In Nursing Home, a Fight Lost to Rising Waters (Broussard less than truthful on Meet The Press)

St. Bernard Parish officials say that 32 of the home's roughly 60 residents died on Aug. 29, more than a week ago.

Update 9-11-11
**********

From Lies.com

"..And finally, on the question I raised a few days ago about Jefferson Parish President Aaron Broussard’s tearful story about his emergency manager’s mother drowning in a St. Bernard nursing home, I think the evidence shows pretty clearly that Broussard was embellishing the story. Readers helpfully pointed me to the following news accounts:

New York Times: In nursing home, a fight lost to rising waters.

Newsday: Desperately seeking survivors.

MSNBC: This anger comes from watching death.

From the MSNBC item:

The man he was talking about is Thomas Rodrigue, who told “Dateline” that his 92-year-old mother was one of 32 elderly people found dead at the St. Rita’s nursing home.

***********
MSNBC Quote:
"..The man he was talking about is Thomas Rodrigue, who told “Dateline” that his 92-year-old mother was one of 32 elderly people found dead at the St. Rita’s nursing home..."
***********

But the 32 people who died at St. Rita’s nursing home didn’t die on Friday; they died earlier in the week, when the floodwaters first inundated the low-lying facility. Rather than being attributable to the federal authorities’ slow response (which was pretty much the point of Broussard’s version of the story), the death of those senior citizens was more the fault of local authorities (who failed to evacuate them) than of federal officials (who wouldn’t have been there in time to rescue them under the best of circumstances).

So, assuming the MSNBC story is accurate, Broussard’s story was at least significantly embellished. The tear-jerking account of the repeated calls to momma were fictional (or at least were displaced from their actual time of occurrence, which would have to have been before or during the storm, not during the several days afterward when FEMA was MIA). And if that part was fiction, it would mean that Broussard, for all the apparent sincerity in his emotional on-air breakdown, was willing to lie in order to make his story work better as political theater, which in turn makes it harder for me to credit the rest of the slow-FEMA-response anecdotes he described .."

We were all moved by Jefferson Parish president Aaron Broussard’s tearful account

I wasn't really moved by it. He looked like a corn-pone phony crying crocodile tears -- a dime store phony. I feel sorry for the deceased and their families but not for people exploiting them.

I have seen his kind too many times, and in particular, with his accent (aka the "huckster drawl of mock trustworthiness.")

Why do you all have such a high average weekly death toll?

That's DAILY and we got over 1 million in metro area.

Deaths/Mortality

(Data are for U.S. in 2002)

bullet graphicNumber of deaths: 2,443,387

bullet graphicDeath rate: 845.3 deaths per 100,000 population

8453 per million / 365 days = 23+ daily

New Orleans would have had a lot of deaths even if the hurricane had stopped and fizzled out in Havana!!!!

Yep. Just as I said, those people who allowed those nursing home patients should be convicted of criminal negligence or involuntary manslaughter. It was beyond belief!!!

Not only is it possible-I heard Maxine Waters say that's why they didn't leave....pension and welfare checks come at the first of the month. I heard it with my own ears and posted it somewhere on FR.

"I believe that Mr. Broussard and other local officials need to explain to the American public why they did not evacuate these people and why he altered the story and shifted blame to the Federal Government."

Seems it is just easiesr to go with the flow. . .i.e. 'blame Bush'.

No doubt this lie will make it, along witih all the others, into the Demrat recasting of tragedies post Katrina. . .

Indeed!!!
I ust MOVED from the Big City to get away from those thieves who can steal more with a pen than they EVER could with a gun, and they found me out in the countryside, 30 miles from downtown.

The convinced 7 county commissioners to steal MORE of my money and give half of it to them!

Incredible. . .but of course not. But if Freepers can do this. . .

The truth now will appear a 'piling on'. . .and so more easily ignored. . .

Elsie, you need to move down here. We don't have any football stadiums around here, except for the local colleges, and they pay for them with contributions. Our taxes are low. We have lots of middle class folks from the northeast who move down here and buy mansions for what they got for their small homes up north! However, that does drive up our property values. It is a mixed bag. Oh, well.

I'm afraid you're right, Cricket. I just did a Google search on "Aaron Broussard"...there are many links to his MTP performance, and most describe it as "the most moving moment......blah,blah,blah". No one, so far, is calling him on his LIES!

. . .it is so painful and unneccesary and contrary to any political wisdom that the Repubs do not fight the Lib lies. . .

when these Libs shout from their lies from the housetops; we must go louder - and higher.

The operators of St. Rita's Nursing have been arrested and charged with 34 counts of negligent homicide for not evacuating their patients. Gibson on Fox just now mentioned that this was the same nursing home Broussard was talking about. This development may give this story some new legs.

why he altered the story and shifted blame to the Federal Government.

The fact that he was already under indictment for bribery etc. probably had nothing to do with it

I wonder if Broussard will be called to testify at the trial, seeing as how he's placed himself as a material witness in the case, having received all of these phone calls.

Could be interesting...

I have thought a lot about the elderly in nursing homes after this. I would get there myself ahead of time and get my own out before I'd trust someone else to do it. Why you trust others to take care of your own in a crisis is beyond me.
