidence."

I agree Peach. Many of the underlying reasons why there were failures point right to LA. and yet so many are willing to say the whole response was a wholesale failure. If I hear one more time how unprepared we are for a terrorist attack I may spit. While there are cracks in the system to be sure, I get sick of the wholesale dissing of the Bush Administration who in my estimation is the only one who did things right. I think it is pretty apparent that other states would be be better prepared to react in their first responder roles than LA.

In the present circumstance, every person activated to deal with Katrina knows exactly when they were called up. The Navy and Coast Guard were on the way before the hurricane crossed Florida. National Guard from many states were tasked, or at least given a "get ready to go" Then the troops under the command of Gen Honore know when they started on their way to LA. This adds up to many thousands of troops and first responders, who all have family and friends that they will be speaking to.

There is too much known in the way of timeline for the Dems to stonewall and pretend that it's Bush's fault.

W does the right thing and lets people see that it was the right thing as situations become clear.

Hurricane Katrina: Why is the Red Cross not in New Orleans?
• Acess to New Orleans is controlled by the National Guard and local authorities and while we are in constant contact with them, we simply cannot enter New Orleans against their orders.
• The state Homeland Security Department had requested--and continues to request--that the American Red Cross not come back into New Orleans following the hurricane. Our presence would keep people from evacuating and encourage others to come into the city.

• MG: Well, the Red Cross, Hugh, had pre-positioned a literal vanguard of trucks with water, food, blankets and hygiene items. They're not really big into medical response items, but those are the three biggies that we saw people at the New Orleans Superdome, and the convention center, needing most accutely. And all of us in America, I think, reasonably asked ourselves, geez. You know, I watch hurricanes all the time. And I see correspondents standing among rubble and refugees and evacuaees. But I always either see that Red Cross or Salvation Army truck nearby. Why don't I see that?
• HH: And the answer is?
• MG: The answer is the Louisiana Department of Homeland Security, that is the state agency responsible for that state's homeland security, told the Red Cross explicitly, you cannot come.
• HH: Now Major Garrett, on what day did they block the delivery? Do you know specifically?
• MG: I am told by the Red Cross, immediately after the storm passed.

• HH: Making an encore appearance, and we're very grateful for it, Major Garrett of Fox News Channel. Major, you certainly made waves yesterday. Perhaps the most reported story in America was yours. You followed up on it tonight. What has your investigation into the Red Cross relationship with the Louisiana Department of Homeland Security revealed today?
• MG: A couple of things. First of all, it established on tonight's Special Report, that it wasn't just the Red Cross. It was the Salvation Army. Both agencies, both organizations were ready, prepared, pre-positioned, eager, but were thwarted in their efforts to bring supplies, basic supplies...not everything these people needed, but core supplies to the Superdome, and then eventually, the convention center. Why? Because the New Orleans Department of Homeland Security said look. Our plan is to evacuate these people. Marty Evans, the President and the CEO of the American Red Cross, said on camera...you don't have to believe me. Believe her. You can read her own eyes, saying look. We were told if we came in, we would create an atmosphere that would lead people to stay, and give them the feeling that they should stay. And the state did not want that.
• HH: Now you said the New Orleans Department of Homeland Security. Did you mean the Louisiana Department...
• MG: I'm sorry. Yes. Louisiana. Right. Because it is a state agency that is answerable to the governor, although the governor did not explicitly make this statement, I'm told so far.
