Va. college student remains missing a week after she disappeared

RICHMOND, Va. -- One week after she walked out of her dorm room to give her roommate privacy with a boyfriend, a 17-year-old college student remains missing--and increasingly anxious authorities have called in the FBI for help.

Virginia Commonwealth University freshman Taylor Behl hasn't been heard from since she hastily departed her room last Monday night with her car keys and a credit card.

Her roommate reported her missing to campus police around 1:30 a.m. Wednesday.

There has been no activity on her credit cards or bank accounts since Monday, police said. Calls to her cell phone ring through, indicating the phone is on and the battery charged seven days after she vanished. Her phone charger has not been found and no calls have been placed from her phone since Monday.

...

Police say Behl spent Labor Day weekend with her family at her northern Virginia home in Vienna. She drove back to campus on Monday, had dinner at a local cafe and returned to her dorm room around 10:20 p.m.

When she arrived, Fuller said, she found her roommate "entertaining" a boyfriend, and told them she was going to "get lost for a little while" to give them some privacy.

She has not been heard from since. ...

With a population of around 200,000, Richmond is traditionally ranked as one of nation's most dangerous cities. Richmond had the country's fourth highest murder rate in 2003 and was ranked the nation's ninth most dangerous city overall in 2004--beating out Miami and Compton, Calif.

I'm a VCU grad. Biology ('80) Chemistry ('82). Had my own apartments at various times on North-side and adjacent to VCU off campus but still in "the Fan." Had my own car, held down a full time job, went to school at night.

Excellent school. Medical College of Virginia is the professional school allied with VCU. A great research institution. One of the best experiences I ever had. I still love the place and go back to visit at least once a year with the kids. Eldest son is considering the Engineering school and daughter looking at pre-Vet.

Crime happens everywhere.

Uh, why aren't they in contact with the cell phone company to find out where the phone is at?

Great question ...

Unfortunately the battery has probably already run out.

I am a VPI grad, and while I was there (1990 - 1995) one of my friends Andi (forgot her last name) disappeared while going on a tubing trip on the New River. They found her bones the next year out in the woods.

Even in the "safe" area of southwest VA you still have to be vigilant.

Richmond Virginia is a cesspool of crime in the downtown area. The Mayor and city council are totally incompetent, and I cannot say much about the local police. VCU is right in the heart of the downtown area and has a constant crime problem there-not from the students-but rather from the local thugs. Until they get really serious about this major problem, they will continue to prey on these kids and steal, rob, and kill and rape them. It is a real damn shame and it is all on the Mayor and Council. College kids are college kids, and most never think they can be a victim of a heinous crime-nor should they have to-but it is happening at VCU more and more and it really sucks big time!!

-- Unfortunately the battery has probably already run out.--

From the story: "Calls to her cell phone ring through, indicating the phone is on and the battery charged seven days after she vanished."

When someone is reported missing and the police begin their investigation, locating their cell phone (if they have one) should be one of the first priorities.

It either indicates where they are, or where the cell phone is, which you can use to determine either where they went or where the person that took the cell phone went.

Does the phone need to be on in order to pinpoint it's position? Just wondering, because that's how the GPS in mine works; may be something similiar even w/out GPS.

Prayers for the missing girl's family...

And you are a man or a woman? I think women have different comfort levels with crime especially rape. I think fathers have no comfort level when it come to their daughters in big cities.

Also, my brother attended VCU about 8 years before, starting in 1978. My parents were comfortable with him attending but not me. Richmond didn't and still doesn't have the best reputation - regardless of how good the schools are.

And yes, crime happens everywhere.

I am a man, a father and my daughter is all psyched about pre-Vet at VCU.

She should be.

From the story you linked:

Behl left her room in the Gladding Residence Center, across West Main Street from Monroe Park, about 10 p.m. Monday, telling roommates she was going skateboarding with three young men.

No telling what that means, exactly -- were they headed to a skate park, or to some parking lot? At any rate, skateboarding late at night translates into exposure to a rougher crowd.

It's happening here, too....

Lise Martens heard the screams around the same time Jennifer Teague would have been making her way home on the darkened streets of Barr-haven, just after saying goodbye to friends at the corner store down the road, just after the lousy late-night shift at Wendy's.

"It woke me up. It sounded like somebody got scared. It was a very high-pitched scream.

"That's what it sounded like for a few seconds.

"It was mostly a loud scream, muffled. It was definitely a woman," said Mrs. Martens, whose house backs onto Jockvale Road, right by Jennifer's usual route home.

Mrs. Martens, the wife of a retired Mountie, figured it was just a couple having a fight, and when she went downstairs and looked outside, she saw nothing, so never called police.

The police have since taken her statement and, so far, it is possibly the only publicly known trace of Jennifer Teague.

Jennifer's best friend thinks she was taken against her will. The police have expanded their plea for the public's help beyond town, and her father is still waiting for a miracle.

Ed Teague woke up yesterday, shaved, then got down on his knees and prayed for his daughter, now missing for five days without a confirmed trace.

Jennifer Teague, 18, had little money in her pocket, hasn't used her bank card, and her mobile phone has been dead since Thursday, the day she went missing just minutes from her Barrhaven home. Missing for no other reason than walking home on the other side of midnight in a once-safe suburb after pulling down the late-night shift at Wendy's.

We've lost four girls without a trace since the middle of August, between Ottawa, and Toronto.

VCU is a fine school BUT it's surrounded by a bad area. I dearly love Richmond but there are some parts of it that you really shouldn't walk around in especially if you are female.

I am only speaking on my own experience. My father was the kind of dad that would not let me go on school field trips unless my mother chaperoned.
